shorrick mk2 Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 Fellow Mooniacs & Ovation drivers, How is the baffling seal set up behind the engine on your Ovations? I am specifically thinking of the center section which is not straight but has a "zig-zag" sort of bend sort of between the magnetoes. I am puzzled as to how best attach the baffling seal so that it remains in contact with the cowl when it is bent forward. Would anyone care to share a photo of their setup? Quote
carusoam Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 Somebody recently from the U.S. East coast was selling their Acclaim and included nice engine pictures. http://mooneyspace.com/topic/14645-2008-mooney-acclaim-type-s-for-sale/?hl=%2Bacclaim+%2Bsale How is that? Best regards, -a- Quote
shorrick mk2 Posted August 26, 2015 Author Report Posted August 26, 2015 Can't really tell from that photo unfortunately... though unlike the Ovation the back baffling seems to run in a straght line. Quote
Cruiser Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 I don't have pictures but your description is very accurate. From my memory the two sides are straight and meet at the "zig-zag" point. I believe the pilot side is forward of the co pilot side and they just overlap (lengthwise at the zig zag). i.e. the ends are not connected in the center. The flexible material is attached to the front of the metal baffle and bends forward, air pressure pushes it up and seals against the inside of the upper cowl. My baffle material is not one continuous piece but has slits cut into it about every six inches. This method "may" eliminate wrinkles Quote
gsengle Posted August 26, 2015 Report Posted August 26, 2015 They are indeed baffling. Sorry, couldn't resist. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote

Here is a picture of a Mooney Eagle baffling.. This is the old one and was replaced with new baffling last year. Quote

shorrick mk2 Posted August 27, 2015 Author Report Posted August 27, 2015 Thank you for that last photo. That's exactly it (and how I set it up as well). My problem is that the "zig-zag" induces a massive wrinkle (one can see it glancing through the oil filler door) when the cowl presses down on it - so all the efforts of say RTV'ing the small holes shut and such are negated by having a big one smack in line with the airflow.... So i'm wondering how to get rid of it. Quote
DonMuncy Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 If your hangar elf tries to use one continuous baffle strip across that zig zag, it will buckle and cause a leak. However, if he uses two pieces and create kind of an overlap on the zig and cut a slit on the zag, you can (virtually) eliminate any (bad) leaks. It is easier to do than to describe. Quote
