laytonl Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 My wife and I just completed a 3,200 nm (round trip) flight from Lenoir NC to Yellowstone National Park. The route was Terre Haute IN, Cedar Rapids IA, Sioux City IA, Rapid City SD, Sheridan WY, to Bozeman MT. MRN-HUF-CID-SUX-RAP-SHR-BZN. Return trip was Bozeman, Rapid City, Grand Island NE, Kansas City, Cape Girardiau MO, Carrolton Ga (second home) and then on to Lenoir NC. BZN-RAP-GRI-MKC-CGI-CTJ-MRN. My wife wants the flights legs to be about 2.5 hours max and no more than 5-6 hours flying per day, so this is the reason for the number of stops. The Rapid City to Bozeman legs were flown at 11,000 with oxygen. Only two instrument approaches required, both to 300'. It was continuous moderate turbulence leaving Bozeman all the way to Rapid City, otherwise the entire trip was in smooth air. Overall, it was a very easy and un-eventful trip. Great trip! Weather was great and Yellowstone is beautiful! Lee 6 Quote
Hank Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 I love Yellowstone! The drive down from Boxeman is great. When I flew my wife there, we went past Billings and flew the valley south to Cody. Made one stop after Rapid City, in Yabkton, SD for fuel and lunch. Refueled in Gillette, WY on the way home to WV, ~2700 nm round trip. Rapid City was nice, too. Seems we went westbound at 8500 and came home mostly at 9500. Don't have pictures on the iPad, I'll add them tomorrow. My C was a little more full than your J! :-) Quote
carusoam Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 Lee, Sounds like a great set of flights. Allow me a question... The pulse-ox, (I have the same one) do you notice a difference which way the finger goes in? I see internally, a light source and a sensor on the opposite side. For some unknown reason I have been putting the fingernail religiously on the other side. Trying it these evening, I get the same details both directions. Your thoughts,? -a- Quote
chrisk Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 My wife understands that a stop will cost at least an hour and she would prefer to get to the destination faster. This is especially true when it is 100 degrees outside. Anyway, she was fine with a 6 hour flight over labor day weekend. Quote
Piloto Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 Lee, I agree with your wife. I wouldn't be able to stand an hour been kept inside that big leopard skin bag. José 3 Quote

moodychief Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 Lee, Did your wife have any comments about the moderate turbulence? Quote
Mooneymite Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 >>>>Rapid City was nice, too.<<<<< Thanks for the report, Hank. You have to be suspicious of a city whose ICAO identifier is KRAP! Actually, I've been there myself and would generally agree. Just don't go there when Sturgis' motorcycle week is going on unless you really like motorcycle sounds (all night)! Quote
Hank Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 My wife commented, pointing to the GPS, "look, it SUX to go to KRAP." A fun trip. The FBO saved us almost 50% on a hotel that was definitely not krappy--even had indoor pool. That was my strongest crosswind landing at the time, gusting above 20 knots 40 degrees from the left. laytonl Posted September 12, 2014 Author Report Posted September 12, 2014 Lee, Did your wife have any comments about the moderate turbulence? Wife didn't say too much about the turbulence other than "it sure is bumpy". She's a pretty good traveler as long as We stop frequently. Lee Quote
