DonMuncy Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 I have used my IPad with a GNS 5870 MFI Bluetooth GPS for about a year. I have never been really happy with the 5870's on/off switch which involves sliding a finger down the front on the unit. It took multiple tries to turn it off and on, and today it has decided to stay on; apparently permanently. I have swiped it, fast, slow, hard, soft, etc. a few hundred times. It looks like I am going to have to get something else. It needs to be Bluetooth. I don't want to have it hanging off the IPad. What does everyone recommend.
kerry Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 I have a dual 150 I used with my ipad. Never had any issues with it. I don't use it anymore. I now use a nexus 7 which has an internal gps. I could sell it to you. PM if interested.
philipneeper Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 I use the bad elf, hands down awesome, however if you can spend the few extra $$ I would get the sporty ads-b.
Danb Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 Same as Phil, I have a Bad elf and now the Stratus..tough combo to beat
carusoam Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 Using sky radar... The accuracy of the WAAS GPS is interesting when using cloud ahoy... -a-
orionflt Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 I have the 150 also and love it, but i want to upgrade, I'm looking at the GDL-39 3d only because of the apps not supporting the newer dual

Mine did the exact same thing, but waited about 3 years to do it. I ordered a Dual XGPS150A. I chose it because it works with my Android tablet also. Ordered it through Amazon and it should arrive tomorrow. Since I have a Stratus with my ForeFlight, I contemplated not bothering, but there are other location-based apps and Stratus only works with ForeFlight.

And far more apps support the Dual ADS-B receiver than the GDL-39. Stratus supported only by ForeFlight GDL39 supported only by Garmin Dual supported by FlyQ, WingX, Avilution, Naviator, plus a few apps that are little used or going away and more to come including FltPlan and AnywhereMap
DonMuncy Posted March 10, 2014 Author Report Posted March 10, 2014 Midlifeflyer, Today I got the information sheet for the unit and found where it said "in case of malfunction, push reset with a paper clip". I tried it, and, lo and behold, it works, at least for now.
DonMuncy Posted March 10, 2014 Author Report Posted March 10, 2014 If all else fails, read the instructions.

DonMuncy Posted March 10, 2014 Author Report Posted March 10, 2014 I have reset mine 3 times now. It then sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I would not recommend this unit to anyone.
midlifeflyer Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 Fortunately, that unit is no longer being offered. And it's replacement(s) have a more traditional on/off switch. The switch issue really hurt them, at least in the US. None of the aviation apps has them on the recommended list despite being otherwise a very reliable unit.
