KSMooniac Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 This is more of a feeler right now, but if you're interested in a crankcase please contact me very soon. This is from my salvage plane and I'm planning to take it to DIVCO when I get my current crankcase inspected for overhaul. I'm debating selling it to them, or getting it inspected and listed for sale, or using it for my overhaul if for some unlikely reason my current case is no good... Quote
orionflt Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 Scott, Keep me in mind, I have been thinking about collecting the pieces parts to build up an IO-360. It is not something i need at the moment, but if i can collect the parts cheap enough I will eventually build one up. Brian Quote
Alan Fox Posted January 30, 2014 Report Posted January 30, 2014 Sell it to Divco , fast nickels , beat the hell out of slow dimes , also there is no liability or responsibility aspect when you sell to a repair station... Quote
KSMooniac Posted January 30, 2014 Author Report Posted January 30, 2014 Sell it to Divco , fast nickels , beat the hell out of slow dimes , also there is no liability or responsibility aspect when you sell to a repair station... That might be what ultimately happens...hitting the road to go there today in fact to drop off everything else. I've got one serious inquiry though from an outfit that runs two P68 twins with these engines. We're supposed to talk a bit more this morning. I figured it was worth a try to get a few of those dimes quickly. It is also a hedge in case my engine case turns out bad for any reason... Quote
jetdriven Posted January 30, 2014 Report Posted January 30, 2014 Before you unload it consider what these cases go for. I have heard 6-7K is the going rate for a case. Quote
N601RX Posted January 30, 2014 Report Posted January 30, 2014 You might want to keep the one with the higher deck heights, all things else being equals. There is a limited number of times they can be cut Quote
Alan Fox Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 You will never get 6 to 7 K for a case , you can buy new for that , The last case I sold was for 1400 dollars from a E model that was overhauled , but no paperwork , as far as your case goes Diveco can make a case from a roll of aluminum foil , they are that good , people wont buy a case from a scrapper , dont ask me why but they wont , unless you sell it for 100 or 200 dollars , people in aviation are just cheap.....I sold a 300 SMOH engine o360 from a C model , and was lucky to get 10 K for it , watch ebay , watch the engines listed for 16 K that have been listed for 2 + years , and then tell me what they are worth..... I think Divco will give between 800 to 1200 for that case , and it is found money , I would try to trade it for the work on your case , you might come out ahead..... Quote

There is a limited number of times they can be cut I know when there is not enough "meat" on the case halves , they just weld them up and remachine them , not sure if this is limited... Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Last time I had a cracked case was about 15 years ago. It was unrepairable. I removed the engine and tore it down to the case with crank and cam. I gave it to the engine shop. they found a serviceable case and reassembled the engine for $4000. That included new rings and pistons. I think he paid $1200 for the case. Quote
KSMooniac Posted February 5, 2014 Author Report Posted February 5, 2014 Both are at Divco now and I hope to hear from them later in the week about the condition of both. Their operation is very, very impressive! They said there is demand for the -A3B6D cases, so we'll see what develops. My salvage case has ~4500 TT and two overhauls on it, the last of which was 220 hours ago and the case was reworked by Divco. My case is first-run with ~2600 TT and hopefully it will check out just fine. At first glance, their guy thought he might see a couple small cracks in the usual places. It is amazing what they can repair, but having said that, there were a metric sh!tload of scrap cases in their shop. I'm not sure how bad it has to get before it isn't repairable, but I saw some cases that had bearing journals completely welded-up, waiting to get re-machined. Not to mention the usual cracks here and there... I do have serious interest from one outfit that runs some P68 twins and it always in need of these cases. I doubt a used case is worth $5000 but I bet these are worth far more than $1000 too. We'll see! Quote
N601RX Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 I was very impressed with their setup also. They took the time to give me a quick tour when I dropped my stuff off a couple of years ago. I was very relieved to get their call a few weeks later saying everything checked out. Rick Romans and Aircraft Specialties are right next door and are top notch also. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 I have had 2 cases fixed by Divco in the last 30 years. Neither of them ever had any issues of any kind after the repair. The one they couldn't fix had spider cracks everywhere around the alternator mount. it is a wonder it didn't fall out. Quote
Alan Fox Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 Total time does not follow the crankcase , It follows the datatag , which is on the oil pan on Lycoming 4 cylinders , ergo if a 2600 hour case gets installed on a 4500 hour data tag , it becomes a 4500 hour engine..... Quote
jetdriven Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 It doesn't even follow the physical data tag. Just the engine records. The serial number, really. And even those get destroyed when it goes through the factory. Our factory engine had 2300 hours time in service and the only thing on it not verified to be new was the rods, accessory gears, and crank. Maybe some other stuff. And it was delivered we a new data tag. Quote
