triple8s Posted November 28, 2013 Report Posted November 28, 2013 I have been trying to decide, I have a mini pad and have been told the XM has better resolution than ADS-B. Maybe I'll keep my XM not sure yet but, I am not sure what would be the best route. I currently have a 496 w/XM and I like it but the screen is too small, and, if ADS-B is free.....why not, but if the resolution isn't as good.....how much a difference is there? Is GDL 39 all I would need? Quote
Hector Posted November 28, 2013 Report Posted November 28, 2013 I have a panel mounted 496 w/XM as well and I like it, but rumor has it that Santa may bring me a Stratus2 to use with the iPad mini. If so, I will be canceling my XM subscription better resolution or not. You may want to do a search as I have seen folks here post pictures of both, and yes XM did look better but is it $40-60 a month better? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD Quote
scottfromiowa Posted November 28, 2013 Report Posted November 28, 2013 Cancelled XM months ago. No regrets. Weather plays great on my IPad and 696 via Garmin GDL39. The ADSB weather will be paid for in less than a year from now. Agree that weather on 696 is not as good as pad, but the pad has a lot of other great strengths and Garmin Pilot keeps getting better all the time. Ditch the XM. Send the message that the price is double what it should be...I still have my XM puck...for the RIGHT price. 1 Quote
wiguy Posted November 28, 2013 Report Posted November 28, 2013 I'm still using my 696 with the base XM plan, not ready to switch yet. The XM has been a great asset a handful of times, so I don't mind the $37 a month. I usually 'suspend' my account for the months I don't go very far. If & when I really need it I can get it reactivated in about 15 minutes. Quote
laytonl Posted November 29, 2013 Report Posted November 29, 2013 I cancelled XM. I've been using ADS-B weather for over a year and it has been fine. Lee Quote
midlifeflyer Posted November 29, 2013 Report Posted November 29, 2013 I've seen both and am not sure why anyone makes a big deal about the resolution difference unless they plan to make the potentially fatal error of using 8-20 minute old displays for bad weather tactical penetration instead of strategic avoidance. Bartman Posted November 30, 2013 Report Posted November 30, 2013 I don't care about the resolution. I just wish foreflight would provide a radar loop capability with the stratus-2. A 15 minute old static image is good, but radar loop of the past 15-30 minutes would be great 1 Quote
