DonMuncy Posted September 13, 2013 Report Posted September 13, 2013 I'm contemplating a new windshield for my K model. I'm seeing prices all the way from $250 to $800. Are there any differences between the various manufacturers. Anyone with any experience, good or bad from a particular manufacturer.
BigTex Posted September 13, 2013 Report Posted September 13, 2013 I'm having Don Maxwell install a new windshield as we speak. Talking to Don, he said that all of the windshields come from LP Aero Plastics. Might give them a call.
jetdriven Posted September 13, 2013 Report Posted September 13, 2013 FWIW we went with the Great Lakes Aero 1/4" in UV gray tint. 744$ shipped. We havent installed it yet, though. I hear there is some sanding or grinding on the edge to get it to fit into the channel under the skin. The best ideas are stolen from someone else who has done it I copied Bnicolette, who did the same thing. The gray may look a off with the green side windows but I didnt find it objectionable
DonMuncy Posted September 13, 2013 Author Report Posted September 13, 2013 Thanks Byron. I appreciate all pireps re color, thickness, etc.
N601RX Posted September 13, 2013 Report Posted September 13, 2013 I went with 1/4 solar grey all the way around. It was a little worried about it being too dark, but it wasn't. Great Lakes also has a PMA Copilot side window with a storm window built in.
jetdriven Posted September 13, 2013 Report Posted September 13, 2013 Mike didn't u mill your windshield to fit flush with the skin?
N601RX Posted September 14, 2013 Report Posted September 14, 2013 No, That was someone up north who did that. I can't remember who, possibilty one of our Canadain memebers? I would be afraid of causing stress cracks in the corner of the cut over time.
jetdriven Posted September 14, 2013 Report Posted September 14, 2013 I bought a 1/16" radius endmill bit for a rotozip or a router to flush fit the windshield. I havent fit it yet.
Ned Gravel Posted September 15, 2013 Report Posted September 15, 2013 No, That was someone up north who did that. I can't remember who, possibilty one of our Canadain memebers? I would be afraid of causing stress cracks in the corner of the cut over time. That was Clarence, owner of Tri-City Aero, an MSC in Kitchener, Ontario. He sold his E model for a Comanche 400.
