  1. Hi Bennett, your J has better cooling than my E, particularly with the LoPresti. What FF do you use @ 75%? 11.5? 75+ ROP?
  2. I cruise with mine (Scimitar/IO360-A1A) at either 2550 or 2350 because of the RPM restriction, even when I'm pulling <24". The engine/prop seems to like 2550 better though it is smooth at either speed. I like to run full throttle and RAM air open so even at 9000' yesterday I was running @ 70% power (22" MAP) until I pulled prop back to 2350. At 2350 I was indicating ~65% power and felt comfortable pulling mixture to ~ 9 gph. 5 kts slower but 20%+ less FF. (FWIW, rear cylinders CHT were ~335 and front were ~370.)
  3. Insurance cost are about in line with my experience for a 3000 hour pilot and $35,000 hull. Mooneys seem to enjoy lower rates than other complex brands. (I paid $885 when I returned to flying after more than 20 years away. 3000 hours, $60,000 hull at the time.)
  4. I've been taking the plane down at the end of the annual month to get a sign off in the next month.
  5. I recommend removing the cable and carefully measuring and filling out the form. As noted on their WebSite, call Tim Paine and discuss details and pricing for "custom cables". http://www.mcfarlaneaviation.com/Reference/default.aspx?ID=6554170&page=Content&Article=87 I set my old cable on the bench and could have reinstalled it if necessary but the new cable was built and shipped the next day and arrived before I needed to go anywhere. FWIW, the new MacFarlane cable holds RPM much more steady than the old ACS. This is to be done or overseen by your A&P.
  6. So, Bob Kromer saw my installation on the flight line at Panama City Beach and said it made no difference. He said mine looked fine. End of discussion! Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  7. I see a lot of middle-aged people there. Guess I would fit right in. I resemble that remark! Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  8. I just replaced my prop cable and went with MacFarlane rather than ACS after studying the quality differences. McFarland was really great to work with you can either send them the old cable and they'll match it or you can use their online form and fill in the specs on lengths etc and they will get it to you in a matter of days. On another thread an explanation for what you'll need to do for an owner produced part that your A&P can use. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  9. I have the original caps from 18 years ago, water will sit on top of the cap so I understand why they would be concern. I always clear off any standing water before opening the cap. I have never found water in the fuel sample. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  10. The weather turned out great. Few clouds in Georgia but real thin. I already had a chance to fly with Mike Elliott. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  11. Delta Air Lines serves KECP through ATL.
  12. Will do. My weather seems to be working out. Hope to lift off around sunrise.
  13. I need to have our area weather map change. I'm not interested in taking off if there's nothing but low ceilings below for 200 miles.
  14. I mounted mine in the leading edge of the right wing, "symmetric" with the pitot tube on the other wing. I mounted the slim display in the panel near the Aspen and the BU ASI.
  15. We're flight planed to leave NC at sunrise. Present FA looks like rainy skies until be get to GA. Happy, happy, happy!
  16. You're guessing that ain't no stinking electric gear? (8A7 in Mocksville NC is the home of Twin Lakes Avionics. An E model uses about 1/3 of the 2900' runway.)
  17. Don't burst an artery '64E, Marauder suffers JBar envy. His F model was born way too late to be a truly vintage Mooney, but he has a nice little airplane. Bless his heart.
  18. Aw, just get in and take her home. Maybe get a friend to take a video for posterity.
  19. Sounds like you lost airspeed due to the shifting winds. If you're not being blown off the runway I agree with Marauder that getting speed up while on the ground will give you a greater margin if the wind shifts on you.
  20. Ditto, they turned around my 930 (primary) in 2 days plus transit time. While checking the unit itself and one of the transducers they updated the firmware.
  21. Mike, my oil cooler was moved to approximately the 201 config. Note the 2 landing/taxi lights in the first pic. http://mooneyspace.com/gallery/image/33685-replace-engine-baffle-seals/
  22. David, for my '66 M20E: RAM air is still worth about +1" MAP even with a Challenger Air Filter Kit. http://mooneyspace.com/gallery/image/33732-2013-01-28-n943rw-close-up/
  23. name="piperpainter"]you can just get ride of the step....it'll save you a few pounds too! I could get along without the step. But Nancy and probably other passengers would not be able to get along without it. Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
  24. A linear actuator might be worth considering. I'm thinking a hydraulic cylinder with a hand pump operating as my flaps do. Or a mechanical system using a crank (or Johnson bar!) and cable. I wonder if a cable could be connected to gear mechanism. I'm thinking the vacuum pump might be the most elegant. Al Mooney was a clever devil.
  25. My E now has only 2 vacuum dependent devices, the AI which is BU to an Aspen, and the retracting step. If the AI became electric is there a cost effective way to modify the step retract mechanism to get rid of the vacuum pump?
