  1. Just sent you a PM. Thanks!
  2. I've always heard it as ... "There's no replacement for displacement..." Although I think the turbo charged guys might disagree. :-)
  3. Awesome! Installing the update now.
  4. Were you able to find someone? I have a buddy that drives LearJets for charter and has a couple hundred hours in J models and probably 25 hours in my C model. He might be available depending on timing and arrangements.
  5. I typically only need 2-3 pumps when the temps are at or above 15 C. Anything colder than that and I have to increase the number of pumps. Temps of -2 to -5 C requires 10-12 pumps in my plane.
  6. I'll chime in that on my O-360 (67 C model) if the temps are near or below freezing I have to pump the throttle ~ 10 times, as indicated by carusoam, for a healthy and easy start.
  7. Hadn't thought about this, but definitely an added benefit.
  8. That is pretty much my thought. I've heard that they are much more effective when used in conjunction with an external antenna... Not sure what it would take to install an interface for that.
  9. First attempt at a poll... Just curious how many folks out there carry a backup portable radio. I don't currently own one but have considered picking one up to listen to the local CTAF as well as for a backup should I lose comms while flying, especially in IMC.
  10. Definitely a dangerous attitude. I'm working on my instrument rating but would not even consider entering actual without my instructor present. If we were flying in actual and my instructor were to become some how incapacitated, I believe that with the grace of God and a strong helping hand from ATC that I would be able to either shoot an approach into a nice sized airport or navigate to VFR conditions. Regardless of that perceived ability, it would require the immediate declaration of an emergency on my part. (Climb, Confess, Communicate, Comply....) While working on my private certificate my instructor (CFII) and I took off on a short cross country with a scattered sky and VFR conditions at our destination. Did a touch-and-go at the destination and headed home. By the time we got back to our home airport area (less than 60 minutes) the scattered sky had turned to an overcast layer at about 1200 AGL, with tops at about 4000. We called for a pop-up clearance and shot the ILS back into our home airport. Due to the thickness of the layer and the specific approach we were flying, we were in the soup for about 20 minutes before breaking out on final. That experience gave me a lot of well deserved respect for clouds and I think it would be good for every new student to have some time in actual with an experienced CFII prior to being turned loose with a fresh certificate in their pocket.
  11. Business Intelligence Consultant - Business owner...
  12. Thanks guys. I'm a pretty young / healthy guy, but just wanted to make sure I wouldn't need new medical after the procedure. Fortunately, the pain is very minimal and I'll be off the meds in ~48 hours, but the point is very well taken.
  13. Had my knee scoped this morning to repair some torn cartilage under the knee cap. The good news: surgery went extremely well and a full recovery is expected. The bad news: it will likely be 2 weeks before I can fly (with an instructor as a safety pilot) and 6 weeks before I can solo again. I spoke to my AME and he said that as long as the surgeon had released me to fly, and I was off any prohibited medications, that I am cleared to fly... All of this assumes I feel comfortable doing so. My goal is to use the down time to finish studying for my instrument written... Hopefully you guys can keep me entertained. If anybody has been waiting to post some awesome in flight videos, please do so now. :-)
  14. Beautiful machine...
  15. Long before I started working on my PPL, I was fascinated by the Velocity kit planes. The lack of a true VMC issue is a neat idea for a twin, but if the canard stalls before the main wing ( as they claim on all of their models ) it would prove tough to flare while landing. Unless ground effect is more pronounced on the canard, it seems you'd have to have a pretty flat landing attitude... Fortunately, with the engine(s) in the back, you wouldn't have as much of an issue with prop strikes from porpoising, but it seems like it might try to wheelbarrow on you.
  16. I've only started the plane once with the new starter, but it is significantly quieter and faster than the previous starter.
  17. Sky-tech has been installed and I'm taking it out for some instrument training tomorrow. I'll let you know how it performs.
  18. Starter was bad. I mentioned the possibility of a Sky-Tech via text message and he went ahead and ordered it before I could discuss the possibility of a B&C. From what I've read about the latest Sky-Tech starters, I should be happy with it. I'll follow back up with a pirep on the starting performance in comparison to my old OEM starter.
  19. Thanks, I'll mention that to my mechanic. I'm sure he'll test the battery, but you cant be too careful. I'd hate to pay for a starter when it was just a battery.
  20. Congrats on the great plane and welcome to Mooneyspace!
  21. Thanks for the feedback, the A&P has been called and I suspect that I'll hear something sooner rather than later. It sounds like if the starter DOES need to be replaced, that you wouldn't be against the use of a sky-tech...
  22. Starter drug just a little on startup this morning, but the engine roared to life after 2 blades. Just took a quick flight for some VOR work and the shot the ILS back in, under VFR conditions... Taxi back to the hangar was uneventful, but when I shut the engine down, the prop stopped rather abruptly. I was fairly certain that I knew what was wrong before I ever unbuckled my seatbelt. Sure enough, the starter was still engaged on the flywheel. Fortunately, it didn't look like any damage was done to the teeth on the flywheel, but I'm fairly sure that I need a new starter. I've read the name "sky-tech" more than a few times on this board, and was looking at using them for the replacement. Any good pireps out there? Pros / Cons?
  23. I was hoping that (for some crazy reason) you wanted to trade your MSE for a gently used '67 C Model so you could fully experience the famous manual gear system. If that was the case I was going to make the sacrifice to help you out...
  24. What's the useful load on it?
  25. Lets see the pictures. What's the reason for letting it go?
