  1. The KI209 doesn't have an internal GS receiver and you have to install an external GS receiver when you want to use the a KI209 with a KX170. The GS receivers are fairly cheap but, the labor for wiring will be significantly more. KI 214 should be available an ebay.
  2. I couldn’t justify spending 20% to 25% of the airplanes value on the installation of a WAAS unit, and installed a couple of years ago a GX60. You should be able to find one of the older non WAAS IFR units for less than $1000. The units to consider are KLN89B, GX50/60, GNS155XL. The prices should range from $600 to $2500, with the 89B being the lowest and the 155 the highest. Keep in mind displays for KLN 89B and GX50 are not available anymore and the units becomes a small boat anchors if the display goes out. I was willing to take that risk because there are many replacement units available. The IFR installation requires an indicator, annunciator lights and the connection to an altitude encoder. The GX50 needs an encoder with serial output, the 89b works with the standard output, don’t know about the Garmin. Most installations share the indicator with VOR/GS, hence the annunciator- switch combination. The easiest way to install a complete system would be to use one of the small Midcontinent CDI’s with built-in annunciator lights, however you lose the advantage of vertical guidance, one of the features I like the most in our airplane. Considering that an ADS-B compliant solution can be up to 10 times the installation of a simple IFR GPS I decide to wait. I am very hopeful that as the deadlines gets closer and the small airplane revitalization act becomes reality lower cost options will be available for ADS-B compliance.
  3. Does Garmin’s Pilot app have an EFIS options or is the steam gauge presentation the best they can do?
  4. http://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/rulemaking/committees/documents/media/Part.23.Reorganization.ARC.FINAL.Report.pdf My understanding is that the new Part 23 regulations will allow to change our aircrafts to "private use" and the regulations will be very similar to experimental aircraft or LSAs. Subsequently we should be able to install non TSO equipment.
  5. I have a King KLN89B approach certified GPS for sale. No tray or antenna, $700. Radio is in good condition and would be a perfect replacement if your unit has display issues.
  6. I am very sorry to hear about your bird. This hits close to home, as I go to L08 for fuel as well. The FBO in Palm Springs gives tenants a break on the $8 avgas price, but the difference compared to L08 is still significant. If I you need a ride from TNP to L08 in the future, let me know and I would be more than happy to help.
  7. The drain aft of the wings is for the static system and the drain in the leading edge is for the Pitot line. This seems to be the standard factory set-up.
  8. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/pages/in/instrumentlighting/glowstrips.php We installed the glow strips under the glareshield. This is a fairly somple installed looks sharp and iluminates the entire panel.
  9. Thank you Kevin, this was exactly the information I was looking for. We were able to clean and lubricate the valve in place and replaced all fittings. The static drain valve had the same issue. We also had to replace multiple fitting whit split plastic collars in the system. All this took a few hours, but at the end the system everything worked fine and the system was IFR certified.
  10. I have to service the pitot system drain valve located in the front of the left wing close to the fuselage. I was wondering how to best access the valve. Thank you, Frank
  11. The BK Mywingman app has European coverage and is IFR and VFR. You can sign up for a free trail.
  12. I replaced the lenses on my KX165 this morning with the lenses from the ebay vendor, and I am happy with the result.
  13. I saw a 1977 with similar specs for less that 50K in PSP; the plane was just listed on Ebay. I would love to buy it if I could sell our C. The current prices are depressing...
  14. We bought a cover from Mac's Airplane covers 2 yrars ago and are very happy with fit and quality. In the past we had used Bruce and we didn't feel that fit and quality matched the price.
  15. Since EZSAVE doesn't work on my new W8 laptop I am looking for a cost efective solution to download data from the EDM700. I don't want to buy the $200 download box and was wondering if anybody is still using the Palm Pilot software for the EDM700. It is "old school" and the software is not available for download anymore, but if it works why not continue using it. Let me know if you have a copy of the software. Thank you, Frank
  16. Don't know about the EI, but I had the same issue with the EDM 700. Tech support told me that the software doesn't work with W8.
  17. First I checked the servos with a hand vacuum pump (check the archives for great how to do write-ups) and found one ripped servo, removed it and got it repaired. Then I removed the TC100 and the servo control valve and send them to Brittain. Turn around 1.5 weeks and total cost less than $700. Per Brittain, the servo and plumming have to be so airtight that you can go to lunch and when you come back it still holds the vacuum.
  18. I had recently our system overhauled by Brittain. Super people to work with and maybe one of the best values in the aviation industry. When discussing the repairs with staff I was told that the issues is that no servo control valves are available. Therefore it seems critical to buy only a complete system. I saw one for sale on EBAY for $1500. Considering that one sold recently for $1200 that seemed high to me, but if the alternatives are 10 times that much it doesn't sound that bad anymore. In the meantime we have our system coupled to a GX60 and love it.
  19. I heart back from JPI: EZSAVE is NOT compatible with Windows 8, sorry.
  20. The EDM 700 has a serial port and I use a usb to serial converter. The computer connects to the EDM and shows the transfer of data, but right at the end an error code is displayed and no data is saved.
  21. I had never any problems with my old Windows 7 laptop, but when I tried to download data from the EDM700 today using my new Windows 8 laptop it didn't work. Has anybody used Windows 8 and Ezsave sucessfully. Are there any tricks or setting one has to use? I hate Windoes 8... Frank
  22. I just got my PC system overhauled by Brittain. (Servo repair was $160; TC and servo control $600). The cost is extremely reasonably (by aviation standards) and the people are very nice and helpful. If you add the Accutrack II you have a good working autopilot. We have the Accutrack II coupled to a GX60 and the system tracks within 0.1 miles even in high cross wind condition. The install is very simple to install and I saw one for sale on ebay this weekend.
  23. The system is in my opinion a huge safety factor and I can’t imagine why one would remove the PC system instead of getting it fixed. I just got my PC system overhauled by Brittain. In the meantime if you still want to get rid of the system I am interested in all your parts.
  24. Looking at a friends highly modified 201 last weekend I noted a fairing covering the tube connecting the step to the fuselage. Is this standard on all 201s or a mod? Does anybody make a fairing for the much longer Ranger step? In 10 years of Long EZ ownership prior to the M20C, a gear leg fairing was the most effective speed mod I did and I imagine a proper designed fairing around the step could add some performance. At a minimum it would look faster than the standard tube.
