Newbe Looking for advise on a Mooney
co2bruce replied to flyinfool1011's topic in General Mooney Talk
Insurance for your son, if does not have an instrument rating may be a problem. I also agree I would rather beat up a fixed gear 172, or 152, than a Mooney with (expensive) retractable gear. All that said, I know there are people on this board that did their training in a Mooney. I'm sure they can give you first hand experience. -
We will be keeping an eye on you Oscar !!!

I never thought of the increase in payload. Because I operate on the East Coast takeoff distance and performance is seldom an issue. But when looked at as a complete package the conversion does make sense and seems like a good value. As far as the TBO comment, it just makes sense that an identical engine being asked to produce 15-20% less HP would have a better chance to make it to TBO. Of course your mileage may vary. As far as any studies, I have none to offer.

I can achieve 176 - 180 kts on my standard Eagle (no upgrades) on 14.5 gal/hr at 10,000 - 12,000 ft. I'm not sure I'd pay $20,000 for 10 more kts. Of course my normal mission is 500 - 700 nm. Thats about 12 minutes on a 600 nm trip. The 244 hp Eagle will also have a better chance of making TBO from what I hear. I would love an Ovation paint and interior !!!!!! I'm on cloth seats with a very basic white paint job.

My flight instructor has crashed
co2bruce replied to Mcstealth's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
My thoughts go out to the families. You need to wait and get some facts. I have lost people in airline accidents and know the feeling. We participate in a activity that has risks, and good piloting involves managing those risks. My thoughts will be with you as well as you work through this tradgedy. -
You will be surprised how well you can maintain roll and pitch angle with just the turn coordinator, VSI and altimeter. To maintain heading I use the HSI page on the Aera 560 which also provides lateral and vertical guidance to the runway. If you have a flight simulator try doing an approach without an ADI. You will be surprised how easy is to do it. To avoid over pitching use the trim instead of the elevator. I found the 5Hz update rate of the Aera HSI suitable for even maintaing attitude control. The Aera VSI responds quicker than the pneumatic VSI and the Aera turn coordinator is good enough for roll control. Do not over control and you will surprised how this gadget can save your life even if you loose everything. Remember even if you have attitude indication you still need to bring the airplane down safely to an airport. José

Jet, can I use that checklist (Royalty Free of course!)

I have a portable waterproof Fast Finder with GPS that floats in the water. No sense on having it attached to a sinking or burning plane. I fly over the Bahamas and needed something waterproof that I can carry on the raft. Mine is Velcro attached to the right side of the console for easy access. I also carry a portable waterproof marine VHF radio. 99% of the boats do not monitor 406 MHz but VHF Ch 16. José

At 3000 ft AGL airport on a 90 degree day at gross ....... yes

I have a standard 1999 Eagle with 244 hp (when brand new) and a 3000 ft asl airport at 90 degrees, with a 5 kt headwind, to clear a 50 ft obstacle requires over 3500 ft. It takes 2600 without obstacle clearance, so anything under 3000 ft in the summer is close. Anyone claiming to take off in 1500 and landing on 1200 is not operating an Eagle. Just saying

I have owned 3 Mooneys, and I love the brand, but they do take up a lot of runway compared to some other planes. At higher density altitudes the landing, and take off distance can be longer than the Piper or Cessna. It may have something to do with the shape of our wings. I know we are much more efficient in cruise. Just stiring the pot??

Thanks for the quick responses . I thought they were exceptional, you have confirmed they are the way to go

I have a window leak on the right rear window. To reseal it properly will require me to remove the interior panels to get to it. Since I have a 99 Eagle (cloth interior) I'm thinking this may be a good time to pretty her up. I'm talking to Aero Comfort (Hector) and they seem really nice, and easy to work with. I've seen some of their work and it looks amazing, I'm wondering if anyone has worked with them and is their workmanship as good as it looks and are they worth the extra hassle of shipping the stuff back and forth. Any and all comments are appreciated. If you had a bad experience please e-mail or PM it to me. I do not want to to start one of "those threads". Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

It didn't happen unless their are pictures! -
You can count me in also. This site is worth the investment.

They can be ordered from the factory though a Mooney Service Center. I just got a set 2 months ago.

You can put more than 75 gallons in the S. I rarely fly with a full load and often carry more fuel than 75 gallons (you can fit 90 gasl) . That said, how long can you go before a bathroom break????? 4 - 4.5 hours is my limit but I'm old. I agree if you can afford an Ovation and it has the desired avionics that woudl be my choice. I own an S it works well for my mission
