  1. Where's the best place to get the tires?
  2. Mike I'm sorry I can't respond to the above because I, nor "a friend", have ever experienced it. Sorry I can't help. The only thing I've ever had on the Mooney was a trace/coating of rime ice from climbing up through a known layer where there was clear on top. The ice on the wings pictured above is real scary, to me. It doesn't mention what altitude it was at but I would imagine even at lower altitudes it was becoming difficult to maintain altitude and climbing was probably out of the question. Your question about the tail is more than likely going to bite you when flaps are entered into the equation. If you've ever been accumulating ice and it's still there for landing, really think about whether you really need flaps for landing, or if you do want them, get ready to switch those puppies back in the up position if anything strange is felt.
  3. Hey guys i have a Reiff heating system but i just leave it plugged in all the time which Reiff says is safe to do. Is this something that i shouldn't do? Thx for any input
  4. Yeah the defroster is not very effective against ice. When It's cold out I started run it full bore on the window and run the roof vents to keep it comfortable with the cooler air. I have had a trace on the airplane before and the window gets frosted over really quick. Since then I haven't had anything stick to the airplane to see if turning the defroster on early does any good but I am assuming it will do little if any good. Mike what your asking is literally impossible to answer. I have to assume with the thin wing we have that flying characteristics will degrade rapidly but I haven't been on that ride, nor do I want to be.
  5. Welcome Mike. Super looking airplane inside and out. Here's to many happy hours with her. Blue skies, Brett
  6. The last legal interpretation I could find was from Jan 2009 which Bruce mentions in his write up.
  7. Alright Chris. This one will alleviate your concerns (click the link below): It's okay Chris No one is going to come after you unless you had some poor planning and caused a "ruckus" so just be prepared to be able to explain your thought process and planning in the event that you are called out on it and all will be well. I sure didn't want to come on here and say yeah I do it all the time and it's no big deal. Just look for this, that and the other and you'll be fine. I don't want to read "Another Mooney Down" thread. If the OP really wants to experience icing or lack thereof, then go out with another experienced flyer on a day when the bases are well above the MEA and go fly in the cold clouds. However, I am here to tell you that no two days are the same. There is no alternative other than having a Known Out!!!!! These video's are good: AOPA Icing encounter
  8. Not that this article answers your questions but it is a good precursor to any answers that may follow: http://www.ifr-magazine.com/defining_known_ice_certification_faa_ifr.html Before you even consider flying in cold clouds without icing equipment just make sure you have solid 100% for certain "outs" and understand the weather most conducive to icing.
  9. WTH is a fuddy duddie? I'm happy to be an active member of the NEMP (Northeast Mooney Pilots). Hey an abbreviation you can actually sound out. Unlike NJMP.
  10. Like you Chris I also have a subscription to both but I am going to drop Garmin like a bad habit when renewal comes around. I simply refuse to give them anymore of my support financial or otherwise. I'll be as happy as the day I cancelled my XM weather subscription. Come to think of it I wonder if I can cancel Garmin Pilot now and get a refund???
  11. José I would have him email: team@foreflight.com and ask that they give him a call as I'm sure he won't want to email back and forth with them. Or, find somebody at his local airport that can walk him through it as just about every personal pilot is "savvy" with it these days. If you don't have any luck, PM his number and I will be more than willing to help him out over the phone. B
  12. Thought this deserved to be put here also: Foreflight now has visual and audio alerts for traffic. So if you have ADS-B out in your airplane (portable or permanent) you will now get the alerts through Foreflight. I happen to have a portable ADS-B out solution which works extremely well and now in conjunction with Stratus/Foreflight it is really a useful safety tool in the cockpit.
  13. I didn't know that this was part of Foreflight but we now have audio alerts as well as visual alerts for traffic!! Time to get a splitter so I can have the 396 and the iPad plugged into intercom system. I just asked them about this last month and voila!! I am SO impressed with them. They are making it hard to justify spending multiple 10's of thousands on "installed equipment" especially when updates are coming at us SO fast and they're FREE!!!!
  14. Very cool!! I would like to get some of my airplane someday.
  15. The car or my wife (CJ)? The car came away unsaved (of course that is CJ's point of view) And CJ is used to dealing with situations, as they always seem to happen when I am on the road. So she is good too. Just glad nothing fell on the house!!!
  16. Foreflight is a lot like Fltplan in that even though we all use it all the time it's amazing how often we can find something about it we never knew. There is SO much information on the Fltplan nav logs and it is or at least was simply amazing. Now Foreflight is really taking the reigns on these features. Although I still use Fltplan personally and professionally at the moment I can envision using Foreflight exclusively in the future for all my flight planning needs.
  17. Foreflight does have a list of recent routes between A & B. In the map page you can press routes.
  18. This was the result of the front at my house. Only good news is the insurance is up to date and the shed was about to need a new roof. Of course I was out of town and my wife had to deal with everything this morning.
  19. Very true Ward. I'm not saying it's impossible or even improbable. Most military folks learning to fly aren't in their 50's and I imagine they're very disciplined in a very structured environment flying/training daily. I hope it all works out for him it's just unorthodox "in my mind".
  20. I get to fly in it all day tomorrow. ILG-SAV-PBI
  21. I just think it's a little backwards. We have little in the way of instructors around here to begin with. I would have my reservations working with him in a "training airplane" knowing he went through 4 instructors and had that much time with no solo. Throw into that mix a high performance airplane. Nope............definitely don't want my name in that logbook. He was either lacking proper counsel or he totally ignored it.
  22. So. A friend of mine just sold his Bravo to another local guy. This guy has just under a hundred hours in an airplane and has never solo'd. BUT, nonetheless, he bought the Bravo and is going to start his flight training this weekend. Yikes. Hopefully nothing more than a prop strike in his future???
  23. Mike I'm just putting it on here since there is some interest in it. I got the kit from LASAR part # (LCOWL) $60 Henry Weber's installed the kit and it was 5 hours labor. I had the engine shimmed while it was there with new lord mounts and the spinner sits perfectly up to the cowl (Note that the 5 hours labor is strictly for the install of the kit). The cowl does not move and whenever taking it on and off always fits right back up perfectly to the spinner and stays there. I used to have to pull the cowl down after every flight before the kit. After the kit there is zero shift. I highly recommend it.
  24. I had the kit installed on my airplane and my cowl is completely stationary! It definitely does not ride up anymore.
  25. Interesting José, good experiment. That's terrible news by the way. I suppose that a painted surface would probably react the same? Since you already have the cans of stuff, just as well give it a shot. Thanks for the write up.
