dito all of the above. The 7000 series of aluminum used in our airplanes structual areas has a tendency to corrode if the heat treat on it was not perfect. The worst of this is intergrannular which usually pops up on a spar or something. exposure to an elecrolyte (water) can trigger this. The corrosion in the picture, and the areas they clearly painted over on the alcad aluminum can be taken care of by just stripping the paint, removing as much corrosion as possible and then etching with alodine and repainting with a corrosion resistant paint. But the question remains...............what lurks underneath. My experience has been where there is smoke there is fire. Especially in these older airplanes. I cant tell what is happening in the last picture, clearly there is a couple of non-stock panels, one pop-rivited it looks like, then a cut access panel with what looks like machine screws and tinnerman nuts I would assume. Modification?

Almost all audio panels do these days. It can be annoying though. Sometimes makes you want to forgo the old flight following.

We have a 16" urban mover, which is an electric 16" that fits through the baggage door of our C. We also have an e-mazing innovations 12" electric bike. We can get them in the baggage compartment together.

It operates on an android platform so you can use Wing X with Geo referenced charts from Seattle Avionics. -
Alternate to IPAD for Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)

I like the size, and the external storage. A little limited by a slower processor and decent but not great battery life. Also internal storage is very low. But that having been said as long as it can run your software, and perform the mission that you want, then it is all good. I really want to try a devise of this size, because I could yoke mount it. The price is certianly right. I assume since it has bluetooth you can use an external GPS. May be worth a shot. Thanx for the info. -
That's just awesome. I fully expected him to just bend the prop back out and take off!!

Well in my humble opinion, some accidents lend themselves to speculation more then others. Also when there is a fatality, out of respect you are less likely to try and find fault with what the pilot may have done wrong. My prayers go out to the family of the accident victim. I also find a lot of the information here invaluable, especially to a relatively new Mooney owner such as myself. I can draw on the experience of others on the site, and help keep myself safe. Knowledge is power.

I just started A&P school and I'm realizing there is a lot to it. I have owned two planes and been around flying for a long time, which is an advandage, but I am really learning quite a bit. I guess if you log enough time you could just memorize the answers for the test, but you still have to do a practicle.

Assuming those are O&N, are you doing the two bag add on? I have a '63 with 48 gallon tanks, and am desperate for more fuel, and have been looking at bladders or the Monroy Kit. I appreciate your photos and hope to get your opinions when it is done. Thanx.

Quick trip to Friday Harbor, WA after A&P school with a couple of kids from my class. Note all the stacked up Boeing 787's and 747-800s at the end, just waiting to be delivered.

Safety of emergency landing on a road?
eldeano replied to jetdriven's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I remember from my CFI days we taught people to pick out the poles when looking for power lines. A lot of times in the desert where we had the large transmission lines all over the place you could pick out the pads the towers sat on. The terrain in the Southwest where we were, it was more a matter of which road you were going to pick! The thing with the interstate is that if you flow with traffic you are going about the same speed as they are on the approach, someone will see you and slow down the traffic. Sean Tucker put his plane down on a semi busy freeway in the Southern California area in this manner, when he wasnt sure about how much fuel he had. That does however present a higher risk to people on the ground if you are in a remote area with other options, but not if you are in an urban area. I think every situation is different, but is a good thing to discuss and think about before it happens in hopes of being better prepared if it does. -
Ditching at Night....are you prepared for it?
eldeano replied to fantom's topic in General Mooney Talk
Quote: Mazerbase Despite every preparation, I doubt any of us are really ready to ditch at night. Some are just less so than others. Even on short water crossings (FL coast to Bahama coast about 50 nm) I wear a PFD and make my passengers do the same, get high enough to glide, carry a PLB, and do it during the day. SEL seems to say it all. Maybe I'm just overly cautious. -
Quote: stevesm20b I think Garmin has an excellent product. But it's outrageous what they charge for all the updates. At least with the ipad you have a lot more options and your not paying every month for updates. It's amazing all the stuff that has come out recently for the ipad. Moving maps, charts, weather, synthetic vison. And it seems every month or two someone is coming out with something even better. All without reoccuring monthly fees. Garmin is going to have to lower their update fees if they want my business.

I tend to to the more technical, oh look I'm 20 miles out, guess I should start thinking about getting down now. unless IFR of course.

insurance question--PIC during instrument training
eldeano replied to rbridges's topic in General Mooney Talk
As long as you are the sole minipulator of the controls, you are PIC. FAR 61.51 explains it all. As far as insurance is concerned I would verify with your agent. -
Just saw a photo posted on facebook where you could clearly see the trim tab had seperated. Happy to report at least all of the folks that I work with at Kenmore Air that went down there are OK. They all seem to have similar stories to Sven. I'm sure the event was insured, but I hope the flying community will rally to do whatever they can for the victims and their families.

Quote: Sven Just returned home. The scene was unbelievable and horrific. Debris was flying everywhere. Thankfully the big stuff stopped before it reached us. I was following him the entire time with my camera. We were too shocked to run. My friend was so close he got sprayed with avgas. The scene looked a war zone. I'll give a PIREP later on what the plane did.

We have several friends there as well, most of whom we have heard from. They described the scene as surreal. I was there in 2007 when the three pilots were killed and I remember how somber that was. I can't even imagine what it must be like now! My heart goes out to those people there to enjoy one of aviations last great events, only to end up injured. And to the families of those that were killed. Truely an incredibly tragic event.
