  1. I purchased my 66 M20C with PF installed, previous owner claims performance increased in all areas. I cruise at 148kts true at 24/24 at around the 5000 foot level. I also agree that it increased the fuel flow judging on my fuel burn compared to others. But that's ok because I have huge fuel tanks!!........................................................Oh wait. Where's that thread on Monroy extended fuel tanks?
  2. I had the same experience twice at KPHK and once at TJMZ. It happens when there is no wind or the crosswind is at 90 deg so you can land at either end. At one time at PHK I am ready to take off on rwy 35 when my Monroy ATD-300 alerted me of traffic at 2 o'clock 1nm +200ft. I look up and spotted the traffic on final at the opposite end. At another instance I was ready to taxi into the runway when it alerted me of traffic on base. I was surprised how well the little gadget detected traffic on the ground with a bottom antenna. I probably missed the traffic announcements on the coms when I was listening AWOS. My advice: if having two radios keep one on the unicom freq. all the time and get a Monroy ATD-300. José
  3. Nick, but where is the girl? When flying in florida you need to have companionship with the proper attire. José
  4. Wow! How sad. All of this is so tragic! The first story on the good Doctor seemed to be fairly heartless and amateurish in my opinion, but I am no expert. Very sad regardless. Also the couple in Winslow. I have flown in and out of there a few times, a fun little place. Sorry to here of two people serving their communities dying in such a tragic manor. All though it is of little consolation, hopefully we will be able to learn something from these investigations. My heart goes out to their families, and even there airport communities, as these losses can be especially difficult to deal with.
  5. Quote: Immelman If you replace the down-lock casting, note that it affects the gear preloads (think about it, you'll be extending the j-bar furthter "down" to get it locked). Make sure who ever replaces the casting knows how to deal with adjusting the gear preloads. This could be a job for a competent MSC or an A&P who really knows Mooneys.
  6. I think you need to consider your mission. If there is an airport you want to get into that only has a gps approach, which is usually not the case, then you should consider that. Otherwise, just get the DME. You can use the ipad for unofficial situational awareness, geo-referenced approach plates are now available and still less then half of what a panel GPS data upgrade costs. Also flying approaches with the panel GPS can be complicated if you don't do it all the time, especially the KLNs. In my opinion it is best to stick to what you know, and don't spend money on something you don't need that may force you to fly less.
  7. Last time I came through Memphis, we went from Olive Branch refueled in Fort Smith, nice FBO, Then onto Albuquerque Double Eagle airport, which was nice, nice little restuarant. The next Day we went onto Winslow AZ. Great Mexican food restaurant, a lot of fly in customers, then overflew a big meteor crator around Flagstaff, and on to Sedona AZ. Beautiful little art town nestled in the mountains. From there you can duck South to the palm desert area. We were also vfr in a M20C.
  8. I was going to ask if a small stage and a brass pole in the corner would be inappropriate.
  9. I have the Nulites in my 63C, but they were installed by the previous owner. They work great though.
  10. Pireps and notam-d are there as well, just hidden unless you scroll over to them. ADS-B METARs, TAFs, NOTAMs, PIREPs, and AIRMETs appear right on the moving map page. Don't be surprised when you get to your destination and the weather isn't what you had expected or perhaps a runway was closed. Get the latest AIRMETs and PIREPs for your flight and know the unexpected.
  11. The long wait is over, we have bad weather!! Flew as a pax on one of our Kenmoreair Express flights from bfi to frd. Used wing-x with skyradar box. Worked great, we flew right into the weather as predicted on radar. Pretty nifty. Wing-x is starting to grow on me a little more as I get more familiar with it. The geo-referenced airport diagrams are a nice feature that I wish I had on my last trip across the country. Split screen feature is also handy, although it seems that if you have a vfr sectional on the top and bottom screen you can not have different overlays for each. Sometimes it was a little slower to refresh, especially with terrain, but probably wouldn't be an issue on the ipad 2. Also being able to hit the route button and having airport and other info available without having to leave the map page is nice.
  12. Wouldn't you know I try to review wing-x with skyradar on the only perfect clear no weather day we have seen in the Northwest for like ............ well ever it seems!! The new wing x is a drastic improvement, but still not as user friendly as foreflight(in my opinion). I like foreflights interpreted tafs in local time better, and the info you need is easier to get to such as freqs and fbos etc.. Also the flight rules and ceilings charts. I do however like the wing x split screens and terrain info. Also the airspace feature is great in our area. Sometimes Wing-x seems to give you to much info to sort through, which is great on the ground, but in the air you want just what you need in my opinion. Probably part of this is that I am used to Foreflight, but I challenge the Hilton software people to get in the air and streamline their product. I feel like foreflight has done this. Maybe someday in the distant future we will get bad weather again in the Northwest and I can give a better weather interface review. I really, really, want to drop the xm subscription, and the Garmin Aera updates, as I already pay enough to Garmin for the Panel GPSs' updates.
  13. I have had some problems getting ads-b coverage over the Cascades here in the Northwest. That may have Changed, but I will not know until summer when it is safe to fly over the Cascades again. I am going flying tomorrow and will try wing-x with the skyradar box and see what happens. I'm downloading the databases as I type this. Just doing the 30 day trail for now. I flew to New England this fall/winter and back down through the south and had planned on checking coverage, but our small M20C cockpit was already pushed to the limit, so just used the Aera and the ipad strapped to my leg with the bad elf GPS. I now use the GNS 5870 bluetooth gps as we had problems charging the ipad with the bad elf on those longer days.
  14. I own a skyrader box but haven't been using it, as I prefer foreflight to the skyrader app. I haven't tried the new version of wing-x though, so maybe I will give that a shot. Wasn't impressed with there older offerings. Foreflight with an external GPS is, in my opinion, awesome for long cross country's to unfamiliar airports because of all of the easily accessible information, including info on FBO's and fuel prices, freqs, taxi diagrams, etc. What you don't get is weather and terrain. They are putting together a weather package through wx works, but it will be about $200.00 for the interface, $650.00 for the wxworks box, then you need a xm subscription. You can buy an Aera for that, which is what I use for weather, and just keep it minimally upgraded, as to not break me. Looking forward to checking out the new Wing-X. Thanx for the info
  15. As I understand it that is something you can do by yourself as long as the materials you use are compliant with flame retardant standards. FAR 23.853 You may check with some of your local custom auto interior shops with good reps as I found most of them have done some aircraft work and are familiar with these standards, also they will supply you with documentation, all for much less then aircraft interior shops.
  16. ahhhhh, this used to be such a nice happy forum Back to the original question, in my C I do full flaps 100 downwind,90 base, 80(mph) over the fence pull power, a little float then it settles down beautifully. On short runways like where I used to be based at Harvey field, (2400 by 36) I would level out on final, bring it down to 70 then you have a fairly steep decent angle keeping it at 70(plus half the guest factor) and no float. The former is a more comfortable stabilized approach for me. This is just what works for me and I hope it in some way helps. Please do not hate me.
  17. Quote: scottfromiowa I would not go any slower over the fence than 70 mph. If you are talking knots there is some room. What's the big deal about a little "float"...better than NOT having enough energy in the flare and stalling and dropping it in, right? Try 1/2 flaps when light or in my hydraullic flaps 3 pumps or 2 instead of four. I am 100mph base to final. 80mph over the fence and power off just letting speed come down and enter flare. I love how the Mooney lands with this formula. If I have weight it's full flaps with same speed. Works out fine for my short body.
  18. Quote: FlyDave From my viewpoint this is a common sense issue. Why introduce engine failure when flying. It's as simple as that.
  19. Quote: 201-FLYER Ok I'm a commercial rated pilot and have been flying for over 15 years. I've owned two Mooney's a J and now a K. I've heard alot of things in my time especially about Mooney's but never anything like this. So I have to ask the question....why in the wild wild west would you want to run your tank dry? What if the other tank's fuel line becomes clogged or blocked for example... then your SOL. These are the thing that NTSB accident reports are made of. I'm not trying to insult anyones flying or judgement making ability but I just don't get it.
  20. The non 3g does not have an assisted GPS. However you can get the wi-fi only an use and external GPS such as the Bad Elf. The Bad Elf GPS is only $99.00 and is well worth it even if you do get the 3g model. The internal gps chip is not very reliable for flying. I will try to post a picture.
