Just another kind of unrelated side note: This mooney is my first real low wing experience, and I was surprised by how much ice I picked up on the wings by taxing through puddles in cold temps. I to have white wings, but it is not hard to see the ice. I actually had to turn back and have my wings deiced in Elmira NY after I failed to avoid puddles when taxing, and build up enough ice to be concerned. Temps were above freezing, but my airframe was not.

I am not an oil expert, but I am an investor, and the only reason the oil prices are going up is due to speculative buying, pure and simple. Investors are are speculating that the turmoil in the middle east will cut supplies. This has traditionally not been the case. A few years ago when oil prices were breaking records per barrel, it was an orchestrated effort between Goldman Sachs and Merrell Lynch to get people to believe there would be this great shortage due to the expanding economies of India and China. This of course never materialized and demand went down by about 20% in the US and the prices fell sharply. The typical scenario is investors run the price up to $100 + per barrel, then demands start to drop, supply doesn't, investors get nervous, price comes down. Also we have only issued one permit to begin drilling in the Gulf where about a third of our oil traditionally comes from. This is a catch 22 for the administration as I understand it, because the industry has failed to show that they have a failsafe cut off valve for deep drill wells. At the same time it is getting a lot of pressure to get this oil flowing again. Also the general consensus is that in the next 15 years we will solve our energy storage issues(batteries), and petroleum will start to take a significant hit, as electric energy can be produced locally in any number of ways. 80 percent of the wealth of our country is now controlled by a little over 1% of the population. They control a lot of power to sway markets through hedge funds. They make their money through volatility, not steady growth. Honestly so do I. But this is not the best thing for all of the 401k fund gen pop people out there. It is the era of deregulation and bubbles. I'm hoping that the old adage buy on the rumor sell on the news holds up!

Power Flow debuts progressive rebates for Mooney
eldeano replied to MooneyMitch's topic in General Mooney Talk
I purchased my m20c with a power flow so I can't compare what it did for my plane, but I did get instruction in a non power flow equipped m20c. You can tell a bit of a difference, it seams to be smoother, but my fuel flow seems to be worse then other m20cs according to what people are saying on this site. I also lean fairly conservatively. Unfortunately, I do not have enough experience in the other m20c to make a true comparison. But it seems to me that climb and takeoff are a little bit better in mine then the other m20c I flew. -
any recommendations on a portable oxygen system
eldeano replied to tbrickey's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I have a 15 cu ft sky-ox system from sporty's. It fits nicely on the back of the seat, and is easy to adjust. It also comes with cannulas as well as one mask. The whole kit including cover that straps on the back of the seat and a nylon bag to hold the accessories was $530.00. Super easy to use with an easy dial regulator. It is the only portable system I have used so I can't really compare it to anything else. -
Traffic Alerting Experience?
eldeano replied to FullyArticulate's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Good to know, I was looking at the Zaon. Thanks for the info! -
Faster processor, more battery life, HD video, better graphics, thinner, I see lots of potential! (sorry, but it's been a whole week since we have had an ipad thread)

I have been flying across the country this week, and the foreflight app and bad elf gps have been great. We have been flight planning on the paper charts. Getting weather on the aera, and following the pink line on the ipad. We also put the direct to info into the gps on the panel. But we have been doing vfr flying in some marginal areas and it is nice to flick the charts around, look at what airports are around and just overfly them like stepping stones so we always have an option. Also it is nice to just take it into the FBOs as almost all of them have wi-fi, and with the weather options on foreflight, especially the ceilings map, it helps you plan ahead. Also having the TAFs translated and in local time is nice. When we come up to unfamiliar airports it is nice to just click on the airports page, taxiways and get a diagram of the airport. Also all of your frequencies are right there as well as FBO info. You quickly become very good at navigating around in the app, then you wondered how you ever lived without it. It would be nice to have terrain info like the skycharts app, but otherwise I would highly recommend it.

You might want to keep looking. We bought a 63 c with 65 hours smoh, six pack guages, new prop, basic Garmin IFR package, paint 10, interior 8 all work and maintenance done at Lasar for the last 12 years for $38,000. Same deal, we wanted something we could pay cash for. However, Jolie is correct, if you plan on flying your growing family, you probably would be better served by an F. The C is good for the two of us and the dog. It also can hold four decent sized adults and full fuel and be within weight, but there is just no room in the backseat to fit them. It also has a semi low maneuvering speed. As far as engine TBO, most engines that are able to go beyond 2000 hours are ones that are flown all of the time and well maintained. Airplanes like to be flown, Keeps things lubed and sealed, and melts away that evil condensation!

I like the fact that I can fit the Aera on the yoke and refer to it more easily. It also is much brighter and has more features then the Skyradar app. I lose reception of the ADS-B for some reason sometimes over the Cascade Mountains which is when I need it the most. Also the sensitivity of the ipad gets me sometimes, with the Aera you have to touch and push in a little, this is helpful in the chop. I love my Ipad, don't get me wrong. But for my situation the Aera-ipad combo works best right now. I usually have Charts up on the ipad and the Aera is my moving map weather reference. Skyradar GPS has been flawless and I hope to soon have geo-referenced Approach Plates on the ipad. Hope this helps

I have the Aera 510 with wx and it works great. I also have an ipad with a skyradar box. Still using the aera for wx and moving map. I use the ipad more for SIDs and aproach plates as well as airport diagrams, and seamless charts. I find the seamless enroute low charts in both skycharts and flight publications overlap at a bad place in the Seattle area and some info is omitted around the area I fly. The aera is smaller and easier to refer to on the yoke during a scan. Also it is good for figuring the winds. I am not however looking forward to paying for the updates. I already have to pay enough to Jeppesen to update my panel GPS.

I too have a paint shop scam.......oh I mean IFR rating. I thought it was the funnest rating I got. Opens up a new world.

No more life through foggles! Congratulations!

I am not sure that this could be right but in the FAA database the Tracy Mahoney from Texas shows that he got his student pilot license issued on JANUARY 13, 2011. Weiser is a challenging airport for anyone. Glad he walked away.

Guys, if any of you can come on that weekend please email me so that I can keep count of you. There are only about 30 spots or so on the ramp. Eric

Our puppy Gir loves to fly. Doesn't mind the little seat belt harness, but is not a big fan of the puppy headset. Actually, it was a big selling point for the girlfriend for purchasing the plane. Puppy can come with us where ever we go dear!

Quote: peter I have a question for all you iPad users: Where do you put the thing? I've tried using an iPad a couple of times now and can't really make it fit. This is using a RAM yoke mount iPad clamp. For instrument work a paper chart on a yoke clip still seems to work best for me. I really like the utility offered by the iPad as an electronic chart case, but I keep getting stuck on where to put it. Suggestions?

Alright, I love my ipad, but using it as primary navigation tool anywhere, much less in the LA area is crazy. With or without an external GPS using it for precise anything just is not a good idea. It has been good for getting en route weather, flight planning, approach plates (with printed backup) and having a nice big moving map much larger then my aera.

(Disclaimer: I am not an A&P and this is the first aircraft I have owned) One of the things that attracted me to my older Mooney is the simplicity of the design, ie non stressed skins, manual gear, push pull tubes. I remember about ten years ago they had one at a flight school I used to rent from. The A&P told me the Mooney cost less to maintain then the newer Cessnas. I also read the m20c review at mooneypilot.com (I think) and it basically said the same thing.
