  1. Looks good! Hard to know how fast you'll go yet. I'm assuming you're still breaking in the engine.
  2. The three heaviest noses in the flare that I have flown in order of force required, are the 182, Piper Arrow IV and the Mooney. All are easily tamed with the use of trim. You may end up near full up trim, but so what? Trim is your friend in all phases of flight.
  3. One downside to the twisted wing that hasn't been mentioned. If you have dreams and asperations of putting the latter, sexy 231 wing tips on, forget it. Nobody ever made a wing tip mod for the twisted wing. However, if you really, really, really want to, it is possible. The twisted wing can be converted back to a standard wing by removing and rebuilding I think about 1/3 on the outboard of the wing. Not cheap.
  4. This is an excellent testiment as to why an oil annalysis and cutting open a filter is not the final word to determining engine health. On a recent thread on the AOPA forum about running past TBO, the concensus was that as long as the oil annalysis came back clean and the filter turns up clean, there is no reason to ever rebuild an engine and the 2000 hours that the FAA and Lycoming recommend is hogwash. I personally think the TBO number is kind of like an annual. It's not about rebuilding because it's all worn out as much as it is getting in there and doing an inspection to all the things like idler gears coming loose, or perhaps cracks in the case that you can't see on the outside. On an engineering note, I'm surprised that the bolts holding the idlers on aren't fine threads. I think their use of a course thread bolt contributed to the loosening, but I guess we are talking 1950's tech, so...
  5. Quote: carusoam "Is there a way to just use a tail weight to relieve enough pressure off of the nose gear to remove it and reinstall it?" dmevans, I have heard about putting a rod through the tow handle hole. Jack stand (block) on one side and jack on the other. [1] you only need to get it of the ground a small amount. [2] use a second jack stand (block) to hold the plane up, don't leave pressure on the jack. -a-
  6. IMO, I think it comes down to the size of the glass. The small Aspen displays leave me thinking that they are not that big of a deal and in fact, tend to try to cram too much information into too small an area. The G1000 on the other hand, with laptop sized screen configured to be a huge AI with synthetic vision, how can that not be a safety improvement?
  7. The idea of all this skilled labor going unutilized makes me very sad. Not just for Mooney, or Kerrville, but for America. I fantisized today about moving to Kerrville to employ these people to make high end aviation furniture. Kind of like what Motoart does, but instead of finding old airplane parts in the boneyard and trying to make them into furniture, start from scratch. Making new structures using aircraft materials and techniques to make functional things for your home or hanger that look like they could have come from an airplane, or have a distinct aviation feel, but are purpose built and functional.
  8. Quote: Mitch Alright, this is getting too funny again. A very good Mooney pilot friend of mine is considering the Pampers route. He and his wife are going to try them out while watching the 6 o'clock news, in the comfort of their own home, prior to actually using them during a long upcoming cross country Mooney flight.
  9. Well, I found out that if you do get a photo in there, don't try to go back and edit the post. It ends up doing some seriously wacky stuff! I cannot for the life of me remove the large space below the photo above. It was caused because I tried to edit text in that post. Well, it kind of works anyways. I'll keep experimenting.
  10. Trying again...
  11. I guess not quite. index.cfm Maybe this works.
  12. Ok, trying another test with Safari this time. Oooh. It worked! Guess I have to use Safari with this forum.
  13. I'm sure that Richard Branson is smart enough to stay away from GA aircraft production as an investment, and if he's not flying a Mooney now, it's not likely he'll want anything to do with it. Besides, his disposable income is clearly earmarked for space travel and as much as it pains me to say this, I think this is a nobler cause than saving an old airplane company on the rocks. Still, there are plenty of other rich guys out there. Surely one of them must have owned a Mooney in their past.
  14. I'm struggling with the two options myself. I intend to go to the AOPA meet in Long Beach and demo them both. I like the extra features on the MVP-50, but the 930's display looks a bit nicer. However, the MVP-50 may have a better user interface. I currently have a JPI EDM 700 and I'm not all that impressed with it. It does what it's supposed to, but I don't find it very user friendly. I'm hoping that both companies have made improvements in this area. A live demo is the only way I can tell. I'm also hoping I can get a show special price.
  15. Just running a test- Ok- I've run a bunch of test posts here and I cannot make it work. Where do you need the image to be? On your hard drive or on the web, or on this site, like in the gallery? What browser do you use?
  16. Wow! Thanks m204ever! Thanks for taking that apart so we could all see. That must be a 70's airframe as the one on the '67 is very different. What you have is much simpler and probably much better. Anybody have pictures of a mid 60's apart? Here is what my parts manual for a '68 shows it looks like-
  17. I think a brand new Hartzell Scimitar two blade is only $8,000 with new polished spinner IIRC. If I were thinking of a new prop, I'd go that way because you gain a little climb and tiny bit of speed too and all zero time.

  20. A suggestion to make this forum even more awesome. Would it be possible to make it so we could have photos inbedded in the body of the post? The vBulletin software does this by allowing the poster to provide a link to a photo somewhere else on the web. This feature IMO enhances the story telling ability or process narrative by having illustrations be part of the post instead of having them as sort of footnotes. An example would be when someone is doing a mod or repair to their plane and want to share with others, this allows them to create a step by step instructional narrative within the post. Anybody else think this would be good?
  21. Quote: robert14 Mooney sold me the M20-182-000 kit for about $240 and overnighted via UPS.
  22. On your cowl flap issue, I would check the play in the hinges and the edges of the flaps for rough spots, burrs, bolts or rivets sticking out. What sounds like is happening is, when you are in flight, the wind is pushing one of both flaps to the side and the edge of the flap is binding on the opening. This would explain why it works perfectly on the ground but only go half way in flight. Perhaps also your exhaust stack could be loose and shifting enough to block the flap from coming up. It's just speculation on my part, but I really believe the the wind is shifting thigs around and causing the problem.
  23. I intend to go now. Probably Friday and Saturday. I'll look for you guys at the block party.
  24. Hey KJATct, How's that SWTA 201 cowl coming along?
