  1. Quote: 1964-M20E Just bought my first plane a 64E in May and I like it. I was told the same thing by Zef (Mooney Land) stay away from pre 65's. He said they used smaller steel tubing in the roll cage pre 65 among other things. Of course I had to specifically inquire why he advised against pre 65's. I like the rounded windows I think they look better. The previous owners upgraded to a standard 6 pack instruments, IFR and Garmin 300, GEM 602 and all other digital avionics. Off topic Mooney should go back and make a basic no frills E or F model with manual everything.
  2. Quote: FlyDave The fact is that there are ASSHOLES out there that would explode a bomb on an airliner again given any opportunity. It's one of the ugly facts of the world we live in. I don't like having to deal with this but WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT.

  4. Quote: Mitch Ben Franklin and the like, would absolutely roll over if they knew the crap we are putting up with and now taking for granted!!!!!!
  5. Did you ask this question over on the AOPA board in the Medical Matters Forum? There's some really knowledgeble doctors over there.
  6. Just thought of something. If GAMI starts making and selling AVGAS, maybe APS will start recommending ROP operations instead!
  7. I really, really hope the Swift folks can gain some traction. If their solution is as good as they say it is, I would love to buy AVgas that isn't dependent on oil and the oil companies. The GAMI solution and the crappy 94UL solution, still requires one of the traditional refiners to take over and boil us up our fuel from foreign oil. I know it won't happen. Path of least resistance is for the oil companies to keep feeding us and the Arabs to keep feeding them, so that's what we'll get. AVgas will go up and up in price, when it could go down and down.
  8. Good looking panel! Did you consider the EI MVP-50? If so, what made you choose the 930? Just curious because I'm wrestling with these issues now.
  9. Congratulations Jolie and Mitch! Much deserved recognition. You guys actually do way more than most and I admire you spirit and energy. I don't know who else was in contention for the award, but I can't think of more qualified recipients than you guys. Well done! I hope to see you guys at Long Beach. Not sure what my schedulel is now. The reason I didn't make Livermore this weekend is my back went out on me again last week. I literally can't raise my hanger door or push my plane right now. I have some threads going on the AOPA forums about ways to aid with that and hopefully soon I can fly again. Stand for hours and walk for miles at a convention? I'm not so sure right now. We'll see what the MRI shows. Anyhow, I'm thrilled for you guys!
  10. Things to consider on this subject: Generators don't work at low RPM. Generators weigh about 6-7 lbs more. Generators run hotter and need more cooling. There are no airplanes, cars, trucks or boats sold in America that have a generator in it and it's been that way for about 40 years. You can buy a brand new, zero time, factory built alternator. Generators are just rebuilt. Genarators make less power per size and weight. In generators defense: Generators are easily rebuilt. Generators die slowly, so you often get a bit of warning before lights out. A generator may already be in your plane and so the cheapest way to keep it flying.

  12. Quote: M016576 If you're planning on heading to Colorado in the winter (ski season), then realize that any sort of legit IMC flight is probably going to be off the table (due to icing). With that in mind, you need to be flexible in terms of your travel dates. A turbo may be able to get you climbing over weather, but you can't decend back through it.... so in my books, if the weather is looking poor, it's best to not even try in a light civil in winter time in the mountains.
  13. Get out the tin snips. As long as you preserve the steel cage, I'm sure it'll still fly.

  15. I'd like some glider training someday. I think it would be a nice experience and I would like to know how to find thermals and the best ways to exploit them. Also time doing for real dead stick landings over and over should really help one day in the event of an engine failure. In the end, I too am a powered plane lover, just as I prefer power boats over sail boats.
  16. Quote: Mitch We are supposed to retrive the plane in 4 weeks. We'll let you know the results.
  17. Quote: flyboy0681 I have to admit I never knew about the 400W. The price difference between the two, $1,800, is small enough to go with the 430W and get rid of one of my KX155's. I would have thought the difference would be at least 3 grand.
  18. I've got a generator too. Mine was rebuilt in 2006 I think. It might work fine. I'm not sure because I it never really got tested. Anybody want it?
  19. I rode in an M20E that had the inflatable door seal. I couldn't tell the difference between it and a regular seal. I would skip it. It also has the problem of the hand bulb you use to inflate it and it's curly hose takes up space in an already well occupied cockpit with no particular place to put it.
  20. I'd like to go. Do I need to register or anything, or just show up?
  21. Quote: Vref btw in europe (Belgium) the classical edison light bulb is fading out quickly (can not officially be sold in the shops anymore)
  22. Interesting fact about Crissy Field in San Francisco. Many of you who looked at my pictures posted above may have notice that Crissy Field looks a lot like a grass field airport. Well, it used to be. From 1915 to it's closure in 1974, it was a military airfield and part of the Presido military complex. It was turned over to the City in 1990 when the Presidio closed. It has since been somewhat restored to it's original airfield condition, except nobody can actually land an airplane there. It is used as a park. People flying on a Bay tour as I have, always keep an eye on it as an emergemcy landing site. Actually landing there would probably be be pretty ugly because it is usually pretty populated with people.
  23. Some more fun with Mooneys :
  24. Making up for my lack of pictures before. A bay tour:
