Quote: N9154V When I took my Checkride about 2 1/2 years ago, The examiner asked when I scheduled the apointment, What equipment do you have? When I told her a 430, KX155, she said great. We knew what airports were close to her home base. Plan on an ILS, GPS and a VOR approach. She did not cover up my GPS's, and allowed me to use my 496 also. She was very impressed with the panel in my 69F. She also had me do a DME arc of off a VOR. All approach's except the last were missed. If you have an autopilot, you mus toperate it on 1 approach. My last approach was the GPS, using the autopilot and a circle to land. I sure bounced that landing, but recovered nicely. After the debriefing, I walked around the airport o relax before flying home. If you have an ADF, dissable it, or be ready to do an approach, your choice. Ron

My plan should have me taking my flight test mid-November. I'm excited to have it almost completed. I must say, it has already made me a MUCH better VFR pilot.

Wing X

We have it offset slightly to the right with it in landscape to give better hand access to the yoke. We have it currently mounted in portrait, which I don't have pictures of which makes it easier to see approach plates. We have perfect visibility of all the instruments and it is not in the way during landing flare, even for my short legs!
-
My plane partner has it and it is of good build. He has longer legs and never had a problem in our J regarding clearance. I'm 5-9 and there is no way I could have used it in the cockpit. It would definitely get in the way of the yoke. However, since I purchased a RAM yoke mount for my iPad he never uses the kneeboard anymore. He prefers the yoke mount. The yoke mount is just much more useful with easier visibility and easier access to the iPad when having to locate information on it.

I'm wondering the same thing. I have a 10 week old and want to take her flying "soon."

The S-Tec alt hold is our next purchase. Does anyone know what I can expect to pay for purchasing and installing the S-Tec 30 alt hold?

We fly our J with the Aspen and Century IIB. It works flawlessly and I agree with Jetdriven and M016576 that having GPSS with a Century IIB is a significant upgrade.

My uncle has a turbo Arrow based out of KABQ. Last summer my wife and I flew over to visit and he had never been in a Mooney before. We took off out of KABQ in our J and he could not believe the performance with this normally aspirated plane as we quickly climbed over the Sandias. He was impressed. The link below is a good article comparing the turbo arrow to the J. http://www.planecheck.com/turboarrow.htm

I know you may not want to do this, but the Aspen PFD has built-in GPSS. I know it would be an extra expense, but it may be something to consider.

I read the Machado instrument book and also supplemented it with the King videos. I then took the study buddy on Sporty's, which is free.

Has anyone installed ADS-B for I-Pad?

Quote: Mitch Speed is always the key in our Mooneys for landings. If this is correct on approach to either runway [29/11], then attempting to hit the numbers is not a requirement. With the E, we can be off the runway at the first exit. The R can be the same.

201 not meeting performance expectations
ToddDPT replied to dsking001's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Something just isn't right. That just is way too slow for our 201s. I'm definitely interested in knowing what your MAPs are. We see 158 kts TAS at 11,000/12,000 feet at WOT 2450 RPM. -
Flying from SBP I would go to VGT. I've been to both and VGT by far the best choice. From Visalia, I've been into both VFR and VGT is easy and not near as far to travel to and from the strip as HND. We have flown 2 different routes from Visalia and it looks like from SBP you have similar routes. The quickest route as long as the winds aren't blowing too much is from SBP to cut the northwest corner of R-2505. We usually then head towards Indian Springs (KINS). This gives you enough time to get down in altitude to VGT and we always have been cleared straight in for 12. I've been cleared multiple times through the China Lake restricted airspace (R-2505) and that would give you a direct flight towards KINS plus keep the terrain over the Sierras a little lower. The terrain is not as forgiving that far north and if you prefer lower terrain and can't get clearance through China Lake then you could shoot the gap between R-2505 and R-2524 to L72 then head to the northwest of the Vegas airspace in the direction of KINS.

Where are you flying this weekend?

Flying into Fullerton to go to the Angels/Yankees game on 9/11. Good excuse to take my instructor to continue my IFR training. Oh so close to taking my flight test! -
A few ??-may have someone buying in to my plane.
ToddDPT replied to rbridges's topic in General Mooney Talk
I too think partnerships are a great idea. 1/2 partnerships having the best balance between the least amount of headache and the most available flight time. Our buy-out agreement is similar to Jetdriven's. We split the fixed costs and charge ourselves a hourly rate to fly (gas + maintenance) and keep a log in the plane recording inidividual flight time that we bill to one another each month. We have a "company credit card" we charge fuel to and then just pay it off at the end of the month. Definitely use Quickbooks. It's very helpful. One thing we do with respect to blocked flight time we just split the month and I have the plane "reserved" the first half of the month and my partner has the plane the second. If he wants to fly the plane during the first half he just has to contact me and see if I'm using it or not. If I am, he's out! For vacations, we just let each other know well ahead of time and plan for it so there isn't any overlap. Communication is the key. IMO you will be very happy with a partnership. -

Quote: scottfromiowa If you have a GPS version of I-Pad does internal GPS work if you are NOT paying the monthly 3G Fee? -
We have the FL150. We have not had any freezing or crashing problems. In my opinion, choosing one of these units depends on what you want to use it for as well what other equipment you have. With the iPad, 430W, and Aspen EFD1000 I only use it for weather mostly and for a backup GPS. I have been experimenting with it for for approaches during IFR as reference for altitudes, etc and it seems to work pretty well there as well, but again, my iPad with Wing X and geo referenced approach plates are still clearer and easier to work with. The big plus are the subscriptions costs and for a backup GPS I don't want to spend anymore than I have to. They are a lot cheaper than Garmin and that is why we decided on it. Garmin is definitely an easier interface to use so I think if I were using it for more than just weather I probably would consider a Garmin. I think the FL650 and FL210 are more user friendly than the FL150. Give the True Flight people a call. You will have to leave a message, but they will get back to you. They will demo a unit with you and are not pushy at all.

I agree with fantom. Get rid of that boat anchor!

My wife and I were looking at these for her, but we don't see anywhere you can hook an mp3 player to it. Without a music port, that is a deal killer for her. Am I missing something?

For what it's worth, we bought our 201 from Jimmy site unseen last August and we couldn't be happier. AAA is top notch and when I decide to move up they will be the first guys I contact. Thanks again Jimmy! -
Great trip!
