  1. I gave up on renewing the SI because of all the hoops and delays with OKC Med every year. Held !st Class for 40+years Had an eye issue (not changing) but they delayed every reissue of the SI for months and that subtracted from the valid 1 year time limit every time. Decided after the last Si issuance to go Basic Med and never looked back If you can deal with the limitations - altitude, seats, speed, no Canada (that may change) then go Basic Med and get OKC out of your life. I have better care by my GP now than I ever had trying to stay certified in Class 1 or 3. You need to have held a valid FAA med to qualify to go Basic Med but now if you are in the lineup for another class med then you'll need to wait it out. If you make it great! Go get the Basic Med If you don't you may be out of luck.
  2. Real good review Thanks!
  3. Granted that it "looks" to be a broken gauge BUT its proper trouble shooting to check all the connections and fuses BEFORE firing the parts cannon. You have two wires coming down from the shunt each has a fuse in line. Connections can corrode even when tightly connected for 60 years making the connection bad Fuses are connected to the wiring by springs or slide connectors, they too can corrode The standard rules apply - Check and clean all connections (even if it means disconnecting to do so) and then check the end point for power (amps or volts) Most( even cheap) volt/ohm meters have a current check up to about 10 amps built in. This is where your A&P comes in to check the connection at the back of the instrument to see if the millivolt signal is even getting to the instrument. If it is then its a gauge exchange or repair job. Mooney used two types of clusters, older planes had an all in one 6 pack that has to be serviced as a unit (6 gauges) Newer Mooneys had individual gauges that can be serviced separate. If to fix yours takes all 6 then look to the STC'd after market gauges or just pick up a cluster from a junk yard dealer Now to be technical- this is not a DIY job for the owner legally. Nor is going inside the gauge unless its in a certified instrument repair shop Not passing judgement, just saying what the rules say. Also if its not required (?) then it should be placarded as 'INOP" per FARs (Why was it in there from certification if it was not required?) I too like a volt meter better.
  4. I guess I'm too used to Boeings! :-) :-) I guess its too old of a term?
  5. Nothing wrong with that decision Fly it for a while before you decide on what to change
  6. What ever happened to DuPont DULUX enamel? Used to spray it after heating it in hot water for a better flow! :-) The airplane listed above has many red flags in my mind Do not consider it unless you have someone with you who KNOWS Mooneys and what to look for There is a reason why its stripped clean. It has all the markers of neglect to me. The control rod shown CAN be changed but it is indicative of deeper areas of neglect It has been sitting outside in the rain for a long period of time with no real care. Caution is the word
  7. Ain't much in Parowan anyway :-) I live near by Got a good Mexican restaurant though. :-)
  8. Don't forget to do the control wheel AD for cracks before you put the yoks back on Saves taking it off again for 500 hrs What did you use on the control wheels? They look good. Be careful! The dye goes everywhere!
  9. When you have it off you might do the AD on it (77-17-04) so you don't have to do it all over again Its a 500 hr AD for cracks. IIRC
  10. Is it understood that if the rod comes apart we are talking about being on jacks?
  11. A C model can vary its speed by 3-5 kts just by CG location alone. Way FWD 135 kts way aft 140 kts on average for most airplanes.
  12. Overhauls are not needed at 500 hrs Only and IRAN I've done mine IRAN with no issues and lots less cost Just counselled another Mooney owner to do an IRAN and not expensive overhaul He's happy. The shop I use is a one man operation and he KNOWS mags Been doing them for decades.
  13. Go to "FORUMS" page to view all forums At top of that page you will see "DONATIONS TO MOONEYSPACE" banner Click on it and then look in the first entry and find "THIS LINK" Click on that -
  14. Now that I have recovered from being sick I can respond better to this thread Some may have gone astray from my OP and read more into it than I intended I was only commenting on what I saw all of a sudden It had nothing to do with the value of the website (or any cost thereof) Also as I noted I was getting ready to donate anyway so the idea of a "pay wall" so to speak played no part in my question I did comment that if it was planned then I thought some would take great umbrage with the idea the way it suddenly appeared and what it did to viewability. As I noted I have become a supporter (way beyond the min) BUT I also note that the viewing events that I commented on disappeared 2 days ago on its own long before I decided to donate. The problem just disappeared for me at least. I hope this clears up any misunderstanding.
  15. I should have put "pay wall" in quotation marks as a figure of speech My question was only that what has changed (letting the banner come down over 60-70% of the page) "seems" very similar to a pay wall. Also I have no issue with the donation system. Its up front and honest. Its just that suddenly the top banner drops down to cover most of the page and can't be driven away. Something has changed that many are seeing I'd just like to know why the change? Is the answer so as to drive mort traffic to the donation arena? If so just say so. No recriminations. no hard feelings Just asking a straight question- mooniac58- Was a change made to the opening page to drop the banner down over 70% of the page and if so why? I do feel though that newbies to the forum may think twice about coming in if this change persists JMO
  16. Here's a question I've never seen asked or answered- WHO actually owns and/or controls this web site? I've been here for years and I don't think that question has ever come up As a second thought- Maybe if they were to come online and actually explain just what expenses they have to pay out (in detail) to keep this website alive (instead of just a generic request for donations), actually explain the process, it might go a long way to garnering more donations from those who are reluctant but who enjoy using the site. Mooneyspace is a small community in reality and they might just come together with the correct approach rather than suffer the complete loss of the website Building a surprise pay wall with no explanation doesn't create a good feeling to most.
  17. Its going to have an adverse affect on readership I didn't mind the small ads as a free sub but I do take umbrage with the forcing ads now. Many will just drop off viewing. Like I said I was going to donate anyway but this is the wrong way to go for many who view the site.
  18. Exactly what I thought BUT I was going to donate this month anyway Did a complete clean and shut down to cold but of course it came back I just love the IT life :-(
  19. OK I'll try that Not a pc geek here :-)
  20. HP laptop Still there top banner covers about 70% of the screen with a large ad in the middle
  21. Today when I went to look into MS I have found that after the opening page a Google ad pops up and the top banner drops down to cover about 70% of the screen making reading anything very difficult As I said- Is it something I did or have we gone a new direction to force large ad space on the forum pages?
  22. Just a short thought- What many SE/single generator/single battery IFR pilots miss is doing a battery capacity check every year. Their only "out" with a gen failure is the ships battery. If it ain't up to snuff they may have only minutes of power available. Just because it started the engine doesn't mean it will run the panel for even half an hour to get you down And it will take 1/2 hr. What ever you decide on for a ride do - perform a battery capacity check if you plan on IMC conditions At the price of batteries today ($400+) I'd now include that in a pre-buy inspection I've flown a lot in the west mountains in all kinds of weather and a/c in the last 60 years If I were you I'd look at turbos to get high I don't know your background but if you can, take a high altitude chamber ride so you know your own Hypoxia limits. Always have a plan on where to go down if the O2 quits!!!!
  23. It was a comment much like Montezuma's Revenge :-) BUT I'm sure it has been used and IIRC even the military uses it or something similar on long deployments of single seat a/c.
  24. Can you avail yourself of this AC with your country of registration? Exactly which "bungees" are you referring to? Where are they located? I would think that a good glass bead blast and paint would be all that was needed.
