Family - not interested in flying
PTK replied to Fred as in Flintstone's topic in General Mooney Talk
Your opinions are different from hers. She doesn't think her fears and concerns are overstated. You say they are overstated but she may feel you are overly trivializing and downplaying them. You are forcing her to accept a dangerous activity and she can't. Persisting to ignore her feelings will only make things worse and you will drift apart. She is unhappy and miserable with this situation. If you feel she is holding you back from doing what you enjoy and is the source of her antagonism towards you, it's time for a very serious discussion with your wife. Feeling this way does not make for a healthy marriage. You need to decide what you treasure most: your wife and marriage or flying around. It doesn't appear you can have both. And that's ok but you can't blame her and she shouldn't blame you. But she is being more than reasonable. If I I'm reading your post correctly you decided to take up flying one day, she went along with an open mind and concluded that it's not for her. Now you find yourselves in a dilemma that you caused by your decision, not she. Time for a heart to heart discussion with your wife. -
Here’s an appropriate one: “Jo & Ho 2020”

This is the most opportune time to upgrade to GI275 ADHRS+AP. Think of it this way: Costwise you’re half way there so you’re getting the upgrade at ~50% discount!
-
Some do and some don’t. For example I fly an Ovation2 occasionally with a push button vernier throttle. My J has the standard simple throttle with friction lock which I much prefer. Wouldn’t want this in my hand on a go around!
-
I have flown both standard and vernier throttles and don't care for the latter nor do I think its necessary. Maybe because I’m used to it but I much prefer the standard. My throttle is wo literally from takeoff to setting up for the approach and landing. And it is much easier to use when you need instant power. And with no button to malfunction has much lower chances of failure.

That seems on the high end. I had my pitch servo repaired a couple of years ago by autopilot central for around 700$. I seem to remember they changed the solenoid and tach motor. It is original to the airplane and the only repair it had since it was born in Kerville. Good for another 25 years!

Can someone share what it costs to install a GFC500 in a Mooney? I’ve seen numbers as high as 23K and as low as 14K$. That’s a 10K$ delta! Cost of the hardware is around 7K$. Brackets are all prefabricated by Garmin and there are a couple of wires to each servo also provided. I don’t see the install to be that difficult to justify a 2 or 3x higher cost than the hardware!

How enjoyable would flying by yourself be? I wouldn't enjoy doing something I love without sharing it with the loves of my life! My wife and our twin sons. Much less so if I have to leave her all alone worrying! I would never ever do that to my wife! You may want to find something you both love to do and share! -

Is that what she's doing really, or is it that she loves her husband and dreads the prospect of being a widow? In her mind its a real prospect. Be sensitive to her reality! Let’s face it, what we do is dangerous! I’ve owned my Mooney about 14 years now. During that time more Mooney pilots have perished than I can count on both hands. And that’s just Mooney owners/pilots not counting others! -

Yes, but you want to leave her and go out flying knowing full well she will be consumed by fear until you return. This only serves to put her on an anxiety rollercoaster. Bad! Compounded by feelings of invalidation and that you simply don’t care. Also very bad! -

It may seem illogical to you but anxiety can be very consuming. You have to empathize with and understand her view. Do not invalidate or diminish her fears. You may very well have to forget flying. Not all is lost however. You can cultivate othet activities you can both enjoy. Boating, fishing, golf, biking, gardening, etc. etc. But for you to ignore her feelings and run out to go flying only invalidates her and adds to her anxiety. After a while it will build into resentment. Again this is your wife and not an insignificant other. -
Bob, would you please expand on this a little bit? How does a third GI275 + ADAHRS retain AP functionality in a failover? This sounds very interesting and I’d like to learn more! its a question I had asked Garmin about with a dual GI275 failover. They said only one GI275 can be interfaced to the ap according to the STC. But I never thought to ask about if a third GI275 in the mix will retain ap functionality. How is that done and how would it work? I have the KFC150. Thanks

What I’m hearing here is disturbing frankly. A lot of advice on trying to change his wife’s mind. What about changing his mind? What are his prioritIes? Flying around or respecting his wife’s very reasonable fear and apprehension? She is clearly scared of this activity. Where does respecting your wife’s sensitivities and accepting her very valid concerns enter into the discussion? Do they make any difference? She is being reasonable and has legitimate concerns. This is not golfing or fishing! This is flying! And this is your wife, not an insignificant acquaintance. Disregarding and trivializing her feelings and opinions and trying to convince her to accept something she clearly fears, is very selfish! -

You show your understanding by accepting and respecting the fact that your wife who has different ideas and opinions is a lot more important to you than flying. She is correct, GA is inherently dangerous and is trying to make you see that she doesn’t enjoy it. You must respect her wishes and her needs. That’s what a loving husband who is committed to his bride and his marriage does. Flying must go. Sorry! -
Where are you based? You should plan to fly to GED at some point. You’ll invariably run into one or two other Mooneys there. And with a little planning I can be there. Lunch on me!
-
This is utterly irrelevant. Misses the point entirely and fails to make a positive contribution to the discussion at hand.
-
@Kmac, as a rule I steer clear of these FBO’s and Signature especially. Sometimes you can’t avoid them and in those instances I always call ahead to see what to expect. Next time you may want to consider going to GED. Extremely reasonable fuel cost, nice restaurant, clean lounge and facilities, crew car, and a very generous fuel discount for eating at the restaurant. Plus the bonus of getting taxes refunded from the State of DE by submitting your receipts. Your net fuel cost comes under 4$/gal. I fill up there regularly. Very nice people providing excellent service with a smile! No hassle and no fees!

Lesson learned. Plane will not start. Contact cleaner?
PTK replied to willerjim273's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Totaly agree. I wrestled with an intermittent starting issue for several months. Would start fine half the time. The other half of the times it was hit or miss and would only start after fussing with the ign switch. My mechanic insisted it was the starter solenoid which we replaced. It seemed to get better but not 100%. It persisted. Then one day away from home it did it to me again. I had enough and resolved to replace the ignition switch. No fuss since. -

Learned Something New about GPS Approaches with the KFC200
PTK replied to jlunseth's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
The GI275 installation requires verification of proper autopilot functionality prior to doing the upgrade. Mostly to check pitch and roll centering. The autopilot sometimes needs a slight readjustment after the new device driving it is replaced. These are very fine adjustments. Less than half a turn travel on the pots. They can be very easily damaged if not aware of this and/or not very careful! @flysamo, sounds to me it wasn’t limitations on the autopilot. Rather your autopilot failed to pass the requirements. -
@Jeph357, do you have any #1 left? I’ll take 2 of them!

Aspen Avionics Enters into Agreement with the AIRO Group

You mistyped it. This is an example of how you can confuse your potential market. Maybe you should go back and correct yourself to say what you want to say. It’s not up to me to read and re-read and draw references. This is not high school!
