  1. Realize, I did buy a Mooney. But the Tiger is nice for a simpler airplane. And they are a hoot to fly. Both are the fastest in their class. A Tiger is faster than most 200 HP retracts, EXCEPT Mooneys.
  2. Currently I have an Aspen 1000 Pro with GTN-650Xi, GTX-345, G-5, King nav/com and KAP-150 autopilot. I was planning on doing a major upgrade in a year or so to G3X, add a GTN-750Xi and GFC-500 autopilot. But Aspen has some great deals for another week with trade in. So it would be relatively cheap to change to an Aspen 2000 Pro Max setup, or even a 2500. So Aspen upgrade now? Or wait to do Garmin?

  4. What I would like to find is dual USB-C Smart outlets. Since I already have two USB-A on pilot side. That would be great for pax side.
  5. You are still paying more for your annuals to have the gear swung and rigging checked. And more for insurance
  6. And realize the prices for engines. Right now, a factory new IO-360 is about $90,000. A factory reman engine is about $55,000 And factory overhauled engine is about $48,000. You also have the option of going to the IO-390. And there are other costs. Labor to remove and replace. Typically you will replace the hoses at the same time. Also, having the motor mount inspected and possibly repaired. According to the paperwork, when they replaced the engine in mine, the motor mount was "repaired" by replacing every tube except one.
  7. GREAT synopsis. But some expansion on the M20K. There are 3 models of M20K. M20K 231 - This was the first turbo charged Mooney. Basically a M20J 201 with a 6 cylinder Continental TSIO-360 with 210 HP. A bit more work to fly as it does not have an auto waste gate and no intercooler. They can be added though. M20K 252 - This where they added the intercooler and auto waste gate. Also came standard with speed brakes. M20K Encore - A 252 with a slightly different engine (220 HP) and a higher gross weight. Nicer interior. The sweet spot, IMO, is the 252. Mainly because you can easily convert it to Encore specs and get a 230 pound GW increase, and they are lighter than the Encore. But I am a BIT biased, as that is what I own. Cruising in the mid-teens, I see 175 KTAS on about 10.3 GPH. With the Monroy extended tanks that is 8 hours or 1400 miles. Maryland to mid-FL in 5.5 - 6 hours.
  8. There are some ADs about inspecting and some possible repairs. But most planes are fine. IIRC, there can be some issues with improper use of paint strippers. Oh, the later AG Tigers or ones with the Sensenich prop STC are around 140-142 KTAS airplanes with fixed gear and fixed pitch prop.
  9. Website for airports and food - https://flightsforbites.com/ Fairly new site, building as time goes on
  10. Not exactly all the records. All the 337s. But not all maintenance.
  11. I like my Redline Sidewinder. And you can fold it and take it with you for use at other locations.
  12. Where is the airplane?
  13. I see, that is not a good thing.
  14. One instance where there was a issue with the FAA due to how it appeared. Otherwise OPP are fine.
  15. I know Blackstone will transfer an N-number with the past results to a new owner. Does anyone know of them releasing info to someone else?
  16. Mooney M20 is certificated in 1955. All later M20s are modifications of the original TC, so all Mooneys are covered Hmmm, among production aircraft, Cirrus is one of the few that would not be covered.
  17. If the price works for you, it is a good price. Over the life of the plane, the price is a small part. Big thing is get a GOOD pre-purchase inspection. That will save you a lot in the long run. Modern panels are not cheap, so, IMO, get a reasonable one to start out. I would really consider a J or beyond. The extra speed is nice. In the philosophy to buy your last airplane first. Or Buy Once, Cry Once. If you are looking at much travel to the west of you, turbo would be nice. As has been said, find a good mechanic first. I can't help you in IA, but locally I have a great Mooney guy nearby and the shop at my field is also quite good with a good bit of Mooney experience (3 on the field).
  18. No, the MC clock has two ports. The newer O2D2 you can leave the batteries in, and if the cords comes out of the power stops, it will run off the batteries. Older ones are different.
  19. Back in college a buddy rebuilt the engine in his car. It would not start. My first reaction was distributor 180 out. Spun it around, same thing. It would pop, so of fire. We spent all afternoon trying to figure it. Finally went back to putting it TDC on compression and checking. He managed to get it in 90 degrees out. So swapping it 180 degrees, it was still 90 out.
  20. When I was flying gliders with Soar Hawaii, they required the buttons to be removed from hats if flying in their gliders. They had instances of the button punching a perfect little hole in the canopy.
  21. Except Grumman is fixed gear and fixed pitch prop. Lower maintenance costs and lower insurance costs.
  22. I have had the same issue with Apple cords. I have a couple of Ankar now that seem to be more robust. One that I carry is USB-A to plug into power and 3 tails with Lightning, USB-C, and Micro USB ends. You can use more than one tail at a time. My plane came with a MidContinent digital clock with 2x USB-A ports. I might consider replacing it with their version with 1 - USB-A and 1 - USB-C. Or just keep it and add USB-C panel mount power device. From my side, I use one for my iPad Mini (and it charges it slowly in use) and one for my Mountain High O2D2
  23. In Mooney speeds, I would take it to KGAI and have Byron do the inspection. But before that, have him take a look at the logs. He saved me the cost of a couple of pre-buys with a log inspection
  24. How often are the calibrated? Digital does not mean more accurate, it just means they give the wrong number to more precision.
