Replaced Starter - Invoice was WAY more than expected
BobbyH replied to gwav8or's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I have a '66 E and agree with many, it is a real PITA to open up the bottom of the cowling. I assist with the annuals and still pay a pretty price but I have an IA who is a really good wrench and knows what he is doing around airplanes. I'm happy to pay him knowing I'm also learning from him and getting to know my plane better each year. I may have limited funds but a good mechanic is getting harder to find and keep. Even my IA has lost 3 mechanics to the airlines since they have better pay and benefits. I believe proper care and feeding of your A&P/IA can go a long way toward having a fun and safe plane to fly in. -
Upgraded my panel here’s what came out

Does the 'other' DG have an heading bug for an autopilot? Mine precesses early and often. Any issues with it or the Attitude indicator? -
Beautiful unit! Can it be installed in a older 12V aircraft with a step-up transformer? 12Vdc to 28Vdc?

I'm selling serviceable Slick Magnetos that were removed from my IO-360-A1A (1966 M20E) in good condition. They have approximately 560 hours in each and working correctly when removed. (I "upgraded" to the original Bendix SOS Magnetos). Although currently working well, recommend doing the 500 hour maintenance. Selling them together Model 4345 and Model 4370 and throwing in the Wire Harnesses free of charge. I asking $900 for magnetos, plus shipping.

Best IO-360 A1A oil consumption
BobbyH replied to SLOWR426's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
My IO-360-A1A uses around 1 Quart in 8 hours. It does have a leak that drips on the nose wheel a little so I'm assuming very little is passing the rings. -
Oops, pitot static transponder expires soon
BobbyH replied to M20 Ogler's topic in General Mooney Talk
The early altitude encoders would degrade with time and needed to be adjusted every few years. Since it is a critical component for safe separation of aircraft in IFR conditions it is wise to have it kept accurate. The newer encoders are much more robust and rarely have the same issues, but the rules must include all hardware. -
Yes, Graphicsmaxx made some for me last year. They do an excellent job.

I really like that idea. My time to repaint is coming soon. Thank you!
-
And congrats on your new acquisition. I really enjoy the Mooney and hope you get years of flying in yours! Bob

Stefano, Your bird looks very familiar. Here is a picture of my 66' M20E. Similar yet my colors are swapped, gray and red. The base is white (not bright white). There should be a list of colors in the service manual near the end of the document. You can find it in the downloads section of MooneySpace. Bob

I really like the Bruce's cover on mine, which is also outside because hangars are not available in this area without a multi-year wait. Mine snaps in the front and has a strap underneath the empennage. Options for cowl covers are available, along with wing and tail covers too.

My 66' M20E's paint is not what it used to be so I'm looking at different paint schemes and options. Your "Anomaly" has blown me out of the water and pushed right through the envelope of my imagination. I first saw it on AOPA then here in Mooneyspace and am totally impressed. Probably not what I will do but am encouraged to start thinking outside the box a little more. Thanks to Matt too, amazing job!

I've seen one mounted on the pilot side fuselage, aft of the pilot side air intake above the wing. It looked pretty protected there. It was also low enough to be under the Bruce's cover they had.

Screw size for 1966 M20E wing root trim piece
BobbyH replied to Cessna738's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I love this, great idea. I probably would have been playing two man hit and miss trying to get the tinnermans aligned up on the screws. The aluminum tape will probably protect the tinnermans from some corrosion too. There are probably many places, especially in the interior where this method will be handy. Thanks. -
I love it, great job on the headrests!
-
Scott has the right idea here. When it comes to interior parts, especially in our older planes, I like to maintain both quality and proper materials with burn certs. It has been a few years but with my last plane I layered memory foam (firm on bottom, med, lighter on top) with leather upholstery, all with burn certs. The material was a little more expensive but worth the peace of mind. They made a some very uncomfortable seats into 4 hour seats without having to get up and walking around (as if that were an option). The basic frames are pretty similar. You can custom design your foam and improve both comfort and looks. My M20E seats are next!

Yes EricJ you are correct. I misunderstood your intent was for an elevator with the Hybrid 430018-1 counter balance. The SB is high overkill to ensure these eventually are totally removed from service. Thanks for the clarification. Hate it when that happens.
-
I would like to disagree with your conclusion. SBM20-345A Step 1 - 1.2 clearly identifies that if inspected using method in 1.1 of same Step, "the aircraft may be flown and no further inspections are required for Service Bulletin M20-345A. Record this inspection in Aircraft Log Book." One only needs to remove and re-balance the elevator if weights are replaced. We need to be careful not to read into the SB what it isn't specifically requiring.

False ADS-B traffic targets around Everett WA
BobbyH replied to PT20J's topic in General Mooney Talk
Thanks Skip, that's good to know. Just reading this thread and remembering a number of times, both North and South of Seattle getting the ghosted targets from my own airplane. Although frustrating and concerning a few times, wondering where that plane came from, it wasn't there a minute ago, my anxiety disappears when the target disappears too, knowing it's just "the other me". Appreciate your chasing this down. -
I don't know about the newer models but my 66' E does have a speed limit with gear extended of 120MPH. It is also the maximum extension and retraction speed. Makes it easy to remember just one number.
-
My thoughts exactly. I've been contemplating making a rubber boot for the step to reduce air-flow in the empennage after retraction. Hopefully it will also reduce the dust and stuff that accumulates while taxiing.
