  1. I looked up my invoice. It was $2550 (not $1800). Mid Continent installed the display mod and socket, adjusted the COM squelch, repaired the NAV audio and replaced the lens. Turn around time was 5 days.
  2. I suppose that could explain some of the decisions on this flight. Hopefully we can learn something from it. I'm going to fly the LOC-D and the 17 GPS approach when I have a chance.
  3. I can look mine up if you don't get an answer. I think it was around $1800 with the new display if I remember correctly but it's a great radio and it's cheaper than a new Garmin install. Mid Continent will give you a quote by email; they're very responsive.
  4. Ok I need help. I either have a fundamental knowledge gap or a terminology issue. The LOC-D couldn't be more straight in to 27R. The heading is 269. What am I missing? The procedure turn? Yes it's a dive and I've never liked it but it should be manageable shouldn't it? Better than flying circles behind hills down low in the dark.
  5. Didn't figure it would last more than a few days. I almost called but have never made any decision as quickly as the market requires now. It's crazy. Congrats.
  6. I've concluded after many flights between the same two airports, that my F with all the J mods is a 153 knot airplane (with a 3 blade prop). So... I'll bet with all the speed mods including the cowl and windscreen and a two blade, you could get that or more out of an E. I'm sure someone has done it.
  7. Why not fly the LOC-D to 27R if at night in marginal weather instead of the GPS to 17 if .... if 17 is too short? Curious, when you cross mid field and circle to land on 27R, do aircraft typically circle behind the hills to the East or closer to the airport to the West?
  8. Thanks I didn't look it up. Recall there is a LOC; assumed by now there would be a GPS too.
  9. Very nice. Would like to see panel and interior pics too. Looks like it will sell rather quickly. I'm tempted....
  10. It's good to see everyone else wrestles with their seats too; especially getting the front on the rails. I feel better... again...
  11. I went through several of the covers you mention rather quickly then decided to have a marine upholstery and sail shop make a cover. It's held up great for many years. I'd have to look up when I bought it but it's been a long time. Had to reinforce one area near the baggage door handle but that's it.
  12. So basically it's an exchange for a different engine at a discounted price? Thanks.
  13. If 4100 feet is not enough, why would the pilot have accepted the 17 approach from SOCAL in the first place if he's based at KSEE? Shouldn't he have asked for the LOC or GPS to 27R unless he was trying to expedite getting on the ground (even though the winds favored 17)? Coming from the LA area, 17 is straight in and 27R takes a little more time. Tragic but it seems like bad decisions all around.
  14. I investigated this recently too. It looks like less than 40 were made during or after 1997. An experience broker estimates that less than 10% (older than 1997) have been converted. My conclusion was you've gotta have deep pockets to buy a newer one, get lucky or go with the D mag engine. I'm curious what it takes to convert the D mag engine if you buy one with a run out engine and plan to overhaul. Will Lycoming still do it at a reasonable cost, etc.
  15. The tower didn't seem to hesitate to accept the request to cancel IFR and circle VFR. I guess they have no choice if asked. Circling behind those hills at night in any weather just seems like a fundamentally bad idea even VFR unless it's crystal clear. They appear to have turned up the airport lights to 100% to help the pilots see the airport. For us that aren't pros, we have to ask how two pilots make this mistake. We all think we can do better. It seems so obvious sitting behind a computer but it's not in real time.
  16. Cockpit and ATC audio is sickening. Very sad. Two circle to land crashes within months of each other in San Diego this year. One at MYF and one at SEE. I'm not a professional pilot, but circling to land at KSEE in the dark in weather even if above minimums seems like a non-starter to me.
  17. According to the news, he was coming from one of the airports in your area; four people on board.
  18. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/public-safety/story/2021-12-27/aircraft-reportedly-crashes-near-el-cajon-east-of-gillespie-field I think we have some highly experienced MS participants at KSEE. Looks like he was on approach; high terrain in that area; poor weather. No ILS. Either LOC or GPS. Will be helpful to others to understand root cause.
  19. Unlikely cause but is there any failure mode of an airspeed indicator that could cause it to read faster than actual ? Mixing up knots and mph on your indicator can make a significant difference too down low and slow if you're unfamiliar. You've gotta wonder where the stall warning horn was too or if it was chirping the entire flight.
  20. Checks and balances. There is hope.
  21. Not nearly enough even though the Mooney is in great shape. Retired last Dec and had big plans to fly often. Always something to do right in front of me. Too many hobbies; too many projects to catch up on after 35 years of work. Trips became complicated with COVID, the rental car shortage, the relentless marine layer, and the lack of IFR currency. Trying to make flying a priority again. I feel better now...
  22. I have the same prop/engine combo. If I notice a vibration I don't like, I might make an adjustment on final but don't typically watch the numbers on final or in the pattern. Perhaps I should? Looking forward to other opinions and will pay more attention to the numbers next time I fly. I do have one major issue; my RPM restriction placard is misspelled. :/
  23. A covered spot at my airport out west would be a luxury. Finding a cramped space in a shared hangar for $800 a month or a T hanger is nearly impossible to come by. In SOCAL, canvas covers work fairly well. I've had mine on the ramp for going on 18 years or so. I go through a cover about every five years and keep the plane waxed. But... we don't have a lot of rain nor do we have harsh winters. You do what you've gotta do.
  24. I've had similar thoughts. I'm hesitant to move up from my '67F because I've never had problems finding parts. WIth folks parting out airplanes, it seems like there will be a supply. I'm also considering an Ovation but wonder if parts may be more difficult to find. And regarding the factory, folks comment that the factory is still making parts but I see no evidence of it on their web site. Does anyone know what Mooney is actually doing at the factory? Are they responding to the MSCs and making or identifying parts when needed (even if it takes a while)?
  25. I wouldn't rule out the possibility of RF interference in South Florida. There's a lot of RF stuff going on in South Florida and the Carribean. Agree with not jumping to conclusions. If you do have to overhaul, I just sent mine to Garmin as a flat rate repair. It came back like new.
