Thanks to all that replied, the options are much appreciated. I certainly don't mind paying for this service, but I feel like this increase is just Boeing flexing their market share muscle. I just hate feeling like I'm being taken advantage of.

As ForeFlight is increasing their price 20% and my plan is set to renew in a month I am now looking elsewhere. Just want to see what others are using especially if it's free or at a substantially lower cost. I am not instrument rated and plan to stay VF for the near future, if that makes a difference in a flight planning package. Thanks jb

I came to a Mooney J as a pp with 200 hrs… 30 years prior! I did 5 hours in a C172 (hated it), 2 in a rental M20F, and then hopped in my J. I never felt overwhelmed in the Mooney; behind sometimes but no big deal, I just extended my base until I caught up. The Mooney is much more stable on approach which allowed me to concentrate on my speed, drift, gear check, etc. Much easier for me than bouncing around at 65k in a 172. As for a 3 hr commute. I would much rather drive to the airport, pull and preflight the plane, fly and reverse the process than drive for 3 hrs straight. Driving sucks. Has I-85 ever improved!? For the east coast flying, especially for a newer pilot, I believe a M20J is a fantastic traveling platform. Buy one and fly it for 2 years as you build time and obtain your instrument rating, then look for a long body with turbo, fiki etc. if you so desire. Or…. if you are going to be carrying 4 people a bunch. Prolly a C182 ain’t a bad way to go for you at this point either. Good luck, and enjoy the adventure, jb

I wonder if the large would fit me.. Get the bluetooth model and put them over my Halo's. Could work. And I think I'd be rather fetching as well!

Low time pilot - intimidated by Mooney
Jocbay replied to 40_Year_Dream's topic in General Mooney Talk
I bought a J after 30 years off, I’m 66, and only having a couple hundred hours then. I flew a 172 for 8 hours and got comfortable flying, but my landing weren’t anything to write home about. I moved to the Mooney an found that once I got my checklists dialed-in it wasn’t long before managing a complex plane wasn’t hard. I also found it easier to land than the Cessna because it is more stable in decent and has more solid feeling controls. On landings I f I came in too fast (even 5 knots) I would float along often ballooning or maybe catching a gust and then having to deal with that, sometimes more successfully than others. A stable decent at the correct speed sets up a pretty easy landing. Perhaps not a perfect one at first; but one you won’t be ashamed of. You have a lot more recent experience than I; use your checklists, hit your speed on final, check the gear 3 times and you’ll be fine. jb -
So what was the install like. Time and cost, if you don’t mind me asking.

What, no pic?

Wow, that’s a lot of wrench swinging there!

Panel Upgrade Complete | Gi275's | Full Parts breakout>>
Jocbay replied to Teddsgotwings's topic in General Mooney Talk
What serial # is yours? I’ve got a 78j number 0606. I just did my first panel upgrade (jpi 900, gnc 255 and a uavonics av 30). The next one next year will be like yours, 2 gi275, gnx375, and finally a gfc500 (I’ve got a century 1 wing leveler). I’d love to hear how you like your setup as you fly it a bit. Especially how easily it is to enter flight plans into the 375, make changes and such. Your setup sure looks sweet. I know you’ll enjoy it! jb oh, and nice hangar!! -
How about an Acclaim with a turbo diesel. That would one up Cirrus. Not that that would actually happen. I’m afraid the best we can hope for at this point is that someone will buy Mooney (for pennies on the dollar) and turn it into a parts company. Perhaps someone with that kind of experience. Univair? Of course many have predicted the demise of Mooney many times before, but with great exaggeration.

AGL... above ground level?

I just replaced one through Lasar. My gear actuator assembly was in for service. A quick .875 amu. It was already apart so I had them replace it. Don’t know if it was warranted or not; but it was the ole “ well while you are in there, might as well”. They sent the original back, so if you can’t find one and have any interest, pm me.

I’d like to repaint mine as well. A po used some kind of solvent on it and turned it a cloudy whiteish. Anyone know of a good paint that sticks to plastic? I’ve got my interior out (started with just wanting to remove the pilot shoulder harness for repair and quickly got out of hand) so I could spray, but would rather brush.

Mark, I don’t know how I missed this one. I’ll call tomorrow. Thanks

I have been using, on a temporary basis, white gorilla tape. I cut the patches in oval or circular patterns so there is no corner to to start pealing. Man that stuff sticks well! I'm not a fan of those nickel plated plugs. I've seen too many rusty ones. Rubber grommet plugs (perhaps with a bit o silicone sealant) should work, but I really don't want a bunch of black dots on my plane. +1 for the flush patches; but until I can find someone to make them, I'm sticking with gorilla tape. rr

Nope, no record of service on the unit.

Pulled this bundle of joy today. Took me and my mechanic about 2 1/2 hrs to get it out. An offset 5/8” open end wrench (which we didn’t have) would make it go much faster. Now it’s off to Lasar. Gear swings with no binding so I guess I’m making progress.

I’m using a mini iPad mounted vertically. I removed the medallion bent a piece of 24 ga sheet metal and put in a longer screw with a wing nut on the bottom. I’m using a Steelie ball mount and really like it. Works with my iPhone as well.

I plan on replacing them now as I’ve got the panel open.

There is a spline inside the conical part with the cap on it anyone know it’s purpose? im guessing the no back spring is original.

Most appreciated a64. Upon further inspection, we believe the cable or the clutch is bound. The t handle is tight and will not move even a fraction of an inch. As u might guess the whole clutch assembly has very tight access. We are off to do some research. Laser was recommended as an info source, but of course it’s Saturday. Here’s a pic if the gear assembly. I believe we will be dealing with everything aft of the silver colored gear motor.
