78 J model. Last week in the pattern. I lowered the gear and the the gear down light on the floor didn’t illuminate. The circuit breakers for both the gear actor and gear down light were popped. Ammeter showed normal. I followed the emergency gear down procedure and was only able to move the t-handle 6”. Long story short, after several low passes, the gear was confirmed down and I landed without incident. We have it up on jacks and get this. Both circuit breakers in, and gear won’t raise. Don’t hear the gear motor. Gear safety bypass light and horn come on when we put the gear handle up. When we push the gear safety bypass button it trips the 15 amp gear actuator cb. A&P and I are hoping for help from the ms brain trust. Thanks

Oil or fuel. I'm ordering a JPI 900 engine monitor and the choices are 7/16" or 3/8". I can't get hold of my mechanic and a search turned up nada. Anyone know?

I get this out of either tank routinely, also a few specs in the gas collator. I pull the gas collator on each tank before the first flight and after fueling. I haven’t inspected the screen yet and don’t know when or if has ever been done. I plan to look at it next week. Engine runs fine (so far). Any thoughts?

Vetter Aviation on HLN has a 77 F they rent. I remember it being very reasonable, but don’t remember the exact number. $200 wet?

Raw EGT numbers. Why they do matter....sometimes.

I just want to thank all of y’all for sharing your knowledge. I am new to all of this (and it’s a lot) so I’m reading constantly. I don’t always understand everything, especially on the electronics, but the more I read the more I get. I just wanted y’all to know. Thanks. jb -
As I will be VFR for the next couple of years; I was hoping to fly with this panel for a year and then install everything at once; however, with instruments dying faster than Custer's 7th, I must now do this upgrade in two parts. Here's what doesn't work: AI, Narco 1200, Radar Altimeter, Century 1 AP, GS on top NavCom, Clock, and Timer and PC. Here's what I don't trust: Garmin 250xl GPS (reacquires constantly), 250xl comm (last control tower said I was broken) DME, and oil temp gauge. Soo, Part one: JPI 900 (with Cies fuel senders) mounted vertically below the gear switch. AV 30 as my AI (can it also act as primary for my turn and bank?) GTR 225 replaces the Narco 1200 and intercom. ForeFlight and Sentry ADSB in with a mini Ipad mounted on the yoke. Part two: GNX 375 (maybe GTN 650xi) GI 275 GFC 500 PMA audio panel Part one will get me legal and safe without cutting up the panel and part two will get me what I want. I'll redo the panel at that time. So I have several questions. Does this plan sound reasonable? Any alternatives I should consider? Should I look into getting the PC fixed or just hand fly until part deux, (hopefully next summer). And lastly, as Oshkosh is upon us, where should I look for some avionics deals. Thanks for reading and any input you may have. Happy Fourth! jb

My new (1978) Mooney!! I'm pretty excited. Will start transition training next. There is sooo much to do; if you think of it all at once, it's overwhelming. You just have to take it one step at a time. Lucky for me, I've got a good instructor, plenty of desire and a great recourse here! Oh, and also a whole lot o money (I print it in my basement). I think I'm going to need a bigger press! Ha Thanks to all that helped me with the purchase. P.S. Many more questions to follow.

Once a plane, and thus all it's parts, are certified; how much more expensive is it to produce those parts than the same "uncertified" parts. I see@Jeph357post on the G5 and am wondering how much of the increase is FAA paperwork and how much is "'caus they can"? I'm betting the units are the same save for some software differences. Then there's the liability issue. Can't you build a company that has no assets and thus effectively sheds it's liability? Morals not withstanding. Idk, just a thought. Seems if the planes are already certified, and much simpler to build than an SUV; you ought to get one out the door for a couple hundred amus. By the way, I'd be building M20Js if I were in the Mooney biz.

The best thing I can say about this group is not on-line wisdom, but the friends you will meet in person. Crazy i know, but these in folks are even better (if not better lookin) in person than online. Accepting me perhaps, but who am i to say. IDK, but that's about most things. -
for our Mooney's to be airworthy? If not so, are there those that fly without one? Would make ingress and egress easier and open up access and the view to that part of the panel. Though in an emergency it might hamper the efforts of a passenger pilot... abit. No real plans to do so, the question just happened to pop into my noggin today.

Welcome. I'm also a new owner, early J model, and have a legacy panel that I will be upgrading in the near(ish) future. I see you have gutted the panel. What are your plans for all that cash and more importantly, how have you decided on what to install? Good luck finishing up your ppl and with the panel upgrade. jb
