I got that on my phone (mobile) but Wi-Fi is ok here… -Don

True, it took 3 weeks from finding the spalling to IRAN. The engine is going on the plane now. Everything was checked but only what needed was replaced. Cylinders were my idea as I was putting in new cam, DLC lifters, lifter plungers, pushrods as needed, new rod bolts, nuts, gaskets, intake tube hoses, bearings. ~800 hours ago, it was pulled for a gear up - case, crank were certified and line bored. New prop, OH governor, Cam and lifters certified too but that didn’t stop the spalling. The owner @ that timed decided to not overhaul or replace the cylinders - that was the only thing keeping it from being a full overhaul then. Lots done since then. I Didn’t want to wait 5 to 6 months. I know what is in the engine now, and it was running great before the spalling. Seems the right option… Edit: oh, and it has ~2200 hrs since factory rebuild/major, ~4100 hrs since ‘new’ -Don

3 lobes on the cam spalled (lifters too), and 2 spalled where the cam rides in the case - glad this was caught early. Prior to the cylinder IRAN first time, no metal to speak of. Metal just started getting higher as time went on after that. Just wondering how it spalled the ‘bearing’ surface of the cam… -Don

That baffling LOOKS damn nice too! -Don

Making progress! Have pics of the cam, this one spalled where the cam rides the case! There has to be something about grinding these particular cams after initial use vs the older 60’s versions. Why would a cam spall where it rides in the case? No lifter to cause this and no evidence of corrosion on the cam… DLC won’t fix that! Hum….

6 months vs ~3 weeks — I had most of the parts, thankfully. So much is new/replaced or recently overhauled- I’m very hopeful on her running well and breaking in quickly. While not a full overhaul, the repair is about as close as one can get… Prop and governor was IRAN’d/resealed by Byams too a couple of years back.… Mag overhauled, SureFly, exhaust overhauled by Dawley before he retired. Fingers crossed. -Don

And have lots of Monopoly Money ;o) -Don -

Yep, posting etc was not working… -Don

Had to order shorter pushrods. Seems new cam and the Millennium Cylinders may cause tighter tolerances. Seems the shop is getting closer! -Don

Heavy & Difficult Manual Gear Operation on M-20C

Get the gear up before 80 mph or do the mooney dip. Down @ or below 120 mph. Mine works pretty well. Also a bent jbar can make it hard work or something caught in the bar area. Down block can also be egg shaped… -

Nose Gear Door Linkage Replacement
hammdo replied to Samir13k's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Heim ends should be all you need to replace. Make note of spacers and washers on the rod ends! top heim is F34-14, bottom is F34-14N in the parts book. Very likely right and left had threads.. item 29 and 32 in pics -Don -
No corrosion found. We checked the cam and lifters last year and nothing on them. My guess is these 4 just failed recently. I fly pretty much weekly, change the oils ~4 times a year so it’s not from that. -Don

Here is a pic of the different types - original, DLC (Diamond Like Carbon), Rollers: -Don
-
Those are the original ones from 1996 when it was a Lycoming factory overhaul. I looked at them and they are not DLC lifters. I also looked at the last IRAN (in 2006 from gear up) and they resurfaced those lifters/cam followers. When I got the DLC lifters, you could tell the difference. My guess those are just dark from use. The faces are very light color vs the DLC one which are very dark/black faces. -Don

I thought I posted but, Edge Aviation (2F7) in Commerce does mine. Brad is the contact. I’m also hangered at Mesquite… my plane is there now… -Don

IFR certification for M20J Dallas area

Edge Aviation in Commerce (2F7) - they don’t travel. They do mine. ~$350-$500, Ask for Brad. Mine is there now for annual, IFR cert, and engine IRAN (spalled lifters/cam). I’m also hangered at Mesquite… -Don -
What they found on tear down: Spalled lifters happen in the last 60 hours. Last year when we did the #4 cylinder, we saw nothing on the faces/cam. 821 hours since the last IRAN - this is the current condition. Basically, No NDI (non destructive inspection), and no crank polish/line boring will be done. -Don

Tear down completed. Crank good, gonna freshen it up with new bearings, rod bolts, lifter plungers, 1 pushrod need’s replacing. Lower mount bushings need replacement. Goes to show things can happen even when maintenance is constantly being done. We talked about doing the full OH but 3 to 6 months out and she won’t be hangered. I think just doing the IRAN is best for now. It will be as fresh as one can get. -Don
