  1. That may well be the case. I know next to nothing about the details of avionics installations, but you would think output to an autopilot would be a separate connection issue than input from nav/gps sources.
  2. An update on my install: Still waiting on parts from Garmin as well. Were supposed to arrive last week, but no sign of them, and no indication when they will ship. You would think since this is an existing product, they would have stock available. I'm also discovering some rather nasty surprises Garmin has built in. If you are using a non-garmin autopilot, you can only connect 1 (one) nav source to the G3x. I'm installing a GNX375 and an SL-30, but with this latest twist, won't be able to connect the SL-30 in any way shape or form to the G3X, due to a connection with the STEC-30 that's in the plane. Sooo, after all this, I'll still need a separate CDI indicator for the nav radio. Makes absolutely no sense. I'm wondering if this isn't a dirty trick to push you toward the GFC500. Needless to say, I'm not a happy camper.

  4. The kln 89b can be used for ifr as you indicate, But only if the installation was ifr approved. Mine is strictly vfr only. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. My current panel is straight out of 1992. Kx170b's, stock engine gauges, no engine monitor, no gps (well, a kln89, but that hardly counts!). I was going to go with dual g5's, edm 900, gtn 650, gtx 345, but with the recent offerings by garmin, a g3x touch with a g5 backup and a gnx375, plus a couple of used sl30's actually ended up being cheaper. My panel is in bad physical condition, so I'm going with a whole new unit, powder coated. I have an STEC 30, and am quite happy with it having flown a lot of ifr by hand and with only a wing leveler. Looking forward to GPSS. If I can't handle the glide slope on my own, maybe I shouldnt be flying ifr! I bought the plane last year, and had included this upgrade in the budget. The factory engine gauges are starting to go wonky, and the EIS option on the g3x is pretty comprehensive, and cheaper overall than the edm.   10. I was just at Billy Bishop over New Years. Pricey, but worth it, especially if you approach at dusk, along the shoreline with the city lights and CN tower to your right. STOLport is cheaper, but they are in the middle of renovating their facilities, (at least they were in January). Might be done by the time you go. I wouldn't sweat the radio station license, but do be sure you phone ahead to alert customs both arriving into Canada and returning to the US. Usually, on the Canadian end, they ask you to call when you land, then ask some simple questions, give you a code to write down, and welcome you to Canada, with no inspection or interview. Not the case on returning to the US. Tom

  16. My recently purchased j had a prop strike last year, with a full tear down inspection. Crank was found to be OK, but cam was reground. I would not have purchased without the teardown. As stated above, the risk is the introduction of cracks that can grow over time due to fatigue until a brittle fracture occurs during flight. For those who think a tear down is not required, ask yourself what rate of failure due to an uninspected strike would be acceptable to you, 1:30? 1:60? 1:100? If you find 100 pilots still flying behind an uninspected crank after a strike, does that really tell you anything useful? Tom Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  18. Cost is on their website; I think there's an upcharge for leather ($500 or $1000, can't remember). It was about $3,500 all-in, including carpets and side panels and various trimmings. Took about 1.5 hours for the first seat, less for the second. Depends on how much old glue you feel like you need to scrape off. Back seat about the same. Was actually sort of fun.   20. I'm redoing my recently acquired J using Airtex. Have the carpets, sidepanels, and seats done; just need to repaint the plastic interior panels, and redo the armrests and "highlight" vinyl. They are great to work with. Can be a bit "businesslike" when you call to order, but if you have any questions about the install, they will walk you through it. You will get a link to a webpage showing the installation steps; not exactly instructions, but pretty much all you need. See pics for before and after. I'm very pleased. As someone else posted (I think), you get 90% of a custom job for less than 50% of the cost. Tom
  21. I just got done installing some new interior trim pieces, and had the exact same symptoms when I moved the yoke afterwards. I'm thinking it might be the plastic piece between the floor and the wall, under the door and alongside the seat rail. The existing screws were quite stubby, and I used new screws which were a bit longer. I'm having a hard time believing that this could cause interference with the aileron tube, but will pull the piece to see. Amazing that someone else has the same problem on the same day (more or less). Tom

  24. Yes, I don't like landing and only being able to use the right brakes! Mechanic said guides were clean and not binding. I get the feeling these are not very complicated systems, so this should be a simple fix.
  25. Sounds like that's going to be the next steps.
