IFR “practice” with certificate vs without. Good idea or Bad?
Schllc replied to Schllc's topic in General Mooney Talk
Never said anything about filing or flying approaches. that was absolutely not the question the intent was practice using instruments to prepare for inadvertent IMC. the purpose is safety and life saving. -
Buying a Ovation or Bravo with G1000 Non WAAS?
Schllc replied to Fix's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
You are correct that you cannot purchase the upgrade new any longer, but there are always salvage boxes from other aircraft, and Garmin gives full service for any repairs. I have upgraded three non waas Mooney, two ovations and an acclaim and I had to look and wait a month or two at the longest to find the parts. With the supply chain the way it is that’s probably quicker than anything new! In addition, finding the gia63w’s myself saved me over 10k each time. -
Buying a Ovation or Bravo with G1000 Non WAAS?
Schllc replied to Fix's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I am a big fan of the g1000., and I have never met a single person who owned one and said they wish they had something else. I suppose if I felt like the equipment was deficient I would agree with those who think it’s limiting, or I felt like it didn’t have everything required for safe operation. While it isn’t a new touch screen it is extremely robust and complete, and with flight level change and nearest you also have the precursor to “autoglide”. I guess I just disagree with those who think it detracts from the value of the plane, but to each their own. -
Buying a Ovation or Bravo with G1000 Non WAAS?
Schllc replied to Fix's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
The g1000nxi is already certified in the ultra so the logical and economical step is for them to clear that path. Just like Cessna, and beech have done. if Mooney closes for good it will happen because garmin can do it, and there are enough planes out there to make it worth the expense. Or Mooney can do it which they have shown zero appetite for in spite of what they could earn there has been speculation that they still owe Garmin money so that may be the hurdle. It will happen eventually. -
IFR “practice” with certificate vs without. Good idea or Bad?

That’s fair, I could have said practice instead for the purpose of clarity, and to avoid nitpicking. (topic has been edited) -
IFR “practice” with certificate vs without. Good idea or Bad?

I don’t see a conflict with the rule and what I said. I suggested flying with s friend in simulated instrument conditions. Did you think I meant flying in actual imc? -
IFR “practice” with certificate vs without. Good idea or Bad?
Schllc replied to Schllc's topic in General Mooney Talk
You realize that’s exactly what a safety pilot is right? They are not required to be an instructor and we have almost all done if for someone at some point. My “intention” when I thought about this, was to save his life if he found himself in inadvertent IMC, not to embolden him to make a bad decision. Such is the quandary, and the root of the question. -
IFR “practice” with certificate vs without. Good idea or Bad?

I watched this documentary on JUUL the e-cigarette maker, and what struck me was how far off intent their mission went, and the deleterious effects. Some people really found a way to quit smoking using the product, but an enormous amount of children started using, which was not the impetus behind the invention. Point being, do you provide the information to those who would respect it and use it properly, as in an inadvertent entry into imc, to prevent hurting themselves, knowing that some would simply use it to abuse the privilege. Obviously getting the ticket and maintaining currency is ideal, part of me thinks it should be part of a ppl, but that would be a pretty hotly debated topic..... -
Donations to Mooneyspace - Getting Supporter Status

Yeah. Saw it right after I sent the qu -
On the heels of that painful atc conversation with the pilot who was struggling… I don’t mean to bash the guy, just analyzing what I heard it’s hard to believe they were fresh a ticket holder, not only did he sound lost but that flight path and inability to even conform to a vector was inexcusable It made me think about a friend of mine that is cautious and has good self limits. He will not likely ever get his IFR, nor own a plane. He would never illegally file IFR, but may very well find himself in unanticipated IMC. My first thought was to do some actual IFR training with foggles and hood time. Make him feel the spacial disorientation and how easily it can happen, as well as what to do if you think it is happening. Sounds practical on its face, but then made me wonder if familiarizing people to this extent, would make them more risk prone out of perhaps confidence, or safer due to understanding of the consequences. I wanted to take a poll and hear the brain trusts thoughts. Is it better to do it to protect all of the cautious among us, or deign to the more risk prone?

Prop Strike and Engine tear down requirements.

Prop Strike and Engine tear down requirements.
Schllc replied to Schllc's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I tend to agree, I think I’m very dubious of continental saying it isn’t necessary. -
Prop Strike and Engine tear down requirements.
Schllc replied to Schllc's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
This seems ambiguous in a SB…. ”Following any propeller strike, complete disassembly and inspection of all rotating engine components is mandatory and must be accomplished prior to further flight. Inspect all engine driven accessories in accordance with the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.” Is it mandatory or not? -
My understanding was that both lycoming and continental have an AD that any prop strike requires an engine tear down. I was looking at a plane for a friend today, the broker said there was a partial nose gear collapse on taxi eleven years ago. He told me continental “reviewed the incident, and decided no inspection was required”. But they changed the prop due to damage from sudden stoppage. This does not sound right at all… Has anyone ever heard of this? Did I misunderstand the AD?

I think it’s regard to raw dollars you are correct, but given that aviation is a discretionary cost, there are a lot of other factors that really should be considered, at least I believe so for my choice. Convenience, being able to fly when I wanted to, not when a flight school plane was available. Proficiency, I firmly believe that the plane you spend the most time in, will be what you are inevitably most proficient. I did not want to spend 200+ hours in a 172 only to have to transition to my real forever plane. Want, since this is discretionary, why would one settle? I think it’s important to really love your plane. If you do you will not resent the expense to maintain to a high standard, and since you don’t need it you get to decide. Mission, my mission is about 600 miles, a slow plane was not an option. We rented a 172 to go look at a commander years ago. The plane was a three hour drive, so we decided to fly. With a 40knt headwind it took us over two hours to fly there. That made my decision to get a Mooney that day. Reducing a passionate hobby to money alone is a reverse rationalization of “I’ll save money traveling by buying a plane”. Truth is, if you find yourself at either extreme, you’ve gone too far! You only live once, get what you want!

When I started looking for my first plane to finish my ppl I thought cheap, something I would write the check for and set a budget of 80k. A month later I spent three times that and got a gx ovation 3. Two reasons for the big change…. 1, I owed it to myself and my family to get the newest and safest platform I could afford, so the budget limitation was not rational. I had to finance, but was ok with that route too, 2, it’s like buying an old used car for 10k to own it and 10k a year repairing it, or you can spend 40k to finance a new one. one will be down a lot, and a lot of inconvenience, and one you get in and go. I had a friend that was aligned with me on the cheap plane and we considered partnering. It dissolved when he bought a 1973 172 We bought our planes within a month of each other, his was due for annual six months later, and mind was due eight months later. His annual was over 22k and took three months , mine was just over 4k, and took a little under three weeks After almost nine years of ownership, aside from annuals a magneto, a turbo, and a few minor non airworthy items, I have only missed one planned flight because of maintenance. buy old and cheap and whip into shape yourself, or buy newer and fly. I think at the end of the day, the tangibles and intangibles more or less even out, just which path do you prefer. I wanted to fly often

Wow, that was painful to listen to…

IFR equipment and capability
Schllc replied to Brandt's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
Maybe in general you are correct, but in my case I went directly from the ppl checkride into ifr training and it took me a good bit longer than the average bear because I was such a new pilot. It was about three months of flying close to 150 hours into my ifr check ride, followed by another 200 hours of all weather commuting so in my case it was absolutely true. I mostly avoid planning to land into known low ifr conditions so I try to do ipc’s every six months. I always feel like I need improvement … -

Could be a newbie ifr but I have to say, the few months after I got my ticket is probably the most proficient I have ever been... -
Is It Me or Did Something New Start Today?
Schllc replied to cliffy's topic in Bug Reports & Suggestions
Perhaps viewing it as a resource rather than just a social site, would frame MS in a different perspective. The minimum is $10 to remove ads, you donate something for the effort and expense it takes to keep the site active. It would appear that it is well worth the money to most others of the regulars. If donating a few bucks is too burdensome for all the benefit the site provides to owners and to avoid the ads, then visiting isn’t required. -
I think this borders on blasphemy.

I cant speak to hotels because I don't use them enough to worry about points, but i have been a delta SkyMiles member for over 20 years and the majority of my miles are from purchases that I make with my business card. I have almost 2 million miles and have been platinum for several years. I used to take a combination of actual miles flown as well as purchases but that seems to have changed. The miles are nearly worthless now, 8 years ago when my wife and I took a trip to Europe, first class tickets were 150,000 miles and nearly all flights were open to the redemption. Today they are 600,000 and severely limited options for when they can be used. I will be switching to a cashback card as well. Even with all of that loyalty and spending between 250-500k a year for over 20 years i still cant go to the SkyMiles lounge, never get upgrades and now there are harsh limits for redemptions. basically it now sucks.

When I started flying regularly I tried both of them for about a year. I use ForeFlight and like it better. but…. I don’t believe it is better, just equally different. my log is in FF and I know it well so I wouldn’t want to switch for any reason. if you have that comfort with Garmin, I see no reason to switch. I didnt find there to be a distinguishable difference in function or ease of use, with I think one exception, If you use a flight stream to update your databases must use Garmin pilot for at least that. if you do it the old way by taking cards to a computer you can use either.

Best advice you could ever get.
