  1. It doesn't really matter what the FAR says about uncontrolled fields. No on there will pay attention to this, and they will continue to do whatever they want. i was practicing landings at an uncontrolled field and i had two people in the pattern with radios not talking at all, one guy calling a straight in from 20 miles out not answering anyone, one guy doing a run up on the runway on the tailwind side, one guy lined up and waiting on the correct runway, and another guy taking off with an intersection departure, also not talking. good luck with "rules" there!
  2. I completely understand your point. good, fast, cheap…….. pick two. no better option than good referrals and they probably come out well for the most part. It’s most important to align expectations. There can be no assumptions. Caveat emptor
  3. Very true, however, if it looks like crap when it’s brand new, it ain’t getting any better!
  4. My takeaway from this discussion is that there are good arguments for moth methods, and it comes down to personal risk management. I prefer to not touch the fuel selectors prior to takeoff, but I understand why some believe this induces more risk, I just happen to disagree. Not to the point I care to debate, it’s just my personal opinion. To each their own. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah
  5. I’m not too far from you and would be happy to meet next time I’m in Venice and help you out if you would like….
  6. I live in South Florida too, where are you based? If I get over to you I can help you in person.
  7. This only works where a “fuel farm “ is allowed. This is getting harder and harder as well, bc airports want the markup on fuel. it is VERY difficult to get a new one approved at my home drome, and even when you do, the airport charges $1.50 flow charge per gallon.
  8. Mechanical should happen before marketing to show a buyer you keep up with the service. doing upgrades like interior will likely make it sell quicker, but will not likely pay for the cost in increased price. best to just price appropriately and let the buyer use their tastes and discretion for cosmetic stuff. selling quicker does save money, just depends on your timeframe, ability to carry two planes if you want to buy now… good luck!
  9. It wasn’t an interior. I still need that done! it was a full Avionics’s upgrade, landing gear overhaul, some other upgrades and an annual. I was NOT happy with the delay, but not much you can do once it’s in pieces somewhere. it was definitely a learning experience. I had the engines pickled btw, I had another plane to fly, and ground only insurance was only 1800. And I had my hangar subletted, not a problem at an airport with a five year wait list. my point was any major work done by me in the future will be done close enough for me to put eyes on the plane and the people regularly. PS. This was not for a Mooney either, it was for my Aerostar. But the principle applies to any major work on any airplane.
  10. Your question has been answered several times already but it may be a bit broken so hopefully this helps. you cannot download the flight data without version .34 or higher. if you want to update your data you can do it with just the two main cards but it’s easier with four cards. the two Garmin cards get all but nav data which goes on the top cards. put all four cards in, boot up. Done. if you want data logging you may need to update your software. it will cost about 1000 for the software to update to the latest and between 2-10 hours depending on who does it…
  11. If I had the time it takes to get in and finish it I would, but that isn’t my situation, not yet anyway… I have done only one major project in aviation but I can promise you it applies to all of them… Hector was the exception in that he was proven, most other shops don’t have the reputation and are really poor with communication, but decent to great at their craft. I would suggest, if at all possible, if you have to use a new to you guy, make sure the shop is close enough for you to visit once or twice a week. This simple part of the process will apply appropriate pressure on the vendor as well as allow the owner to see things as the develop. There are myriad details you can’t even think of that require small and large decisions. The vendor will make a lot of these decisions without consulting, which isn’t always wrong, but given the options you may have chosen differently. Being close and viewing regularly can mitigate these items, and reduce the vendor excuses. Both of these things will expedite the completion which is a win win. maybe I’m just really particular but my experience quoted 3-4 months and took 15 months I was 1,000 miles away which wasn’t really convenient to check on, even in my own plane. I don’t have bad things to say about the shop, I just had unrealistic expectations given the circumstances I will go back to the shop again, but know what to go there for and what to stay away if I’m not open to their method I have the referral that was posted here, but would like another one based in southwest fl
  12. That’s my point. The little guys that interface with us have no power, and make no determinations. They are just fee collectors. The underwriters wage a war of attrition with everyone else. Their sole objective is to pay as close to nothing as possible. They will often spend well beyond the cost of the claim fighting a claim. It is a twisted broken industry. Most of this was accomplished by onerous regulation, and the rest is just the business model.
  13. For frivolous or marginal lawsuits the ambulance chasers will absolutely drop the lower limits like a hot potato. higher limits, higher net worth, or an airtight case of negligence is not so easy. just remember, your insurance is not your friend either way. Their only mission is to pay as little as possible in every instance.
  14. You mean instead of 150k per person and 1 million per occurrence, it would be 1 mil per person and 1mil per occurrence?
  15. What does smooth mean?
  16. You cannot upgrade to the latest version/versions without waas. Its either .34 or .37. you would need .37 to be able to toggle between Adsb weather or xm, otherwise you have to select one or the other on setup and that’s all you have.
  17. Data logging is not available for older software versions.
  18. 1,000,000/150,000
  19. Old republic. it doesn’t bother me because I do them every six months anyway.
  20. Can’t speak to the cost of an MU2, but I can tell you with certainty it is less than any TBM, and considerably. My best friend has owned a TBM for about five years now, last years annual was 470k. This was obviously not typical, it was timed out items. This isn't even possible on an Aerostar. His average annual expense to own the plane was north of 200k for about 175 hours. This was everything except fuel. The Aerostar operation expense may be similar to a Meridian, but a TBM is not comparable, and I’d bet money neither is an MU2. I’m not deluding myself about the costs to own and operate an Aerostar, but I’m into my second year, and I can assure you it will not be in the realm of 200k a year.
  21. All of my totalizers with the g1000 have been within .3 gallons at worst and .1 gallon at best. This was verified to my satisfaction by fueling myself at the same airport, same pump and same position on the ramp. my tanks say 51 gallons, but you can easily put another 2 (maybe more) gallons per side past that with patience. if you have monroy tanks, the only way you will ever know how much you really have is when you fill up. That’s the downside to monroy’s, the upside is you almost always have more than you need!
  22. You have officially joined the ranks of the dribblers. welcome!
  23. Ya, you have the nxi. The 510 cross fills, that isn’t compatible with the legacy g1000 the DB concierge didn’t work well for me at all in my ultra. I still brought the 510 back home for updates.
  24. Only software versions .34 and up record data. I also believe to upgrade to .34 you need waas, but I may be mistaken and .37 is the one that requires waas. Bottom cards and one top card is required. The top card is nav data, the bottom two are the remainder of the DB. The nav data card does not need to stay in the g1000. But both displays have to be updated with the data at each cycle. Top and bottom.
  25. The compensation the bank gets is favorable lease terms from the owner. If it wasn’t a better deal than owning and building they wouldn’t agree to the terms. the airport, at least here, doesn’t offer anything I’d consider favorable. A 25 year lease on a half acre parcel is about a million dollars up front, and 5k monthly. your improvements are diminished year over year due to the expiring lease term which cannot be guaranteed renewable.
