I think there’s some truth to what he said. If I say something incredibly stupid and misinformed I’d much rather have someone say “That’s incredibly stupid and here’s why…” then to ignore it or talk about how everyone gets an opinion and they all all equally valid and blah blah blah. Especially if it’s a situation where my ignorance might hurt me or someone else. Sure, there are people that can correct knowledge deficits, misunderstandings and misinformation without using any strong statements or language but those are few and far between. Personally, I don’t make any money off this site so people can either take or leave what I have to say. My assumption is that if they really don’t like what I have to say they will ignore me and if they appreciate what I have to say they will let me know. I don’t have the time or desire to throughly edit my posts to make sure no one could possibly take offense at what I say. Maybe that comes from my job. I usually try to be incredibly kind, emphatic and caring but occasionally when someone says or does something incredibly stupid that is hurting themselves or someone else I can be very blunt in letting them know. Sometimes anything less than that falls on deaf ears. -

Some people have started topics, seen them go in a different direction than intended and then deleted them. I think it’s important not to take anything you or anyone else posts on an Internet forum too seriously. If you would be devastated if someone erased what your posted why not save a copy for yourself? Personally, I don’t think it’s a bad idea to let people end conversations that, in retrospect they wish they hadn’t started. -

Don’t see why you would need one while you’re sleeping. For the record, I think flying with a CPAP machine is a horrible idea. Unless you’re a passenger. And have sleep apnea. And are sleeping. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a concentrator, but with my Mountain High O2D2 up front and O2D1 in back and flying 1-2 times a week (unless there’s a miniature oil rig blocking the taxi lane) my tank lasts a whole year. If I didn’t have a built-in tank the oxygen concentrator would be very appealing. Might be nice if you worked as a ferry pilot as well. -
I think that’s a pretty universal sentiment when someone makes decisions you disagree with. One of the things I’ve noticed in my adult life is that people are absolutely horrible at choosing between two unappealing choices and will often choose the one counterproductive to their long term interests. I think the last couple of years have been filled with multiple crappy choices and I can’t reasonably claim that if I had been in charge I would have done a better job.

I’m glad you were able to resolve your issues amicably without resorting to embarrassing public attacks on the forum. It was actually a Business Law class as part of an MBA program but I forgive you for your misrepresentations since you’ve already shown us that facts and rational arguments aren’t your forte. I’m glad you have accomplished your goals and will be moving on. -
Drug companies still give out free samples and you can rest assured that there is excellent accounting. When I was a medical student my family medicine preceptor worked closely with one of the drug reps. One day he told me clinic was cancelled and we were going to drive around with the drug rep and visit various practices because the rep wasn’t allowed to talk about “off label” uses of a drug, but he was. The rep has listings of EVERY provider at every practice, which drugs they prescribed (their drugs or their competitor’s) and other statistics about each prescriber as well as a strategy for how to motivate the “stragglers.” Fortunately, in my field we don’t really have to deal with them as they don’t waste their efforts on people who prescribe drugs with zero refills. Although I do miss my Levitra pen.

@Frank B., I’m not an attorney so I had to look this stuff up: slan·der /ˈslandər/ noun LAW the action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person's reputation. I did take a business law class one time and I think they said that as long as the statements you make are TRUE then it’s not slander. Historically, the people I’ve met who throw that word around have tended to not be the victims of slander but instead seem to be suffering from a narcissistic injury and they throw that word around to make themselves seem like they’ve been horribly wronged when in fact the opposite is often true. The statement “I didn’t attack X” shortly followed by several attacks on “X” doesn’t sit well with me either. I’m certainly not @LANCECASPER’s “keeper/house mom” (whatever that is) and he’s certainly capable of defending himself, but when I see truly bizarre behavior coming from someone I don’t know attacking someone I do then I sometimes comment on it. I think if someone had helped me out in the past and publicly disagreed with something I said then maybe I would try contacting them privately instead of throwing a bunch of wild accusations at them just because they disagree with me. That would almost border on slander… -

Frank, I don’t know you very well but I’ve read @LANCECASPER’s posts for years and he has personally helped me more than once. He had always shown me to be a man of integrity and respect. I have to admit, I’m not getting the same vibe from you. We get you’re upset and on an internet-wide smear campaign to show them you’re not someone to be messed with. Sometimes though things can go a little too far. When you start attacking well respected members of this forum and then play the victim any credibility you may have once had goes out the window and you come across as a narcissist who thinks he should get special treatment and throws a tantrum when that doesn’t happen. Not a good look. Avidyne doesn’t owe you anything. You thought you were getting a good deal on used avionics and were wrong. They told you how to prevent that mistake in the future. Caveat emptor. Time to mark this down under “lessons learned” and move on before we all add you to our “ignore” list. I don’t buy used panel-mounted avionics and when I buy ANYTHING on the internet I am fully prepared to lose that money. Sounds like you are still learning this lesson. Even though I have a Garmin glass panel and have never considered Avidyne avionics I appreciated the sharing of information and some of the discussion this generated but, really, it’s time to stop. I think your expectation was reasonable, but that’s just a limitation of listening to people on the internet who like to speak in superlatives and silence the naysayers. I had my Ovation flow across the country to take it to the “best MSC in the world” located in the state with big hats and it was a huge disappointment. Not only were they expensive and late (by about a month) but they also didn’t order the parts until I reminded them and had the plane on the “back burner” and didn’t do things until I called. Not to mention missed a few items o specifically asked about that ended up costing me some $$$. In retrospect, I probably shouldn’t have rushed them because they did a crappy job and incorrectly set the fuel flow and almost overheated my engine (among other things I’ve previously documented here) and then told me to pound sand when I tried to get them to make it right. So my take on it is that you’re in a relationship with them now and it’s better to just let them do things at their own pace then try to pressure them and have them do an unsatisfactory job. Like I said, the pictures I’ve seen of their work is nice so in several years you probably won’t care that it took an extra month or two to get everything done.

If it’s the paint shop I’m thinking about, they are notorious for almost always being delayed. When I purchased my plane I had them do some touch up paint. I foolishly planned a trip the day after they were supposed to be done (after they assured me they would be) and showed up with my family ready to go only to find out they weren’t done yet. Ended up going back about three times and then finally gave up when I realized that they really seemed to have no interest in finishing and doing quality work. I’ve seen some beautiful pictures of their work and I know a couple of people here are big cheerleaders for them, but based on my experience I decided that if I ever needed any painting (even touch up) I would go elsewhere. I was using the shop across the ramp from them for maintenance at the time and I mentioned how annoyed I was with the delay and lack of communication about the delay and they suggested my experience was not unique. I visited T&P Aero Refinishers at Salinas a couple of years ago and was really impressed. I decided that’s where I would go if I needed painting.

If Ice Pilots NWT is any indication, you don’t want to mess with transport Canada. Anyone else feel that the risk/benefit of having a TAA with an FAA STC vs. a 1970’s panel with a single vacuum pump and no standby doesn’t make a lot of sense? Netflix does have an interesting documentary on the 737 Max, though. Probably explains why my Boeing stock hasn’t been doing so well.

I think it’s inevitable with kids these days. I was flying with my son and I said “Look there’s Mt. Shasta just off the wing!” He looked up from his iPad for a second and said “That’s nice.” At least he doesn’t use the iPad when he’s the one doing the flying. I purposely “forgot” his iPad on our last trip and he said “I guess I’ll fly since I have nothing to do.” Gotta love the enthusiasm! -

I didn’t actually speak much with the crew. I called airport ops and they came over and spoke with the crew. I figured this was following the proper “chain of command” and I feel like my nonverbal communication adequately communicated how I felt. I’m not sure what would have happened in the scenario you described. My wife and I poke fun at those who conspicuously wear their scrubs, hospital badges and white coats out in public. I don’t know anyone I respect who does that and it’s certainly not the best infection control practice. Yuck! I had (barely) enough time to drive so I figured I would cut my losses and just drive instead of seeing how quickly they could move their apparatus. It’s a good reminder to have a solid Plan B when you need to be somewhere. ”If you have time to spare, go by air.” -
Hi Peter, Welcome to the board. I’m sorry you are disillusioned by your experience. As the saying goes, “opinions are like external voluntary anal sphincters - everyone has one.” Some people seem to be a little more disinhibited than others and post things that probably didn’t need to be posted. Some are generally nice but do have very strong opinions on certain subjects. I’m certainly guilty of at least one of those. Statistically, several people here would be expected to have mental health disorders. This board isn’t very strictly moderated which is a good thing because it allows for very open discussions. There are also clearly drawbacks that arise from this format as well. There is an “ignore” feature that some of us find quite useful in the case where we’ve identified certain individuals whose posts rarely seem to contribute meaningfully to a civil discussion. The user will not know that you have blocked them so there’s really no harm in using it. Have you learned anything on your other discussion board that you would like to share?

That seems like good advice. I never scheduled the meeting with FSDO and after talking to the airport manager I didn't feel as strongly about it. My initial motivation to contact FSDO came because one of the airport workers was trying to argue that since it was a taxiLANE closure and not a taxiWAY closure they were not required to issue a NOTAM. This may very well be true, but it seemed pretty lame either way. I was hoping FSDO would clarify the issue but I agree with everyone else that it would probably cause more harm than good. I guess I'll get to think more about it during my 3.5 hour drive home. -

I appreciate your response. That’s pretty much how I felt. Yes, to many of us the airplanes are not just toys. Realizing I’d have seven hours of driving ahead of me because someone decided letting us know that we wouldn’t be able to get our planes out was “not my job” did not make me very happy. Then one of the first patients I saw at work was my age and had a terminal diagnosis so I stopped feeling sorry for myself and moved on. It is really disappointing though to see this downward spiral toward higher prices and less service. The airport recently announced they were ending the 2 year leases and instead doing month-to-month leases where they would be able to adjust the prices more often. My accounting company wants to charge 33% more this year (even though last year so many people were out sick that the service was horrible). Seems like the “new normal” is paying more for less and being expected to like it.
