Riveted avionics stack removal
TheTurtle replied to TheTurtle's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
15 hours? No rivets that I could find. 4 screws and 2 nuts and the old tray came out. new tray slides right in. If I knew which way was up on the new tray I would screw it in and she'll be ready for the new unit... I went b the avionics shop just to take a look at this tray I was going to have to drill rivets to install. He just gave me the tray and said good luck, take your time. Took me 3ish hours and thats mainly because I couldnt find my short screwdrivers in this disaster of a hangar. Now hopefully this was all the problem was. And theres not some other rivets somewhere that have to be removed??? Bonus points if anybody knows which side is up in the third picture. I havent looked up the gxp345 install manual yet. -

Riveted avionics stack removal
TheTurtle replied to TheTurtle's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
makes sense its just that the CDI is all the way on the other side of the panel beside the fuel pump switch and theres 200 zip ties on the wires Ill see what I can do though. -
Riveted avionics stack removal
TheTurtle replied to TheTurtle's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
as far as I know its just removing the stack that is the issue. He quoted me 15 hours for the install and install of the GPS antenna etc. Then had his guy go check it out for the real paper quote. found it was riveted and then called me and said 30hours. I laughed at him. But as I look at it and ive seen whats back there with the rats nest of wires Im wondering what they think is 15 hours worth of additional work. -
So I went with the GTX345. Shop called today and said instead of 15 hours labor its going to be 30 because my stack is riveted in place... They will do owner assist and give me the tray to install myself. grumble grumble. I started a new threa don removing the tray here if anybody has any hints or tips or tricks.
-
I bit the bullet and got a GTX345. Shop called back and said my avionics stacks is riveted in and replacing the transponder just went from 15 to 30 hours labor. They said they have no problem with owner assist. Theyll give me the tray and i can install it. My transponder is above my INOP ADF. Any body got any tips on removing the AT50A TSO tray? what else has to come out to get to what I need to get to. Are airplane rivets the same as any other rivet and I just have to drill them out? What about metal shavings? Im thinking Ill remove the ADF head unit while Im there. Ill remove the CDI for it at some other time.

this is a cross post to the AOPA FB group so sorry if you saw it already. To ADSB or not to ADSB My old narco AT50A TSO wont pass pitot static check. Needs an $800 part for a 20+ year old transponder. So my options are spend 1250 now to fix the AT50a and sometime between now and 2020 get a GDL84 to deal with ADSB. Theres no way im putting 1000 into it and then yanking it for a new system in a few years. other option is a GTX45. Its the Cadillac I guess. But its all done and I dont have to worry about adsb, streaming to a ipad or waas anymore. My plane doesnt have Waas and will never have a fancy 430w or higher so the GTX30 wont work since I have no waas to feed it. not really interested in the appareo system as Im pretty annoyed they dumped support on the old stratus. makes me wonder what theyll drop later? any thoughts? the price is only a few hundred more for the GTX345 and if that old narco ever shits the bed again ill be on the losing side of that equation. But I get to put off a large chunk of AVGAS by just fixing it. Really im just happy my wifes giving me the option!!

I have no real idea what Im looking for as far as trends, or anything else for that matter. But the device does log data, and I like nice graphs, and computers are smart so there must be something that analizes log data and tells me x y and z.. What can you point me to? Im always looking to learn more about my plane.
-
nope they link to savvy, some 1980's desktop app and an excel spreadsheet. Im thinking of throwing something together in Access. Or maybe finally figure out how to use splunk.
-
what software do you use to look at your log data? I have an Insight G3. It dumps to csv. I uploaded a few logs to savvy analysis and it looks nice and stuff but I dont see a good way to compare flights or look for trends. it will automatcally warn you when a sensor was over an alarm level. But for instance my oil pressure seems low. looking at previous flights it seems normal. I would think the software should see the trend of lowering pressures and tell me. I see there are a couple paid programs out there. I also saw an excel spreadsheet with picot tables (although now I cant find it again). So what do you use? And what do you look for?

Why does what happens at Santa Monica Airport Matter?
TheTurtle replied to mooneygirl's topic in General Mooney Talk
I think harrison ford has been fairly vocal about keeping it open. Other than him, yea, crickets from the libs with their private jets.- 14 replies

hah yea I remember. for the most part those full page popups on a new browser window have gone away. Some sites you'd go to and all of sudden they spam 5 new browser windows. good times!
-
you noobs should just get adblock... people actually see ads still? Aside from the annoying pop overs you cant close etc etc. They are a leading attack vector for malware. BLOCK ADs!! to mooneyspace. sorry, but ad's are no longer a viable business plan. If the ad guys hadnt been such scumbags then maybe it would be ok, but they are scum. full page popovers, flash BS, malware, totally irrelevant ads, the same ad 4 times on one page, autoplay videos, not to mention the orwellian tracking done by these guys. Im all for paid services. Free to read, pay to post or something along those lines. or 5 posts for free so you can lure the new people in and they can see the great community. And after all this bashing I suppose I should subscribe This forum is worth it.

great info thanks. If she doesnt trim out next flight those steps will be on my list!

CDI reversed left and right deviation
TheTurtle replied to TheTurtle's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I have the install manuals for the kns80 and ki206. I didnt leave the pins reversed. Just swapped them and tested. Of course I'd test it in VMC first. I scrubbed a flight today for IFR training because its actually might have some IMC and I dont trust my DG and the compass needs to be swung. Fortunately here in SoCal its rare to not have clear and a million so I can still train until I take her in for annual in december. I'm crazy but not stupid. At 40 y/o I no longer think im invincible. Pain hurts more and I dont like it. I do have an IA looking over my shoulder. Im lucky. his hangar is right next door to mine so ive been sucking up all the free advice I can get. I looked all over and pressed every button on the KNS 80 but nothing seems backcoursish. A search in the manual didnt reveal any hits for backcourse either. I called affordable avionics and will probably just have to bite the bullet and take it over there. PS sometimes you sound like my mother... but I think I like you anyway. I dont care what those guys say about you -
CDI reversed left and right deviation
TheTurtle replied to TheTurtle's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
was always broken since I got it in August and the PO mentioned he knew it was backwards as well. -
I have a KI 206 CDI connected to a KNS80. The left/right deviation needle is backwards. ie, if you are left of rad it shows you right of rad. It is correct when you are on the rad or crossing it. DME works on the KNS80. Glideslope seems to work but not as well as my other radio/cdi. Pins j and n are for the left and right deviation in the connector. I swapped those 2 pins (watched by an IA) and am getting no change. Another IA said "then it must be a problem with the OBS resolver pins", and proceeded to tell me another story about swapping 2 of the 6 OBS resolver pins and fixing a similar problem. before I go swapping pin all over the place and letting out all my blue smoke I was wondering if anybody else had any thoughts as to the root issue.

bonus points if you know the size of the nut back there haha. Is it the same as the one for the rudders? I was just starting to think about how Im going to get back behind there to remove the servo to ship to brittan. Sounds like a complete overhaul of all the servos and the pilot valve and TC gyro is barely more than an AMU.
-
a small update to this. I cleaned and lubed the jack screw for the trim. I also disconnected the chains attaching the servos to the alierons and rudder. I noticed when I had the panels off if I pulled on the chains I could pull the servos out but everything was tight and felt like it still had some vacuum even thought the engine was off. So I just removed the chains completely. Flew it today and OMG what a difference. I can turn the damn thing like a normal plane. Trim seemed to work much better as well. I was just shooting local approaches so never got much over 150mph but I was able to stay level with no issues and didnt feel nearly as much resistance in the trim wheel. Im doing my long XC under the hood tomorrow so Ill have more chance to see how it does straight and level and fast descents. but did I mention holy *&^% I can turn now!!! So Im going to yank out all the PC stuff and ship it to brittain for an overhaul. I suspect its the pilot valve under the dash causing the issues but might as well get it all done at once while my better half is letting me spend money!
-
can really argue that if it aint broke dont fix it. Somebody thinks they should at least be inspected every 500 hours though. I hear the vacuum pump is easy to replace with the mags out any way so maybe ill at least get them IRANd
-
Sounds like Kelly is the skip white of mags. On the topic... My prebuy squawked the fact that the mags havent had a 500 hour inspection. They seem to be about 1700 hours old. Mag checks at runup are fine. They are slick 4345 LAG 15 ROT L REV B. I want to have "something" done at annual. Not sure if an inspection or replacement. I was looking at those Kelly units on spruce. glad I checked here first. What is the conversion process to switch to bendix? How many AMUs am I going to be missing? Where do you get your mag inspections done on Slicks if I went that route and whats it usually cost? Sending them to different shops seems smart as does waiting between swapping each. But I kind of want to get it all done as well as a new vacuum pump during annual. thoughts?

where is the PC pilot valve
TheTurtle replied to TheTurtle's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Yea I talked to them as well. seem very helpful and the prices are reasonable. well honestly they seem crazy cheap for anything in aviation. -
My PC system pilot valve is hanging under the panel by the vacuum lines. I cant imagine that's a factory option... The SM says you should be able to access the valve via the #3 panel which is the instrument access panel in front of the windshield, but theres no good picture of where exactly. I suspect it was moved in the 70s when the panel was upgraded?
-
hah! To be fair my 1948 massey turns better than my mooney. I hate to disrespect a good tractor. Mooney feels like Im fighting the PC system even though the yoke button is removed. Worse turning left than right. Its next on my list after I sort out the trim and the backwards CDI deflection.
-
good idea. ill try that. Im fine flying it. its just more work and feels like an old Massey ferguson tractor from the farm.
