Just added an overview of the GI 275 in Standby ADI configuration.
-
Pressing the PFD knob toggles between the set barometric pressure and standard Barometric pressure. Pressing the HSI knob sets the heading bug to your current heading. Long presses of the knobs brings up options, messages, menus, etc. The text is actually not too small. The major items like airspeed, altitude, heading, barometric pressure font sizes are similar to my G500 TXi in the Mooney. HSI numbers are just as big. We were originally going to use G5’s but after I saw the clarity and number sizes on these units we sold the G5’s on another job and bought these. The G5’s comparatively have much smaller fonts.

Yes, another Garmin/Avidyne comparison video

@midlifeflyer just curious over all which unit do you prefer between the two and why? -
Yes, another Garmin/Avidyne comparison video

@midlifeflyer well done video. I never really use OBS in the GTN 750 because “Course To” is much simpler and direct a solution. Have you thought of any other normal use of OBS in the GTN other than course intercepts? -
@carusoam They say easy upgrade because it fits in the same two inch space, so not much panel work, however needs new antenna installed and new wire harness, plus some panel work due to the transponder removal.

@nels Our shop falls within the range Niko provided. We are not below 10K. KMQS airport in SE Pennsylvania. Don’t know if that qualifies as reasonable flying distance from Cincinnati.

Enjoy

Byron, I poked around the info on the G3X 7” version. All the G3X’s we have installed thus far are the 10.6” ones. I believe the 7” as a PFD cannot have an integrated EIS. The 7” can be a stand alone EIS or a MFD with EIS. So using a 7” G3X would require another EIS solution if EIS was desired. It also would need a backup PFD or steam gauges for IFR redundancy. The one nice thing about the GI 275 is you can get the PFD and HSI with reversionary and you don’t need anything else.
-
Yeah the standalone GI 275 is about $1k more than a EDM 900 MSRP, assuming install cost is the same. From my initial playing around with the EIS I can’t honestly say it’s has $1,000 more capability. Garmin does have a https://download.garmin.com/rebates/Garmin_GI_275_EIS_Promotional_Rebate.pdf $1,000 rebate on the GI 275 ESI going on now. User interface is simple, and you have multiple pages for the main screen, EGT and CHT graphs, and the fuel computer calculations. Not sure a lot is gained having touch screen. But overall I do like the unit. I personally think that an EIS in a C150 is overkill to begin with, its the first time we ever did one in a 150. We have it to demo for customers. I think some may like the common aesthetic if they are doing an all GI 275 cockpit.
-
Never looked at the small G3X. We were putting G5’s in this plane when the GI 275s came out and we liked the GI 275’s better. The EIS was an afterthought.
-
And then you still need a backup right? Right, and a G3X doesn’t fit in this aircraft.

Demonstrated x wind in the M20J is 11 kts, POH says over 12 kts you land with 15° flaps. I add 5 kts to the landing too when not landing full flaps. If you have the 2900 Gross Weight increase and you are flying over 2,740 then the POH calls for a 15° flaps for ANY cross wing under 10 kts, and no flaps above 10 kts and to add 6 kts speed above 2,740 lbs. One of the most memorable x winds I’ve landed in was a 15 kt gusting 20 kt x wind component. Actual wind 24 gusting 30. Happened to get it on video too. Link below. Had to stay on it, and in gusts you have to just keep adjusting. I feel like the plane could have handled more. I think I personally wouldn’t like to try over 30 kts max preferably a solid x wind; not gusts. I like to crab down to the threshold then transition to cross control. Sometimes when it’s gusty, you just have to adapt and fly the plane... The hardest ones are where you have a strong X wind, gusting, and a variable direction so you can have headwinds turn to tailwinds and vice-versa while your dealing with the x wind. If there was 20+ kt winds doing that kind of stuff, it can be very tricky. Jump to the 19:00 min mark in this video for the gusty x wind landing.

Not sure. I can ask. What does your PFD inner knob default to?
-
I’m going to be posting a video soon Highlighting a GI 275 install we did in a Cessna 150 to build an IFR glass trainer. It has three GI 275’s setup as PFD, HSI, and EIS. The HSI knob default is the heading bug. The PFD default knob is barometric pressure.

(Pics) New engine and panel in my 1980 M20K!

I remember, I think your panel is superb. I would feel right at home flying it! You have all I did plus even more! -
largest IOS phone/tablet for right side of panel
Rmag replied to kris_adams's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
@Kris_Adams mine is an Air Gizmos mount so the iPad is removable, the button on the right center ejects it. Regular iPad won’t fit. I had an iPad mini 4 originally, now it’s an iPad mini 5. Regarding mounting an iPad there: it depends how you use your iPad. I am essentially using it for database updates and flight plan transfers via a Garmin flightstream 510. It is also a back up in case of and electrical loss. It is also nice for a copilot to mess around with. If you are using it as some kind of a primary or chart reader, it is not an ideal spot over on the right. But with all the glass I have in my cockpit I do not need it as a primary so it serves its intended function over there perfectly well for me. -
I did all this... but on a ‘87 airframe...

You can give my Sales Manager, Steve Schofield a call at 484-718-3136. We do N number changes quite often, and we can also re-strap your transponder if needed as well. Our facility is at KMQS.

@BrianC I use an 8 for cloudy day conditions, a 16 for mixed conditions or morning, late afternoon sunlight, and a 32 for bright mid day sun. An 8 can be used in all those conditions, just not as ideal for bright sun. But if only buying one, get an 8. Cheaper solutions also exist... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F193DFQ/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

@Steve Skinner Did your avioincs shop ever fix this? A pilot can only adjust fuel flow via calibration +/- 15%. Your shop did not set the K factor when they setup your fuel flow gauge. Have them look at page 5-67 of the G500 TXi Installation Manual. There is a table of K Factors for the various fuel flow sensors. Once they enter the K factor appropriate for your sensor in the fuel flow gauge setup page, it should be pretty close and you then you can fine tune it with the Pilot calibration with actual consumptions. I also noticed you don’t have fuel pressure on your EIS strip. Is that purposeful?

@BrianC I used https://www.polarprofilters.com/collections/gopro_hero6_accessories/products/gopro-karma-filter any Neutral desensity filter will do the trick.

@MrRodgers I said, “Good Trip.” He replied, “More than good, it will never be repeated.” I think he meant it was a once in a lifetime adventure that could never be repeated. Even if we did it again, this trip was the first time he was flown across the country by me. In all my life, Dad was the one doing all the flying. Definately was one of our life highlights for the both of us. I think part of us were a bit sad that it was over. I was happy that we got to share this time. In our busy lives, A 7 day Trip with Dad doing something we both love is precious time invested. Doesn’t happen often.

@midlifeflyer it’s actually a GPS friction dash mount. The raised part is filled with something heavy like sand and the bottom has a rubberized texture so it won’t slide around on takeoff, etc. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001B663TE/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
