  1. Thanks. I did get transition training with a well known Mooney CFI. I just don't think this particular subject came up. As I said this isn't about crosswinds it's about operating in windy conditions more or less straight down the runway. 30 knots sure, I could do that in a 172. I am just curious about where more experienced folks draw the line in a Mooney.
  2. I have lots of hours in a 172 so I know what it can handle or rather what I can handle in it, but I am still relatively new to my M20J. The question is how much wind are people comfortable with? Assuming there is a long wide runway and little crosswind component I suppose this is as much about how much wind is ok to taxi with. What do you guys say? How much wind will you take off or land with?
  3. Something did indeed break. Had an alternator failure about 50 miles from Lubbock. When I told approach the deal they were kind enough to clear me to land when I was still 15 miles out. The guys at Lubbock Aero got me going again in a couple hours. All in all not nearly as much of a pain as it might have been. Back up plan was bluetooth phone into headset and call tower on the phone. In fact that worked to check the ATIS while I had all the electronics off. Anyway a big thank you to ATC and Lubbock Aero.
  4. Thanks everyone for the information. Just what I was looking for.
  5. As Clint Eastwood put it, " A man's got to know his limitations." I am quite happy to pay someone who knows what they are doing. Now if someone wanted to teach me.... We would probably both go crazy. Haha. I'll stick to my skill set.
  6. Hello everyone. For the time being it looks like I will be basing my "J" at KCFO. I will be needing an oil change soon. Does anyone have a recommendation for where to get it done either here or nearby? Thanks.
  7. There has been some interesting discussion here. Since I am one of those guys who just can't walk past a pot without giving it a stir or two I will add some thoughts. Questions that would be nice to have answers to. How many of the current virus deaths would have died from something else in the next 6 months or so? That number is certainly not zero. Maybe next years flu mortality will be unusually low because the COVID got them now. How many people are staying home because of fear of the hospital and dying from otherwise treatable conditions. Not sure how easing things would change that number but I'm sure the number isn't zero. Also how many deaths are there going to be because of the lockdown? Suicide, accidental overdose? Before COVID one of the recurring big stories was the opiate epidemic. That was killing people plenty fast too. I would be shocked if those numbers haven't gotten worse. Put me in the group that would like to see individual states and cities decide when to let up if for no other reason than people are going to start anyway. I will not confirm or deny reports that I got a blackmarket haircut in my barbers garage the other day. As for miracle cure I have my doubts but for a promising treatment/prophylactic I would put my money on convalescent serum.
  8. Greetings Mooneyspace. Is this the right place to say hello? I am the newest new member. Picked up a new to me 83J a few weeks ago. So far it's going ok. I have no doubt I am going to have a lot of questions. This seems like a great place for that. As for basic info I have about 600 hours, mostly in a 172 that I owned for a while before I took an 8 year break in flying. Planning to fly a lot between San Antonio and Denver. My mission if you want to call it that is to just get in a bunch of traveling to wherever the weather looks good for the next 6 months or so before going back to work full time.
