  1. Wow, fantastic ! thanks Oldguy. My panel design begins... and, found out I've bought myself a GTN 750 tomorrow !
  2. Oldguy, thank you for a great method to approach the over haul. I'll start the panel sketch to get the general layout planned out. I did notice that the JPI 830 didnt show face panel dimensions with the offset on the site, which would help to preplan some. It does look like it will encroach on the next hole location. 300, thank you ! so glad to hear someone else has been down this path...and almost exactly the same. That helps a lot as well. I figured there had to be a big weight savings because I want all that old hardware removed but didn't expect that much ! Great. I haven't considered the G5 yet but a guy at Sarasota Av that said I'd have to have an HSI as well...dont have one, not sure if that's mandatory. I'll compare the costs and figure out which one to go with. I have looked at the PS Eng 8000BT and already had my eye on that one. Had planned on keeping one of the KX radios for the back up. I'm guessing the remote mount ADS-b saves on panel space but running everything in the GTN 750? I used to have a large waterjet at work and a full machine shop that would be perfect for just cutting entirely new instrument panels. Sure wish I had that now !!!
  3. Gents, I believe I have a chance to buy a Garmin GTN 750 at an incredible price and it includes the unit 12/28v, connector back plate, rack, and Garmin GA 35 WAAS GPS antenna AND a current 8130. The unit was working perfectly when removed for an upgrade. My 1980 M20K is 100% original with the King silver crown package so I have a lot of changes coming due real soon to get ADS-b compliant. I've been looking at the Lynx 9000 thinking I didn't have a GPS source, but with the GTN 750, solved. I know the install costs are going to be astronomical but I plan on walking into a shop and handing them a pile of compatible parts and say "make it pretty ...and work", all at one time. I already have a JPI 830 in a box waiting, so also want to get a new comm panel, (my plane only has 2 place intercom plugs-need to add 2 rear) and of courses a new ADS-B transponder. (decisions, decisions) I'm pulling the entire interior for a complete upgrade and to upholster all of the interior panels as well. I plan on having all the interior out when I take it to the avionics shop (still need to find a good reasonable one within a couple hours flight time of Sacramento) so its quicker and easier for them to install wiring, antenna, etc. I'm a recreational flyer in my Mooney and wouldn't give a second thought flying back to the Midwest or farther from northern California so dont necessarily need all the latest and greatest digital wiz bangs, but it will be nice to step into modern times with a real GPS Panel unit. (KNS-80 and iPad up to now). Is there anything I should know up front or should be planning for to avoid having to go back 2 steps later on? I've attached a current panel pic to help. Hope it comes through ok. Thanks all ! This site rocks !!! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone ! (Can you tell I'm happy to be back in the US for the holidays from Afghanland !!?)
  4. I suspected they looked like interior colored material and maybe those black things were indeed a fastener.... But thank you ! You just showed me how to fasten my pockets onto my new interior panels ....when I do 'em ! Great way to use the automotive push-posts. Usually see those on newer plastic inner fender wheels and under the hood insulation. Cool idea ! Very nice pockets too !
  5. Haha yea, sorry about the final crotch shot at the end! Always being the pilot and gawking out the window at all the big flappy moving parts of the wing, I was caught off guard by seein gthat at first.. then I thought of crap !! PHONE - VIDEO ! I work with a group of Aero Engineers and thought they'd get a kick out of analyzing the heck out of that. The more I watched it, the cooler it was. yes, the airflow is impressive for sure !
  6. If I were Bruce I'd probably be worried about that spiked looked medieval clothing laying on the wing that you haven't told him about yet !!!!!!! Don't hurt him !! Some of the rest of us need him still !
  7. I had occasion to fly out of Heathrow a month ago on an Airbus A380 giant. After we broke ground on the climb out I shot this cool video of the left inboard engine's nacelle strake generating its vortex trail back over the wing. I was surprised at the boundary layer thickness. It's hard to scale due to the size of the wing but there was actually about 2 feet between the wing and the trail. Thought everyone would enjoy some pilot-aero geek stuff. Sorry it wasn't edited better.
  8. Marauder, hello again ! Please pass on to Bruce that I'd be first in line for a kit. Was actually scouring his site and seen that they had a "kit " priced of around $2100 for the long body...panels, etc. but it was dated about 2015 or so. I was going to call to check on getting all the plastic panels and anything else he would have available to make the install. Love doing that stuff myself so a kit would be perfect. I'd sure be interested in the video and any kit ideas he would have. annnnd, just for his SA, I have an '80 K model. thanks again !!
  9. I'd love to stop by but wrong coast ! ..well, and I'm still deployed for 3 more months. Actually I will be doing my complete interior when I get back, new upholstery, everything and I've looked at his site so many times I could probably quote it by now... Will be very interested in seeing before and after pics if you can post them. The idea of adding those little bits of armrest space, etc to make the big-room feel are what I am looking for. Thank you for the heads up and will stay attached to this thread!
  10. LOL - sorry bout that !!!! All I know is that I'm supposed to root for the DUCKS and keep the bills paid ! haha I stand corrected. I worked in the Auto Industry for 15 yrs in Tool Engineering and flew to Detroit regularly... There, it was always Michigan vs Michigan State. (I got those wrong too if it lessens my offense any)
  11. You mean we're supposed to preflight and flight plan...AND think about fuel ...weather - ha ha ? oops, Im doin somethun wrong ! Throw caution to the wind...just get in and go !
  12. We keep our baby at L36 tucked under the Sacramento Charlie airspace. We've driven up to see my stepson who was attending Oregon State in Eugene. A I-5 interstate drive that takes you the winding way past Mt Shasta. A 9 hour drive ... each way ! I decided to show my new wife (of 1.5 years) how cool GA and especially our Mooney really is for those not-so-long-trips. We got to the airport at 0830 on a Saturday, off the ground by 0915, 1 hr 50 min flight time (right next to Mt Shasta - cool pics at 12k alt), wheels down and tied down by 1130. kids picked us up, had a cool lunch and hung out with them for a while. back to the airport and off the deck by 1545, landed at L36 and at the hanger door and out of the plane by 1800. All that in the same 9 hours that it would have taken to just drive up there. I love my Mooney! ...and to think I was looking for a twin when a friend suggested a Mooney!
  13. The old airline Captain climbs into the left cockpit seat and looks over to his young second in command for the flight and says "Don't let me wake up and catch you sleeping!" ...
  14. "For just pennies a day you could make a difference in a Mooney childs life...(me) ...adopt a pilot child and bring joy to a poor pilots life today" (still me) Daaaad, I promise to love your new floor, feed it wax, pet it all the time with a new broom, and clean it and love it .... I promise !! Beautiful job.. so when's the fly in pilot breakfast ??
  15. Fantastic, thank you for the info on the Savvy site. I'll definitely hook up with that to put the 830 info to full use. As for GPS source.... I understand the importance of that for sure, just not sure which way to go. I'm thinking since all my stack is original, most everything's going to have to be changed at once to be cost effective. I've scoured over dozens of threads here on ADS-B, GPS/Radios, Comm panels... It doesn't make sense to me to have the panel ripped out just to put in a GPS, or even an older one like a 430W, Garmin or Avidyne, and then later have to go backin for the ADS-B update. I want the 830 in now but will most likely have to tie it in to the new GPS later in the spring. It seems much easier for most guys that already have one or the other GPS, maybe a G 430 or 530 to upgrade to the GTN's or Avi's, but I'm starting with zero modern. Decisions, decisions.
  16. CNOE, I apologize for taking this thread sideways for a moment, but I've bought the JPI 830 and its waiting for me to get home and get it installed (might try it myself) in a couple weeks. My K Model is all virgin with the Silver Crown stack so this will be its first modern upgrade. I've seen guys posting their graphs as you have. Where are you getting that software? Does it come with the 830 and is loadable to read the downloaded data? I've done a lot of engineering flight testing but not in the GA world so looking forward to having this amount of data from my plane. Thanks
  17. Sorry, Ops are slow tonight and I'm bored. Too much time to think. ...back to my new Mooney panel dreaming...
  18. So...if he decides to get into politics by flying hookers to politicians, can he do it with his commercial or will he need that ATP? Technically would he be getting paid by the politician to fly the hooker to him (need the ATP for that) or by the hooker as his employee, and she's just hitching a ride to wherever he happens to be flying to? another business opportunity ...kinda like an upscale pizza delivery service , only .... ? Or, if he flies to pick up the politician and takes him for a "pleasure flight"... what state legal jurisdiction on prostitution will apply, or would none of them since its in the air the entire time ? yet another possible business opportunity ?
  19. I had to travel to London the first week of November and ended up having a full day with nothing to do so like every good pilot would - headed up to the RAF Museum in Hendon. Took an Uber ride from downtown and it cost about $35 each way and ended up being an hour ride. I think it was only 10 miles but the traffic...not good. Just sit back and take in the sites. It's free to get in and consisted of 4 or 5 large hanger buildings. There was a separate building that had all of the WW1 aircraft and memorabilia ..very cool too. I spent 5 hours walking around the place. I think there's over 100 aircraft in the main building, pretty impressive. There's plenty of WW2 fighters including Spitfires, Focke Wolf's, ME 262, Harvard, Thunderbolt, Junkers JU87 and then the bombers, B24, B17, TB 25 Mitchell, the Avro Lancaster B1 was impressive too. There are a number of jet aircraft as well; a Gloster Meteor (very cool), F6, Vampire, Hawker Hunter... and the massive former nuclear bomber The Vulcan. Plenty others obviously and all very cool to study. If you have a free half day and happen to find yourself in London, it is well worth a trip to northern London, Hendon. Great place inside to eat too.
  20. Marauder, Thank you for the very detailed explanation of the differences. That helped me a lot to understand its value and the possible latency of the FIS-b wx broadcasts. I have to also say that I'm somewhat smitten by your panel ! ha My '80 231, bless her little heart is all original but that's about to change. Perhaps this can be just of her updates. If I can ask, which of the PS Eng comm panel is that? I've been looking at those as well, and will probably opt for the -8000BT. I am wondering if my current antenna cable will work for the WX 1000 installation? I understand form above that the wiring, antenna will not work, but that would save running at least the antenna cable. I suspect it would not since materials, etc improve over the product lifecycle. Thank you again ! It was great to see the different information systems at work showing the different returns, all to make a better informed decision.
  21. Like Zulle I have an older version, but the WX 7A that I've never used and cant get it to actually do anything so I assume its inop. I see that the newer version has to be completely be swapped out with all hardware. I've never used a storm scope (or flown in wx that required it) but have a question about storm scopes in general as far as usefulness goes. With our Garmin's and our Avidyne's, our iPads, Stratus, etc that have wx in great detail, what's different about these storm scopes that would warrant me upgrading from what I currently have? Please understand I am sincerely curious and not downing the older hardware. To be honest I see in the AOPA VRef I get an add-on for having the WX 1000 and I get 0 for my WX 7A. I would like to upgrade but need some reasoning. Thanks All
  22. OW Hotel, PM me for the fix !! I'm deployed so might take a day to answer but you're gonna like this !
  23. Great thread guys. I've got a 231 that has a functioning TIT but I've bought an 830 and will put it in next month. Haven't ordered the JP probe yet but it will be waiting for me when I get back from deployment. I'd be curious to learn more about adding the JP probe in the same proximity to the original as well. Bear in mind I haven't begun research to actually doing it so have no idea about the details of installing the second probe. I'll keep posted to this thread. Thanks for all the info as always.
