Garmin GTX 335 Does it talk to GDL 39
MyNameIsNobody replied to MyNameIsNobody's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Ordered from Spruce today. Not in stock, but scheduled for 5/2. Hope that is not a "big deal". Reserved rebate at FAA site. A better solution for "us" than the Lynx with active traffic. Want vs. "need" vs. $. -
New Mooneys, any interest at all?
MyNameIsNobody replied to Urs_Wildermuth's topic in General Mooney Talk
Pssst, Austria has developed/IS developing a VTOL Ducted fan aircraft platform. They say they have "solved" the battery problem. Toyota is developing a water powered semi. This carbon aviation idea has a limited lifespan. The next best planes will be powered by battery NOT fossil fuels. Meanwhile a government funded solar operation that took 10's of millions of federal money just went bankrupt. If Chinese can't make M-10 go in China, there was zero likelihood of it being a going concern in USA shute...chute. I want to shoot those that Shute vs. chute... -
And best door to leak and be a sail in the wind on the ramp.

An accu-flite (Brittain) and a heading bug DI will function with your existing PC system and give you a heading track. Combined with an i-pad with GPS track you have a relatively inexpensive "auto-pilot" install. I also have a Brittain Accu-trac (GPS driven on GNC300xl) and I don't use it often. Just no need as the bug does a nice job of tracking a heading. Adjust bug if winds change and you are a little off course. If trimmed the Altitude hold is redundant. I have it, but again NOT a "need" thing.

And if you are not selfish you can monitor 121.5 when others aren't talking on it and making noises through the headsets too. -

Sound Deadening insulation adds weight and weight impacts useful load and speed. They invented these nifty things called intercoms and noise canceling headsets. You wear them on your head and you can listen to ATC if you are flight crew or music and other passengers if you are a "rider". Check them out. Been out for 25 years or so. -

So the people using 12.5 to chat with each other. The ones that clog the frequency making noises and goofing around. The ones that cause those that monitor the frequency to SHUT IT OFF....They are not called out for being selfish and I am. Face palm... -

NOPE. Make up your mind dude. First I am told to get the more expensive monitoring system because 121.5 is "dead" and no one monitors it anymore. Now I am "Selfish" for not monitoring it and looking out for my fellow man. That is an overt direct personal attack that would get me banned...and it is political. But you know what, I am going to just laugh at you instead of being triggered by your ridiculous comment on what brought "me" freedom. Wouldn't that be "us"? Talk to the hand Ftlausa. -
Garmin GTX 335 Does it talk to GDL 39
MyNameIsNobody replied to MyNameIsNobody's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
This is what I had hoped. This is the option for me. I have the 39 running to a 696 wired. It receives power from a cigarette lighter on far right of panel. Battery is back-up. Wires are well hidden. I like pilot and the 39 provides Bluetooth weather and what will be a better traffic picture. Thanks for the info. We have an old Narco at50 transponder so this is a nice upgrade. Active traffic would be nice, but no 430 installed so not a big deal to us. Thanks for quick answers everybody. -
Garmin has a nice deal on the integrated GPS version of GTX 335. Includes install kit and antenna package for <$3k. You can also have it installed by an A&P vs. mandatory Garmin installer. My question is: Does anybody know if I will be able to get enhanced Traffic (In) on IPad that is being fed by a GDL 39 unit? I could not find this information on marketing. They say 530/430 796 and "other units". Thanks for any replies and why I should/should not go this route for compliance.

VFR flying, is it right? Some think not being IFR rated and current is "silly" if you own a Mooney. Really? My primary mission is flying two hours north and 2.5 hours south. I fly for pleasure. I don't need to go a certain weekend. The Mooney reduces travel from 12 & 16 hours round trip to 4 and 5. I don't have to deal with construction, duck boats, campers and driving. I drive 30k business miles a year. I don't need/like to drive long distances when I do it week in week out, year in year out for work. I enjoy flying the Mooney. I choose not to obtain my IFR ticket. I think calling me silly is silly. The plane costs me 2grand a year plus gas. Worth it to me for my pleasure time to be pleasureable. I could not do some weekends to my destinations without Mooney as time would be spent driving NOT recreating. My mission is not to fly "around the US". If I am going a long distance I choose Allegiant and a rental car.

M20E with crankcase rcondition good or bad?

Thanks Ross. It is a weekend driver. I put 1-3k per year on. I change oil and filter every fall when I put it away. Cheap and easy. Got to love my Rhino ramps -

I replaced the accessory belt (behind the seat access) on my 987 (06 S) this winter. Hardest part of the job was getting out the crappy bolt securing the safety bar behind headrests. Stripped the poorly fitting torx and had to order a toolset that grabbed the nut to get it out. Parts (I got two from Porsche) were only six bucks and quality was MUCH better. I upgraded the steering wheel too. My interior is all Terricotta and that is a lot of it with full leather. The replacement wheel bought off of Ebay is molded in Asia on an original Porsche part. I went with Terricotta on bottom and black on sides with small strip of Terricotta at 12 o'clock. A little pucker popping and unhooking the airbag. Went together well. Very pleased. Old wheel was not the round center sport that is beefier on the rim. This is a huge improvement in comfort and looks. Son is going to get it someday so not worried about non OEM purist look. Cheers! -

How it has flown or not flown in five years will matter. Jugs age and condition will matter. My plane sat for ten to fifteen and had assessories:Oil Cooler, Hoses, Mags, Exhaust that saw zero attention with the Iran. You are I will say correct on the "what does the history matter" since 2012. Would be a much better gamble than I took. I did NOT pay run out price either. Buyer is proceeding with eyes open vs. my ignorant costly non-blissful experience. -

So new plane in '66. In first six years 1400 hours. Yowza. Overhaul. Four more years and cylinders. Then 40 years until crank. I would want to know how many hours a year have been flown in last 10-20. NOT MANY is my guess... -

MyNameIsNobody replied to Paul S.'s topic in General Mooney Talk
Good advise on pricing as a runout. There are a lot of assessories that may or may not start to cause reliability issues and nickel and dime you. I bought a similar engine. I flew for 100ish hours before a case half separation resulted in oil on the windscreen. These engines will generally give a lot of warning signs to ultimate distress. Grenade-ing over a busy airport is not something I would be losing sleep and waking up sweaty over. Just know you are buying a run out engine that has had some recent work and PLAN on doing an overhaul in the not to distant future. If you buy right and get years of bonus flying before major. GOOD ON YOU. There are E's on controller for 35k that appear "sounder" than this one. What are you looking at paying for this badboy, if I may ask? -
I use the aux fuel pump for prime at engine start. I have never used for tank changes. I do not run tanks dry as I fly for pleasure and find stretching my legs, seeing another airport, taking a leak, landing my plane pleasureable. I switch my tanks on the hour as I have a clock right in front of me with a timer hand. I bet if the truth be told there are many that do NOT use a boost pump on take-off and landing...
