  1. In this case the hole in the stack isn't aligned with the frame access hole, with or without the collar. Once I cleared the frame the screw slides easily in the collar/stack hole. -Robert
  2. First thing to do is ensure you don't have the old original slow bendix starter. The new starters are so much faster that starting is far, far easier. Back in the day these planes were very hard to warm start.
  3. Just finished replacing my gear donuts. The right side was shockingly easy. The left side requires a bit more creativity to get around the squat mechanism but nothing too complex. The only real annoying issue I ran into is that the holes in the upper assembly necessary to work the collar screw out are slightly off. The head of the screw was about a fraction of a millimeter too far forward and raising the gear up and down didn't change the fore/aft alignment. Took some prying to get the screw past the access hole. Is this just me or do most people find this? -Robert
  4. I bet if you run it enough you’ll flush out whatever keeps it from closing
  5. I’m also confused and apprehensive. The faa just sent that letter about Mooney unapproved parts made as owner produced. This seems like the same. There is no way for an owner or a&p to know if these have the same quality. I can just imagine if the failure mode were chucks break off of it. I’d be too afraid to try it. In fact knowing these guys existed I just bought a full set for Spruce
  6. It really seems the hook on my tool is far too long. If I attach it as the book shows look how far off it is. Are there different tools for different models? My hook is 20” long.
  7. Only mechanics who flew my plane were with a MSC. Never had a non Mooney shop do that.
  8. Just finish changing my pucks on the mains (the right was trivial, less than 30 min job). So we got 3 a&ps standing around trying to figure out where the hook on the factory tool attaches to the nose gear assembly. The fsm diagram is so vague. It looks like the hook is far too long to attach to anything you’d want to attach to. Also do you have to remove the grease fitting so the cradle on the jack screw doesn’t break it or does the cut out on the cradle clear it? I don’t suppose anyone has a picture of the tool attached to the nose?
  9. Not in fact but in certification that is true.
  10. Well they did two updates after me and the Canadian version of the NTSB reported this bug I found
  11. Minus baggage it’s pretty hard to get a Mooney out of w&b
  12. Be aware you’ll trigger your state tax collector.
  13. Basic vs advanced. Or even private vs commercial.
  14. I’d love to see the a&p program reworked. No need to learn about jet engines to time the mags on a Mooney. No need to study pressurization and deicing systems to change a fuel drain valve.
  15. That’s basically how Sheppard air works. Gotten some 100%’s with them. Just memorizing
  16. The guy who runs the local community college AP school tells me I should track my time working on my plane. When I did the math it would take several lifetimes to get the time doing that. So I didn’t log the time
  17. It’s a bit of a logic stretch. AHRS units do require some reference to motion to avoid slewing. They take an airspeed input and if that’s not available they should take gps. That was the 275 dual failure. When airpseed wasn’t available it sometimes didn’t calculate gps correctly and went red X. That’s why gps feed is mandatory for an attitude indicator display in the Garmin approval. There is a better tech explanation but that’s probably good enough.
  18. Do you need the tc for the autopilot? Otherwise that’s the first thing I’d ditch.
  19. G5 cannot legally replace pitot static although 275 can. But I don’t recommend it. Dual AHRS failures can happen. Garmin has an SB on it and it happened to me. They talk to each other and tend to hit bugs at the same time. So I kept my vacuum attitude.
  20. I know people who intentionally set it high for high density take offs but just otherwise take off with the prop pulled back slightly
  21. Never thought to look at the tach while rotating
  22. Reminds me of the vor approach into Santa Monica. You had like 1.3 miles to lose 1500 feet. Full slip in the clouds full dirty and hope to land by the end of the runway
  23. You’re talking about the steal pipes? Never heard of replacing those. Usually it’s the rubber hoses under the wheel well. Trivial to replace if you’re already bleeding
  24. There was a guy who had his power lift rating. Someone asked the faa how they could do the same. The faa said you can’t and took that guys rating away. There is no N numbered power lift aircraft yet. Although a lot of these air taxi prototypes look like they would be
  25. If I were thinking about buying Mooney for the long term I would 100% care what 20 somethings care about. Are your customers dying off???
