  1. Ditching in the lake is much different than ditching in the North Atlantic. Anyone know of an instance of someone ditching between greenland and iceland and making it back? Even if you get into the raft the water is so turbulent and cold that it is impossible o stay dry enough to survive. Guess you just have to look at it from a few hundred feet to actually visualize
  2. unless you land on an iceburg. some are big enough to land an airliner
  3. I did this trip before GPS or Loran C in a Meyers 200. The Loran available at that time required a big screen with LOP lines so went without. I did find out that the place to learn to use the ADF is not 800 miles from Frobisher in a snow storm. As most of you know the terrain in that area precludes any sort of landing. The Meyers had 80 gallons and I had a 55 gallon drum in the back seat which was also my means of floating in case of water landing. Used a trailing wire antenna with HF which failed as soon as left Frobisher en-route Godthab. In those days avionics were not as reliable as today. Frobisher to Kef in Iceland took a day but they did not permit leaving the airport building so slept in a chair. Next morning they presented a file with all the weather etc which I was billed a few hundred dollars after arriving home. From there is was about 1300 miles to Biggen Hill if I remember correctly. In Iceland I met a young Lady that was going the other way with passengers in a Mooney. She ferried planes on that route for Mooney factory. Her extra fuel was a small tank in the baggage compartment. No more than 5 or 10 gallons. I had a raft, dry suit, rifle survival rations etc. When leaving Gatwick on the way home I had the rifle under my arm walking around the airport. I ask a Bobbie what to do with it till i left. He suggested Left baggage to check it. They were full so i carried it for few hours till the plane left. I also carried it into the airliner and put it in the overhead bins. HMMMMM things have sure changed.
  4. Lots of Bellanca men still around. I would search in the Bellanca world and unless there is something tough damaged inside this would be a rather easy repair. If you love her and know her I would look into repairs.
  5. what changes does the screaming eagle entail other than prop governor and propeller? then is an R????
  6. completely off the subject but you will remember the sky king series. The man who owned that was Bill Campbell. He was a local gentleman who never gave up on airplanes. When he died some time back his wife was left with disposing of his goodies. Huey, lots of 150 parts, engines etc. Everyone who knew him took advantage of her. She still has all his taped programs and paperwork on ownership. Completely no value information .....jerry P

  15. Airplane wings do not have anything to do with its flying. We picked up an exec in east tn that had dipped a wingtip and buggered the last 1/3 of the wing. Cut off the damaged part and left enough rear spar and support for the aileron. It flew hands off. many times the wing hit a fence post or other and mid section was damaged. duct tape and broom handle and again flew hands off. Shop in ND was sealing the tank in mid winter. they put a light bulb down in it in order to hurry the PRC. Someone caught their foot on the cord and blew the bulb. Actually blew the tank skin off into the floor. It wouldn't fit inside the plane so pop riveted it back in place with a dozen rivets. Flew straight. SO I am convinced it must be she shape of the cabin top that makes it fly. What do you think ?
