  1. I have some used avionics for sale after a recent panel upgrade. Some of the stuff may not be of much use but I thought I'd throw it out there in case someone has a bad unit and doesn't want to spend a lot of money to replace it. I have: Century slaved NSD360 HSI p/n 52D137-1333: $1,000 KT-74 Transponder: $150 KY197 Comm (for some reason you can't read the frequency at night; fine during the day. Never had it looked at; priced accordingly): $150 Stormscope WX-900 with cable and antenna: $300 KNS80 Rnav (minor display issue. when tuning, one of the lighted numbers doesn't display in full. I'm told it's repairable but I never bothered with it; priced accordingly) $100 Other than the comm display at night and the rnav display, everything worked when removed 2-3 weeks ago. Not greedy, just want to move this stuff if anyone is interested. Checked on ebay and priced everything less. Shipping included within the continental United States. PM me if interested. Thanks, Kevin
  2. Used it today from row 32 in a B757. You need to have it close to the window but it works as good as in my Mooney. Watched us come into rwy 35C at DFW using split screen. Graphics are fantastic and love the synthetic runway. Just not use to seeing 37000 ft and 406 knots on the tapes at cruise!
  3. Congrats on your 201. I love mine. These guys are right; these planes require precision. 70 on final and if I'm light 65. I tell people my mistakes were hidden well in the Archer I flew; in a Mooney there are consequences. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. I went with FCIII and Michelin air stop tubes. Several guys on MS recommend this combo. No regrets. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. my plane has been in the shop the last several weeks. When I get it back I'm plan in a trip far enough to get it up to 10-11K to really see how it performs. Between work and a busy life I haven't had a chance to fly any distance to give a pirep. As far as smoothness and ease of starting I'm very happy. I don't want to suggest it starts like a car but ever since its been installed I've never had a problem getting it lit. I'll report back soon! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Looks like a nice plane. Love the LoPresti cowl - they claim it adds 7-8 mph. True?
  7. I did the same thing. I'm installing a 330ES to replace my KT-76 and didn't opt for the GDL 88 either. Like you, I'll use my iPad mini / Stratus for traffic. I haven't heard great things about traffic displayed on a 530/430 which is what I have. Now if I had a GTN750, I would reconsider.
  8. Perhaps that's my problem; I don't use a BatteryMinder. Seems too inconvenient to have to open the access hole and battery box every time I fly. Fumbling around with cotter pins, etc.
  9. I replaced my Gill with the same battery about a year and a half ago. It's already starting to crank slow. I'm replacing it as soon as it's out of the avionics shop with a Concorde RG-35AXC. MS members overwhelmingly prefer Concorde...now I know why.
  10. Cool video. Need to get myself one of those go pro cameras. I noticed your oil door doesn't appear completely closed.
  11. Probably not a good weekend to head this direction. I'm in Iowa and snow showers are forecast across the state on Saturday and Sunday. Here's what I use for icing forcast; picked it up here on a post a while back. I think Jose shared it. http://aviationweather.gov/adds/icing/icingnav?icg_type=CIPSEVO_00&height=090
  12. I emailed my installer. That's what I want. Looks great. Thanks for sharing!
  13. I went through this with my J. Tried nearly everything. Try this: firewall everything, boost 3-4 seconds or until fuel pressure needle maxes out, throttle cut off and advance 1", mixture cutoff. Now here's the important part, wait about 15 seconds. Get your seatbelt on, etc. This gives the fuel time to vaporize. Now, light it and bring the mixture in when it fires. Sometimes if it doesn't fire right away I bring the mixture in early just a hair. For what it's worth, I eventually broke down and installed the electroair electronic ignition and that pretty well solved my problem. Try this first. Good luck!
  14. I think the reason the engine prices are so different is an overhaul versus a factory remanufactured (or even more expensive, new). I paid about $32000 for the engine alone but it's a zero time IO360-A3B6 engine. An overhaul is less expensive but the engine time doesn't reset to zero. As you probably suspect, the purchase price of the airplane was much lower had the engine not needed to be replaced. As far as a turbo is concerned, I flew a K and really liked it - especially how well it climbed. In the end I live in Iowa and didn't want the added maintenance expense and also liked the J airframe I bought better (paint, equipment, TKS, etc). The K really pays off at higher altitudes (12K and up). At lower altitudes the speed will be the same but the fuel burn in the K will be about 2 gallons per hour higher. I know some don't like turbos but if the right one would've came along I would've had no problem buying it!
  15. I transitioned into a J at 400 hours and an IR. It was a perfect step up from an Archer. I'm no expert but jumping from a trainer to an Ovation with low hours is a huge jump and insurance will be astronomical., and for good reason; a huge amount of risk. That "risk" should tell you something. I bought my J and spent over $40K on a factory remanned engine, prop overhaul and annual. Depending on your budget stick with a J or similar model and you won't regret it. All of us want something newer and faster but be smart about it and buy a plane that you'll be comfortable and safe in. Just my opinion. Good luck to you.
  16. I'm in the process of an Aspen install also. I told my installer I didn't want one of those metal toggle switches and preferred a white rocker be installed next too all the others. This might be a better idea. Mooney rockers are expensive; had a red one installed for my electronic ignition and was charged about $250. But it looks good.
  17. Not really. Just said the ones he installed keep coming back and the 330ES is problem free. I was out on the 330 until Garmin dropped the price $2000. I'm sure they'll keep coming down but I want to get this out of the way.
  18. I'm in the process of some avionics upgrading; part of which is an ADS-B. Solution. I went with the 330ES because the installer said it would work better with my 530/430 setup over the Avidyne. He also said he's having problems with the KT74 and advised against it. My plan is to use my iPad mini with stratus 2 and foreflight for weather and traffic. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. I have a tanis pre-heater and inside the cabin is a power receptacle that I plug my space heater in to. Of course it's only hot when the tanis is plugged in. I keep it on a very low setting but it's sure nice not to have to climb into a freezing cold cabin. I figure it's good for the avionics as well.
  20. I upgraded my 430 to waas for $3500 last summer and recently bought a 530W for primary GPS. Paid $7750 and it included tray, connectors and a new antenna. I was told Garmin will support the waas units for quite a while but time is running out on non-waas. The price for the upgrade will only continue to rise.
  21. Not required at all. Just looking for the safest and easiest route possible. I'll look into your route; it sounds better. Thanks.
  22. Will do!
  23. Bought one today. I'm interested in the rate at my normal altitude of 7-9K and even more interested at 10-11K although I'm not up there very often at all. I already own the O2 tank and cannulas so I think I'll buy the sky-ox regulator and a couple of new cannulas and use O2 more often. I know the fatigue of long days in the cockpit. Thanks for the advice. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. Thanks for the info. Staying under 10K would be ideal. Although I've never used it I would have no problem with O2 but I fear my wife wouldn't like it. The idea of simply "needing" it would probably scare her off and then we'd be flying Southwest Airlines. I'll plug this route into foreflight tonight. As some of the other guys have posted, getting through the mountains east of Albuquerque will be the biggest challenge.
  25. Thanks for the advice, Don. Sounds like a good idea.
