  1. Note: This is not a bargain, or cheap. I am looking to upgrade to an Avidyne IFD540 but will keep this GNS530W if I don't get the price I need. Sorry. Details: GNS530W - 14/28V - P/N 011-01046-00 (not a non-WAAS upgrade unit) purchased new and installed in 2008. The unit displayed a Glideslope Failure message last week so we pulled it out and sent it to Garmin for an $1,100 factory overhaul. When the unit is returned to me in January it will have been thoroughly serviced with a full 6 month factory warranty and Garmin 8130 form. The sale will also include a NEW mounting tray, NEW installation kit, and NEW WAAS GPS antenna as these will be provided to me by Avidyne when purchasing their unit (these IFD540 and GNS530W components are interchangeable). There is no need for me to remove the old tray etc. from my plane for exchange. This is not an Ebay auction, nor a fire sale. Used avionics sites like Bennett Avionics is charging $10,495 for this unit (used/no factory overhaul) with only a 90 day (Bennett) warranty. Sarasota and Gulf Coast are quoting used units at $9,350/$9,495 (again not Garmin overhauled w/factory warranty). Sarasota just told me on the phone they don't even HAVE any units to sell. So... what I'm looking for is $9,725. If you already have and don't need a WAAS GPS antenna you can knock $275 off that price. That's a lot of money, and there may not be any interest but it's a pathway for installing a like-new Garmin WAAS unit for ~$4,000 less than a new Avidyne. I need to know if you're interested before the end of December 'cause if there are no offers before then I will be reinstalling my fresh Garmin unit when it is returned in early January. Sorry for the price but you get what you pay for. I have just a little more info to add about this offer: The sale also includes the datacards (of course) but note that the navdata card was recently replaced with the newest high-capacity version (orange label). I have a paid Jeppesen navdata subscription for this unit covering the entire US through April 2017 as well as the newest programmer unit that will be included as well. I'll even throw in the Garmin programmer used to update terrain and obstacle databases. The unit also comes with all the original Garmin manuals CDs etc. That's it.
  2. I agree with Mike on this one. For VFR it's "over the top" and perfectly legal for Private Pilots though forbidden for Light Sport Pilots. In some circumstances I believe it's fine; not all agree. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  3. I always thought if you ran into somebody while in VMC it's your ass, and if you run into somebody while in IMC it's somebody else's ass. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  4. I wish this was true but in fact is grossly optimistic. Upgrading from my GNS530W will cost $6K-$8K for a IFD540/GTN750 at discount pricing with no add-ons. My 530 is at Garmin right now being overhauled and I'm weighing my options. If I could make this upgrade for even $4K I'd do it today! So if you know something about this I'm unaware of please share. 5. Have you ever SEEN Abilene, TX?[emoji846] Also believe it or not WIKI has a page on the subject. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abilene_(song) Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  6. So... do you think this means I'll have a better chance of slipping a G3X + integrated autopilot past the FSDO? I should be able to say "works fine in an RV-10" and walk out with the approval, right? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  7. I bet posting that felt great![emoji846] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  8. Torque seal. Handy stuff, particularly on the nuts/studs of a dual-mag. Great for peace-of-mind. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/crosschecktorqueseal.php?clickkey=3836 Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  11. So, what IS the street price on an IFD540? In 2 weeks I'll have a freshly overhauled (by Garmin) GNS530W (14/28V) in my hands with a 6 month factory-warranty. No better time to sell, right? According to all the hype a 540 would slide right in the gaping hole in my panel and in less than an hour I'd be fully operational (though I'm very skeptical). It would have to work with my GTX330ES (already ADS-B compliant) and still display TIS-A traffic and terrain/obstacles. I could upgrade to a GTN750 for ~$7K+ but about all I gain is a marginally larger touchscreen, and airway routing. And a delay in planned obsolescence. Unless I'm missing something it's hard for me to justify $6K-$8K for so little gain. Comments welcome. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  12. I'm shocked by how sick some of these people are! I mean THREE dorsal fins? REALLY?!![emoji846] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  13. I agree with what Mo said in the previous post; I'm extremely pleased with my J. Regarding the door, I don't miss it much as I spent considerable time gaining experience in PA28s. Outside of an off-field landing I see little need for it at all. The solid side simplifies routing of wiring/tubing and adds strength to the airframe. It eliminates drafts and leaky seals while smoothing airflow over the exterior. One week a year, when heading west, I long for a turbo but I've had my J to 17,900 msl so even the Rockies are passable with proper planning. All in all they're a great compromise IMO. P.S. My empty CG is at 45.52.[emoji846] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  14. It's not fuel that breaks down the standard "nitrile" o-rings but is exposure to oxygen and more-so ozone. Fluorocarbon (aka Viton) o-rings are equal to both Nitrile and Fluorosilicone in fuel resistance and are very resistant to O2 and ozone as well. They will have performance similar to Fluorosilicone at a much better price. Also Fluorosilicone is recommended for static applications only, but while the 010 stem o-ring is a dynamic application the movement is small and infrequent so you'd likely be okay there. I'm not sure these newer compounds were widely available when the specs were written but I can state that either Viton or Fluorosilicone are better materials for the application. 15. Not even close to quitting time. I ran into Gideon Jones at T41 a few days ago taxiing out in front of me in a Legend Cub, and then at a Christmas party later that night. He's still TEACHING people to fly at 92 years of age. https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2016/december/pilot/pilots-gideon-jones In light of your recent performance getting safely on the ground I'd say you're just reaching your prime! 16. Yep, with me in the left seat and anybody 100#+ in the right seat there is NO scenario short of being over gross that would put me out of CG. Gotta love that! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  22. The weather here sucks today. Was trying to meet up with others for some formation practice. Instead I settled for starting an oil change which meant making a short flight to warm up the oil/engine prior to draining. Ceiling 1,700 agl. Winds 30 degrees cross at 22/gusting 30, perfect conditions for honing one's skills. Gotta love touching down at 35 mph groundspeed! I just couldn't stand the thought of my baby sitting there for 12 days over the holiday with dirty (38 hour) oil in the engine. Gotta keep the rust monster at bay. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  24. What vintage would that be? 2025? I agree wholeheartedly. My '78 was listed well north of $100K with original paint and an only moderately-updated interior. I was more interested in the recent Mattituck rebuild, Weep-No-More tank reseal and solid IFR WAAS (albeit not glass) panel. I asked for and got a sizable discount for the older paint even though the leading edges had been re-done so we ended up right at VREF (always negotiate). When the time is right I'll dress up the P&I to my liking; I'm giving strong consideration to gold plating. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  25. My "J" was originally purchased in only their 2nd year of production (1978). Still it's 14 years newer than the "E" I partnered in. Over its 38 year life it flew an average of 79 hours per year. Now at ~3,000 TTAF I feel confident that the structure remains sound. I'm not saying there aren't some incredible "vintage" planes but to me the J just feels more modern. Simple emotion likely has something to do with that. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
