  1. +1 for Williams Airmotive. Awesome talent. I worked with the owner Paul about 10-12 years ago. That day, we/he match drill a center wing skin off a m20c. He recreated a new skin by hand with a drill, Dimpler, sheer, and 2x4. Absolutely amazing!!!All the holes lined up perfectly. I was worried about the radius of the Leading edge. That's what the 2x4 was for. Paul said Pipers and Cessnas use only 2 presses to get the radius. Mooney's need 3 presses! He took three simple hand presses with the 2x4 laid over the soon to be leading edge to get the radius. I rolled up both new and old skins and flew home. They do a ton of Cessna work our of sheer volume. However, I would trust them to make anything from scratch better than the factory. -Matt
  2. Well at Overhaul anyways...
  3. I lubed the snot out of mine at install last year for that reason. Plus if you don't lube them, you will snag the oring that seals them anyway. Not an AD yet... It would be silly if it ever became an AD. Matt
  4. What missing step faring are they talking about on an F? Is it not just a square tube that retracts? Just need to play the game now that your this far. I know when I visit with my PMI it's usually his game and rules too. Smile and nod... -Matt
  5. Haha, thanks Bob B, couldn't remember the Law. My 318 Digital Electronics class in college was fun, it kicked my ass! I'd love to go back and try to pay more attention! -Matt
  6. I think its a good move. Install it , wing it till it no longer works, and then buy a used GTN or better in 2020! Years ago I heard that the capability of electronics and computers technology doubles every 18mo. Probably greater than that now! Who knows what will be the new thing in 2020! I bet my Kx155 and 530w will be just fine!! -Matt
  7. Grass Strip??? My folks are looking to get out of Chicago! 4in of snow this Am! I grew up there and don't ever remember that much snow this late. There is probably a 12" base! My Dad should have his Sonex done soon! -Matt
  8. I spent some time yesterday looking pictures of Ual flight 93's crater in the ground. Not speculating anything, but if the jet went down in the Jungle, they will never find it with out some serious Radar/tracking equipment. Flight 93 was tracked for hours on radar, if 93 went down in a tree line, it would have been hard to see. I can't imagine trying to find a buried 777 in the worlds thickest jungle. There was almost no debris left on the surface of 93's crater. Really sad, whatever the cause was. -Matt
  9. There was a long body Mooney here at SMO that was in a hangar fire when that CJ departed the runway last fall and took out a row of hangars. It was a hot fire, it was in the hangar next to the burnt up CJ. I'd stay away. The Fire bowed every piece of sheet metal in the hangar the mooney was in. It's Still that way, it's the hangar on the far north west end that faces the runway. -Matt
  10. I run 37BY Tempest plugs in our IO-360-A1A in the Mooney. I have had good luck with them in other installs. Proven results on several cases made me a believer. A lot of the engine shops run them on their race engines. Do a search here, it's been discussed in detail. -Matt
  11. My Buddy left South Lake Tahoe in his Bravo one morning headed down to LA. Nothing forecasted, VSI pegged, at idle, Boards out. He took a 4500 ft uncontrolled elevator ride from 16k up to 20k. Luckily he never found the sink! Not to be messed with. From what I can see it's really unpredictable in some parts of the Sierras -Matt
  12. Single engine Beech products? I thought only their Twins had them? I would think its due to the limitations of the pneumatic system. The pressure pumps take a lot of real estate to plumb. The power requirements to run the system might be more than a single engine could produce off a belted or pad mounted accessory. The twins have 2x extra spots to mount engine driven accessories. The Heated wing like on the Columbia 400/Cessna 400 would be slick. It requires a 100a alternator, but the system works great! Lancair did a crap load of testing on their Evolution turboprop. The heated element was less drag and weight than the boots. That's my guess... -Matt
  13. Not if it's government issued data. Not sure where/when the service providers stamp their code on it. Just pulled the trigger on the Garmin updates for the GTNs vs Jepp at work. Just couldn't justify the nearly $2k each for the unlock cards. Jose- we all see your point, but I'd just rather not recieve a violation in an IFR environment because I didn't cross check my expired data. It's expensive to have the services, but even more expensive in court. It only takes one glitch for ATC to say please call this number when you land. -Matt
  14. Well sort of.... Only 2 GTN units can be loaded in each pilot pack... Not 4. They still have you by the balls! -Matt
  15. So if you happen to have multiple GTN's they all need to be added to the Flygarmin account BEFORE you hit purchase pilot pack! This is the best thing Garmin has done to help its customers. My Jepp rep was bummed when I pulled all my other nav data from their service manager. He totally understood regarding the unlock cost. Silly learning curve however... -Matt
  16. Thanks, I've searched a few forms on here and didn't see any comments about the $1985 unlock card... That's reason enough to move away from the Jepp charts, but maybe not if the flight charts are bad? The locals here all agree that Jepp is more expensive to maintain, but I wonder if anyone knew about the fee to unlock the 750! -Matt
  17. Hi All, for those of you with the Garmin GTN 750's what source are you using on your 750 charts. I'm responsible for the data loads at work and maintain the fleet with Jeppessen's Service manager. It's nice because you can load everything from one location and don't need to jump around on line grabbing data from other spots... Untill now. Our 2 New GTN 750s came with Garmin flight charts. Being the Jeppessen user I bought the charts from Jeppessen (1200?). They will not load because Garmin has the units locked. $1985 to unlock each!!! Garmin will sell you a "pilot pack" with the charts for $1085 that will work. Any ways around this? Will the Garmin Charts be ok? Might switch everything back to Garmin! Thanks! -Matt
  18. Can you edit the vibration out? The camera looks like it strobes a bit. But that's ok, so do some Hollywood cameras. I like the music. Who was the artest? -Matt
  19. I'm amazed at the need. So cool to see everyone's interest! I took a look at the nose baggage seals on a citation and they looked to be exactly what we are all wanting. Both for me too! Let us know what the plan is. Way to go Byron! -Matt
  20. I vote we should petition Cody to rewrite the AD! Most logical explanation since the stupid AD came out! Thanks Man! -Matt
  21. Yes, Until it leaks... Lol. -Matt
  22. Ok now I'm curious... Let us know what you decide. -Matt
  23. I remade my breather hose with a whistle notch and had it extend past the cowl flap with a angle cut in the tube that faces aft. That's just to be safe and comply with the way the factory had it. Real world...Exit air out of the cowl by the end of the breather is probably well above freezing. The engine I would think would pump more air than a little pressure on the end of the hose could ever be. I'd ask the engine shop if they had the old piece.
  24. Go for it! The red scotch bright wheels work well for removing corrosion. Autozone, Wally, or napa, have the little 3m buzz wheel kits that work in any drill. Business Aircraft Consumables offer replacements for other larger jobs.
  25. Those looked like 100ft trees. Not the standard 50 footers. I don't think he looked at the panel at all after he saw the ASI was live. All feel I bet. If anything else was a miss we would have read about it. He probably lost some ground effect at the ditch at the end of the R/W. There is no performance percentage deduction for 50 year old airplanes in the charts. Including my airplane. Good lessons to all. -Matt
