Was never a fan of the square box for an air inlet. It just does not look very good. If you can get rid of it then why not? It will look better and I have to think there is probably some aerodynamic benefit there. I guess you would need to relocate the oil cooler if you move the air inlet there. Also wonder if there will any losses associated with a curved path to the carb air inlet. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Avionics Master Switch / Mag Issue
Hector replied to isaacpr7's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Interesting and timely discussion. First engine run today out of annual. Had a very difficult time starting engine (67 C and it usually starts easily in a couple of turns hot or cold). Finally got engine running and shortly thereafter discovered left mag was completely dead. Back to my hanger, cowl off, checked p-lead and it was a bit loose. Removed, clean, and installed again. Engine started without much difficulty this time and the left mag was alive again. Run up was absolutely normal and subsequent test flight went very well. Honestly, I don't know what got fixed other than the p-lead being slightly loose which somehow grounded the left mag? Anyway, to the poster, your symptoms were same as mine. Nearly ran the battery down trying to start, but the P-lead appeared to be the culprit in my case Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD -
Doing mine tomorrow. Aircraft in annual now and 460 hours since it was last done. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

How many passengers do you carry on average
Hector replied to Seth's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Empty your tank completely (go fly and run one tank down as much as you can and drain the rest). Get a few paint sticks from Home Depot and start adding fuel two gallons at a time while marking the fuel level on the paint stick. Make several copies of this paint stick. I keep one in the airplane, one in the hangar, and a spare. Use the paint stick religiously to figure out how much gas you have on board before you take off. I would then invest in some sort of fuel flow meter. I have a JPI engine monitor with fuel flow, but for about $500 you can get a simple JPI 450 that will keep much better track of your fuel remaining than your fuel gauges. It will slave with your GPS to let you know fuel remaining at you next waypoint or destination based on current ground speed. My JPI is accurate to within 1 gallon after 4 hours of flight. You will still want to monitor your fuel gauge less you develop a leak in flight, but only to cross check the JPI. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD -
Porter cable 7424XP With 6 inch pads will work wonders with the right Meguiars products. You will NOT get the same results if you do this by hand. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Trash talking CFI slammed Mooney today why?
Hector replied to manoflamancha's topic in General Mooney Talk
Doing the second owner assist annual on my 67C also. This year, other than checking the mag timing, I did everything else by myself per the Mooney checklist. It was no big deal and I enjoyed it tremendously as I learn this aircraft inside out. Had to adjust the right main preload a bit, rebuilt a brake master cylinder, fix some cracks in the doghouse, but most everything else was routine. Did not find anything that difficult to do. I admit, removing/cleaning/installing the oil screen on the back of the engine could be easier with a little more room, but again no big deal. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD -
In the middle of the night at the peak of the storm I was hearing and feeling some pretty significant impacts on the house. I was sure glad to be in that old house and not a wood framed house. Next morning I walked to the corner gas station and it's roof was gone and the gas pumps had buckled and were now leaning at a 45 degree angle. I got some great pictures of that.

My parents live in an older neighborhood in Miami where most of homes were constructed in the early 60's. They are all concrete block construction with low pitch roofs. Just 5 block south starts a newer section of the city build in the 70's, all wood frame construction. When Andrew went by it literally LEVELED the new neighborhoods. My parents house is about 1 mile from the hurricane center and they lost their anemometer at 152 MPH. My parents lost all the trees in the yard (two of them were just gone!), but negligible damage to the house (a few shingles missing). Yeap, I'll take concrete anytime. Unfortunately, my home in north Florida is wood frame construction, which means I'll be getting the hell out of town in my Mooney if a hurricane comes this way Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Don, I have the dual and the Stratus. Quite frankly once I purchased the Stratus I have never used the dual again. I carry it in my flight bag as a backup only. The GPS in the stratus is excellent and works really well (ground and air). I don't have much of a glare shield in my C so I use the suction cup on the back window. It pick ups weather very nicely on the window. I've only had it fall off the back window once and I did not notice for over an hour. It was still working from the floor behind the front passenger seat. I leave the suction cup on the window and remove only the Stratus. I give it a tug before each flight just to make sure it's still holding well. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Catastrophic engine failure today in flight

Good Job! Nicely done! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD -
I wash with a hose only after my yearly trip to the keys for lobster mini season (I then lube everything again). After that, spray bottle and microfiber cloth every month. Twice a year (after annual and six months later) I use Meguiars product for a deep polishing and waxing. For a quick wax in between I use Lucas Quick Mist (spray on and wipe off). Yes, it is an approve source for charts. That being said, keep in mind all the different ways an electronic flight bag can fail. From dead batteries, to hardware problems, overheating, etc. if you are going to eliminate all paper (as I have), you may want to carry Foreflight in a second device in case something happens. I have Foreflight on both the iPad and my iPhone and although a rare event, I have had to switch to the iPhone once in the last couple of years. Your Foreflight subscription is good for two devices. Custome & Border Patrol Finally stopped me--with armed police

Boy I sure hope that never happens to me. It would take considerable effort in my part to keep my anger in check. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD -
Response from ForeFlight. Impressed that they responded so quickly and the email was sent at 8:40 pm. Those guys are working late. Hi Hector, Sorry to hear about your difficulties, but we appreciate the feedback! I'll forward this on to our development team for review. We have had a few similar PIREPS, but no specific fix for it yet. We'll let you know what we come up with. Keep the feedback coming -- we need to know! I think 6.0 just came out yesterday. I downloaded it and installed it last night. I think I'll do a complete reset of the iPad and see if it solves the problem. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Anyone experiencing problems with the latest version of ForeFlight? Today was my first trip after upgrading to version 6.0 and had about 8 in-flight shutdowns of the App on an iPad Mini and about 3 on an iPhone 5 I was using for backup. Prior to today I had NEVER experienced an in-flight shutdown of ForeFlight. No fun when the App decides to go bye-bye during an ILS approach to KOPF and have to rely on the iPhone for the approach plate while restarting ForeFlight on the iPad. Yes, mi culpa for not carrying a paper copy of the plates, but a least the iPad and iPhone where not shutting down at the same time. I think this has to be a software bug otherwise it would not be happening on both the iPad and iPhone. I sent a note to the technical team at ForeFlight, but thought I would post something here to see if any others have noticed the issue or just to make you aware if you just upgraded to version 6.0. Also I should mention that I was using a Stratus 2 which also received a firmware update with ForeFlight 6.0. It could be the Stratus firmware may be the problem. I must say it shook my confidence on relying on these electronic flight bags too much, but I have been using ForeFlight for so long and have never experienced anything like this. Thanks Mike. Looks like Fontainebleau may be my best bet. Gas is $7.18 which is not too horrible. I have a good friend that owns a business right next to the airport. If I fly there he'll give me a company car for the weekend so it saves on rental car and I get to spend some time with him. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Anyone has a PIREP on FBOs at KOPF (Opa-Locka Executive near Miami). Have not been there in close to 20 years. Usually fly into KTMB when I go down there but for this trip KOPF is more convenient. I see at least one FBO has fuel at close to $11 per gallon !! I'll be there for close to 3 days. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Hanger yes. Here in Florida I consider it a must. Lots of Sun which means UV degrading your paint and transparencies, and heat slowly frying your avionics. We also get some pretty severe thunderstorms and there is hail damage and wind damage and humidity and corrosion to consider. There is also maintenance that I do on my own that would not be possible without a hangar. For example, I do owner assisted annuals. Essentially, I do nearly all the work in my hangar and my A&P/IA checks behind me. OccasionalIy, hangar fairies visit and take care of something minor that they just won't do outside. I pay $267 for my hanger, but I think I probably get most if not all of that back because all of the above reasons. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Actually that question was asked. There was a little confusion but essentially they said no minimum bid. You can start out the bid at $1 if you like. In order to bid, however, you have to submit your financial information so you can be pre-approved at which point you'll get a password so you can bid online. It will be an Acclaim with all the bells and whistles and the new owner gets to pick a custom paint job. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
