I have a brand new G2.  Unfortunately it's still in the cardboard and not yet in the panel.  Hopefully it will be installed in the next couple of weeks.

Just did a G2 install on a clients aircraft, and a G1 on our Mooney. The G2 install was upgraded from a GEM 610. The install involved changing the previously installed oat prob from a subD 9pin connector to a subD 25pin connector. The probe wires , power and gnd harness remained the same. Also, as the option on the G2 will allow fuel flow from an existing FF application source via RS232 wires. There is an option for an Insight FF transducer but I didn't need it. The FF harness is separate and involves a tiny signal generator box and another 9pin harness. Not at all hard to wire up, but not just a rs232 connection like I was planning. I elected not to do it at this time. The kicker is you can't disable the FF read out on the instrument, so your looking at "FF 0.0" in the upper left corner on the facer. I'll go back and wire up the FF when time allows. All in all, easy transition from an existing Insight product. The G1 install was a no brainer, only one additional hole to drill for one of the little knobs! The GM at Insight was great to work with!! He did try his best and pushed Hard for the G2 on the Mooney.

Good luck!

Hi Matt,

Can I ask where you located the OAT sensor?  I'm in the middle of a G2 install for my M20C and am a little confused on the best location for the OAT.

Thanks,

Paul

On the Mooney- Air vent left side on the mooney.(not the insight probe-G1 install)

G2 install, GEM OAT- right side air vent...

Seems to work well on both installs. A lot of guys will also pick up a spot on an inboard lower wing inspection panels.

Airvents a to the cockpit require less wiring...

Good luck!

i installed the OAT probe the same way as the stock OAT probe ( on an inspection panel under the wing on the left wing). The wire supplied by Insight may be a bit short ( could use another foot or two). But it makes for an easy install if you know how to run a wire inside the leading edge. ( ie if you know how to fish through holes with safety wire)

the side pannels of a mooney are already very busy with insulation etc ...

another consideration is that if you ever want to remove the OAT, all you have to do is change the drilled panel (not leaving a hole in the panel side)

Since my factory probe is a digital display the G2 OAT was redundant so I just left it hooked up under the panal to give me inside temps near the radios so I can direct air if necessary.
