I don't get it. Why is GA such a sacred cow? I don't see why a website that utilizes the 5 star rating system that is on so many different sites on the net that everyone uses before making a major purchase, or service would be a bad thing? These review sites are simply neutral and the users go thumbs up or down. I think it's an excellent idea. Why wouldn't you want a review before you go and spend $5-30K on something?

Having dealt with Coy, once and never again, and having given him multiple opportunities to make things right, I have no problem telling other pilots to stay away from him at every opportunity.  Coy has threatened me with a slander lawsuit and I told him to bring it on because the counter suit was pretty significant and he went away quickly enough.  The damage to my plane could have been life-threatening and he knew he was responsible.

For those out there that take offense at outing a dishonest GA service that creates life-threatening problems, I think your priorities are wrong.  These charlatans need to be prevented from damaging others.  Period.

On the flip side, when asked about other services I have offered positive and neutral reviews where I felt warranted.  More positive than neutral I'm happy to have experienced. I believe that these reviews are one of the main benefits of this forum and I am glad to be able to find the reviews when I need them.

This also extends to FBO's. W...It is rare I am made fun of behind the desk in public. In fact, the first time in 15 years and 5000 hours of small airplane flying.)

...

I also wouldn't buy a quart of fuel if I had to fly to the Bahamas and only had two gallons left, it was ~8$.  Today it is $8.59 while nearby FPR is only $6.19.  We were sure to leave reviews about that on Airnav. (Also the fair price in Key West, and the awesome <5$ fuel in DeFuniak Springs).   Perhaps enough reviews like this, we can get noticed.

Interesting comments....the mechanic at the average car dealership earn a lot more than the average GA plane mechanic., and puts up with a lot less BS. No, I'm not an A&P, but I feel for them, their prices aren't going up very much, and the number of professional ones is going down.

1. Half the people on this list don't post their tail number or model, there name, where they are based, their flying experience, their gender, or a blessed thing about themselves in their profile, yet I'm supposed to trust their opinions of good/bad shops. When this site was starting up, I suggested to Craig that our names, location, equipment, and some background be required, like the CPA or Bo lists. Unfortunately IMO that didn't happen.

2. Some folks post recommendations for service providers they've never used. Others post glowing recommendations for shops to curry favor. One guy who used to be on the Mooney list serve all but put a new MSC on the map. Discounted annual might have been an incentive.

3. How about the plane owners who call shops for free advise, and call multiple suppliers for the cheapest price, even on little stuff. You know who you are.

4. Most of us do more analysis on shops than we do on doctors or dentists. Ever try calling one of them for free advise, compare what they charge, or even get a reasonable resume on them?

5. Checking Angie's List will verify that many/most customers give "halo" reviews. Fear of reprisals, legal harassment or denial of follow up service are all motivations. An aviation Angie's list will be worse...but good luck!

What I'm saying is there are good, bad, and honest shops, just as there are good, bad, and dishonest customers. In my experience it's the cheapest PIA customers who are the most vocal if they don't get premier service for next to nothing.

Sadly my novice friends, not everything you read on this list, or anywhere else is always true or accurate. Multiple recommendations from people you know and trust is about as good as it gets...and that takes time and experience. The more you personally know about your plane, the better off you are.

In aviation, as in life, you gotta kiss a lot of frogs to find princess charming.
