Will.iam Posted January 27 Author Report Posted January 27 Revisiting this page as my radio noise is getting more pronounced. Still not as bad as a the first unit but noticeably there. When i had the surefly sent in i replaced my old mag back into the right side so that i could still fly the airplane while i waited for surefly to analyze the unit and i was amazed at how quiet the radios were!!! This eliminated a bad sparkplug or sparkplug wires or harness as well as the distributor cap as all of that was/is the same when the new surefly unit was replaced back into the right side. Of course when i turn off the surefly during a mag check the radios improve again so i have isolated this down to the surefly box or the installation of it as that is the only changes made. This noise is not alays there, it is only when receiving a radio broadcast, i. E. When squelch breaks i hear it in the background. Especially more so when the broadcast is weak like from a far distance awos or atis station. Since i used the same p-lead for the surefly as the old magneto, either the p-lead is good or the magneto isn’t giving off as much efi via the p-lead as the surefly. The only other difference is the power wire to the surefly as the magneto obviously did not need or have that wire connected so I’m thinking i might need to shield that battery wire or reroute it as maybe it’s running too close to the radio panel especially since i have a power circuit breaker in the panel to be able to remove power from the battery for long term sitting to avoid battery draining but this might be the difference in my setup that is causing me more noise than in other people’s setup. i also saw this p-lead capacitor setup that maybe it would help from aircraft spruce? https://www.aircraftspruce.com/pages/ep/magnetos_filters/lsMagFilter.php or get a grounding sheath and cover the hot battery wire back to the panel with soomething like this: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/copperbraid.php?clickkey=813163
takair Posted January 27 Report Posted January 27 Is your Surefly powered directly from the battery or from a bus bar. As I recall, the STC wants it directly from the battery primarily for reliability reasons, but the battery would also act as a capacitive filter. If you are on a bus bar, it could introduce noise into the radios/audio. 1
Ragsf15e Posted January 27 Report Posted January 27 The one I had in my F didn’t cause any noise, but it was an insulated wire (standard) with a protective sheath around it (not a metal shield however) and directly to the battery. The power wire has to go along the pilot side bundle to the battery, so lots of chances for interference there and your switch adds more chances. Not sure where your antenna wires are but it could be laying on them. Is it interfering on both radios? Fwiw, I onetime had noise after an annual and finally found a loose connection to a spark plug that solved it. The mag was working fine though! You’ve narrowed it down but it might not be the SF itself.
Schllc Posted January 27 Report Posted January 27 @MikeOH I installed a surefly in my tsio550. Hot starts were a one shot or wait before the surefly, even then it was not a 100% success rate. Warm starts were always very difficult. Prior to the surefly, LOP for me was fair, but I have had engines that operated smoother . Once the surefly was installed all the roughness I felt with mags went away. I also did not see any elevated temperatures like others have reported. I changed one mag to a surefly because I had a mag failure and I was pulling the interior anyway, the labor was going to be a good bit less, so figured now was the time. I also liked the fact that the ignition would be from two different modalities. In the acclaim I have two batteries, and two alternators so it would have to be a pretty catastrophic event to lose all of those power sources at once. If they can get an STC for variable timing, I would seriously consider putting two surefly, but with fixed timing I don’t see a benefit and I like having a standard mag and emag. One other thing I have noticed is that I see no rpm drop with the emag when the standard mag is off. My other rational was that while an electronic magneto may be new to airplanes, electronic ignition is NOT new by any definition. I’m willing to bet that 2400 hours was a very conservative estimate. 2 1
Mufflerbearing Posted January 28 Report Posted January 28 I installed my surefly years ago. Hot starts are much easier, I can go very LOP if I want, and It's smooth. It also has not created any noise in my radios. When it's time for my magneto to be rebuilt, I'll do a second surefly. 1
