My overhauled engine came with round gaskets "no ears" and my bendix mags were torqued down.  I timed the engine and torqued down the mags to 204 inlbs not noticing or thinking about it.  They should have 62224 gaskets as pictured below (the slick gasket is essentially just a ring with no ears.  I read stories about the round gaskets cracking the ears off bedix mags, am I hosed?  Should I just inspect the ears change gaskets and move on, what else can I do?  I know @M20Doc has come across this.

You should remove the mags, inspect(if it just happened I doubt there’s any harm) and reinstall with the correct gasket and new lock washers.

You can always make one.

No photo description available.

It looks like it was working fine, no oil staining below the mag!

Two questions:

1.  I can find a "Bendix Gasket for Continental", but that suggests that all Bendix mags on all Continental engines use the same gasket.  Where do I look up the correct gasket?

2.  Are the mags reinstalled with dry gaskets?

According to the IPC:

62224          gasket with ears

LW-12681   gasket without ears.

If your mag has ears, use a gasket with ears, if your mag has hold down clamps, use the gasket without ears.

Make sure there is no crud behind the ears or that can stress them.  Makes sure you wash behind the ears.  Here is gasket with ears in this case a Superior SL62224

The engine IPC should be the place to go.  Some of the pictures can be a bit confusing, but see Rich's comments above for clarity.

Based upon Eric’s pic above, it looks like the gasket is installed dry?

I rub them with some Dow DC 4.  Then if if you need to shift the timing the gasket won’t tear.
