eft Posted September 7, 2022 Report Posted September 7, 2022 Is there any circumstance where it would appropriate for a mechanic to use unmetered shop air to test the operation of the gear bypass switch? Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted September 7, 2022 Report Posted September 7, 2022 No. It could damage the switch, and your airspeed indicator. 3 Quote
eft Posted September 7, 2022 Author Report Posted September 7, 2022 It did damage both, I just wondering why a mechanic would think it would be ok? Unnamed mechanic in Nevada. 1 Quote

Sadly the manual doesn’t specify a procedure, but it’s quite simple. Slip a 3-4’ length of surgical tubing over the pitot tube, tape the small drain hole about 3/4” back from the tip on the under side of the pitot tube closed with electrical tape. Pinch the end of the tube closed with a clothes peg, roll the tube around the clothes peg while an assistant observes the ASI. About 10 kts per turn. No shop air required! Quote
PT20J Posted September 7, 2022 Report Posted September 7, 2022 It’s in the M20J Service Manual in the section for pitot system leak checking. 3 Quote
carusoam Posted September 8, 2022 Report Posted September 8, 2022 Hang out in any mechanical shop… or on MS…. You will find out how dangerous/expensive compressed air can be… This is probably the second event recently where compressed air was suspected as the cause of broken pitot related instruments… I got lectured about compressed air early on…. 1) It has oil in it… so don’t get it on your food products…. 2) It is pretty powerful… so don’t blow dust off your skin with it… it can damage those tiny blood vessels and probably fill them with air… 3) It is guaranteed to mess up your really sensitive altimeter and airspeed switch… We need a symbol for No Compressed Air! Put it right on the side of the pitot’s base… with a Hot symbol there as well…. Best regards, -a- Quote
