As my mechanic is installing my EDM 730, he found that a plug from the muffler was blown into the LH Cylinder 4 riser, blocking it by 60-75%. Something I'm sure I would have noticed if I had an engine monitor with EGT for each cylinder. I have a feeling that fixing this might show a noticeable improvement in climb performance. 1 1 Quote
glbtrottr Posted January 31, 2023 Report Posted January 31, 2023 I have owned a K model (a 262, which is a 231 originally which was modded to all the latest 252 things minus a 28v system and cannot upgrade to an encore) for the last 25 or so years. I also own an E model, and I still have the 172 I transitioned from when I was a puppy. Soon I’ll be selling all of them with near zero hours between overhauls.Originally I was looking for a J model - just a much faster 4 banger than my 172 since I was commuting a lot. None were found at the time, and a broker kept bugging me about this K model. To me, the cost of ownership is a substantial and primary concern. I literally just ferried a little Cessna 150 from Texas to California - and the 50 knot headwinds wrecked my work week. That said? The coat of overhaul for a K model has become expensive to the point of being ridiculous, and I have friends who own overhaul shops that will do it for me at cost. Some on this website have quoted 60-90k for a TSIO360MB overhaul. Rrrreallly? A J model sounds perfectly fine for what will likely be 95% of your missions. I’ve huffed and puffed over the Rockies, flying over Colorado and landing at Leadville with no practical climb in the middle of the summer - truth be told that happened once in my life. If I *have* to get somewhere and it’s a must, why not drive and go commercial? I’ve flown and watched my airplane develop icing unexpectedly in terror even though I knew how to deal with it - and did. I’ve had to land in fields covered in snow, I’ve landed in places where the braking action was “poor” in my K model with all the fun that brings, I’ve banged my head on the ceiling from atrocious weather that had grounded other airplanes around…if you “have” to get there, the risk isn’t worth it, but at the same time, there’s nothing heroic about flying your own airplane when you can just as well find other means.A little old short body like an E model is perfect for most missions with 2 people and the flexibility for more in a pinch. Two leggy teenage boys and a wife are likely best suited for a long body, which neither the J nor K model are. If you’re tall as a pilot and I was your teenager in the back of a J or K model, you’d annoy me even if you had a cool airplane. Your mission requirements are pretty important, yet you gotta be realistic and prudent.Send regards to your family from all of us here on MS who very much enjoyed the airplanes they helped build.
