Boilermonkey Posted June 14, 2022 Report Posted June 14, 2022 Diamond is putting the CD-300 on their newest airplane. It makes me wonder if it could be put on a long-body Mooney. Having just put a reman TIO-540 on our M20M $$$$, I wonder what it would take to put this engine on? It’s about 50 pounds heavier, different prop, mounts, would require a rework of the fuel system for Jet-A, FADEC/instrumentation. As a one-off I know there would never be a payback, but over several aircraft what would the lower cost of the engine, maintenance, fuel burn, etc. be? Maybe make the converted aircraft “experimental” and get less expensive avionics too? Quote

Unfortunately, this is not really a viable option for something useful for travel. Otherwise we’d all be flying “experimental” Mooneys. Quote

McMooney Posted June 14, 2022 Report Posted June 14, 2022 NOPE, should def go on a short body first, specifically a 1974 m20e Quote
KSMooniac Posted June 14, 2022 Report Posted June 14, 2022 You might run a new weight and balance with +50 lbs on the nose and see if your plane is still flyable, or able to carry people in front. Sent from my LM-V405 using Tapatalk Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted June 14, 2022 Report Posted June 14, 2022 I'm sure the FAA will allow you to make your Mooney experimental while you are working on the STC. And they will allow it to be certified after the STC is approved. So, what would the engine swap cost? Engine $100K Prop & spinner $10K Engine mount, engineering and DER $20K Cowl, engineering and DER $50K Misc. systems engineering DER $25K Test flying and taking data $20K Creating POH supplement $5K Preparing STC paperwork $5K Total $235K I'm probably leaving out a bunch of stuff, but this is probably in the ballpark. Sent from my LM-V405 using Tapatalk +1 for serious WnB calculation…. BM, Also know the current IO550 is pretty far forwards from the firewall for some reason…. You might have a few extra inches to work with that you might not have expected… How much HP does this engine provide? Best regards, -a- Quote
