Mac80 Posted April 15, 2022 Report Posted April 15, 2022 I just was told it costs $3000 for IO 550 G new cylinder replacement that had low compression. My guess that included everting new on top and would cost $18,000 for 6. Also are prop overhauls for 3 blade about $3000? Any recent quotes?

Given cylinder availability is at a premium along with other parts, this sounds like a cost with replacement labor included, as a top OH kit for the IO550 (kit price only - no labor) is roughly $15k. As part of my ongoing project, my recent quote (over the last two weeks) for a Hartzell F7498 prop OH with TKS overshoes from Jordan Propeller in San Antonio is $4,500. Other shops may vary, and may be cheaper still if you don't have TKS which doesn't require the overshoes to be replaced. 1
carusoam Posted April 15, 2022 Report Posted April 15, 2022 First thing to check… Continental cylinders are challenging to get a good compression reading on… Make sure the mechanic is getting good info from the test… Something about the Continental piston rings, and their alignment, often nets poor compression readings…. PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a- 1
A64Pilot Posted April 15, 2022 Report Posted April 15, 2022 If it makes good power, isn’t fouling plugs and oil consumption is reasonable, I wouldn’t be too concerned about compression check numbers. What’s important in doing compression checks on a Conti is where is the loss of air, if it’s either valve, then that need fixing. Conti’s use low tension rings and rely to a great extent on compression to blow the rings against the cylinder to form a seal, and 80 PSI often isn’t enough pressure to do that. That’s my take on it anyway, I’ve not found that in print. I’ve seen compression checks on an IO-520 be 50 ish, then fly a little and they are 70 ish, fly some more and you see 50 ish again.
carusoam Posted April 15, 2022 Report Posted April 15, 2022 Continental also uses a specific hardware / procedure for checking compression… Something related to using the proper orifice… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a-
A64Pilot Posted April 18, 2022 Report Posted April 18, 2022 it’s a Service bulletin and has been around for a long time, years ago I bought the tester with the built in orifice https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pdf/servicebulletin.pdf 1

I’ve found them to be more reasonable and they do excellent work.
buddy Posted April 18, 2022 Report Posted April 18, 2022 I got my 3 blade Hartzell propeller and McCauley governor overhauled at Palm Beach Aircraft, Inc back in Nov. 2020 for $4,290.00 and that was for an M20R with 310 HP.
