Wheelsnwhings Posted February 20, 2022 Report Posted February 20, 2022 I’m looking to overhaul an IO360-A1A. I’ve seen cylinder overhauls for $2,000 each, but have been quoted $20,000 for the entire engine. Where does the discrepancy lie? Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted February 20, 2022 Report Posted February 20, 2022 I don’t get your question. There is a lot more involved in an engine overhaul than 4 cylinders. Quote
0TreeLemur Posted February 20, 2022 Report Posted February 20, 2022 For a good read on what goes into an overhaul, read Don Maxwell's article "Field Overhauls" where he explained what his shop does here: https://web.archive.org/web/20180718211708/http://donmaxwell.com/publications/ In fact many articles there provide useful info to the Mooney owner. 1 1 Quote

God forbid you need a new cam, crank or case… the cylinders aren’t a large percentage of what you pay for in an oh. $20k seems possible for an oh but likely low. 2 1 Quote
MBDiagMan Posted February 22, 2022 Report Posted February 22, 2022 (edited) I think of cylinders more like engine accessories than I think of them as the engine. I went through an engine overhaul in early 2021. My cylinders were wide deck. And could not be found new. Luckily, the cylinders were relatively low time and went through the cylinder overhaul process well. Determine if you have narrow deck or wide deck cylinders and go from there. What is leading you to believe that you need an overhaul? Low oil pressure? Making metal?…. Edited February 22, 2022 by MBDiagMan 1 Quote

Welcome aboard Wnw… You didn’t supply enough detail here to get a good answer… You have some really good info, just not enough… So the discrepancy probably lies in what you are asking for, and how you asked for it… It probably helps to get up to speed with what the OH options are…. And what options you want to pursue… Some people start with their budget… Some people like to use other’s experience…. Some people like factory remanufactured over field OH’d… And others have the skills and ability to OH an engine themselves…. You probably want more of a conversation here…. To narrow down the possibilities… an engine OH may include the cylinder OH… A top OH is a method of fixing cylinders that have worn… What is it you are trying to accomplish? Be ready to answer a lot of questions to get the answer you want to have… Go MS! -a- Quote

Shop carefully and find out everything that is included in the $20K overhaul. Clarence Quote
Jsno Posted March 4, 2022 Report Posted March 4, 2022 Between having all of the parts sent to a machine shop for inspection and rework probably close to 15K. That does not include the labor of the A&P disassembly and reassembly of the engine. Unfortunately, the angle valve cylinders are way more expensive than the parallel valve cylinders. Just make sure that they install new exhaust valves. The Lycoming exhaust valves should never be reused. They work harden then crack. That could cause catastrophic engine failure. Be prepared for a long lead time. My case has been at DIVCO since mid December and I have been told two to three more weeks. Quote
