Hello All,

I'm trying to walk through an armchair process to download flight data from an EDM-700 engine monitor.  Some airplanes have a data port near the instrument, but I don’t see one here:

I saw a wire dangling under the instrument panel near the pilot’s left knee with a connector at the end:

The connector looks a little like a power plug for a laptop, but it's got a wart at the end that would prevent it from being plugged into a cylindrical jack.  Any idea what this is?  Is this wire used to download the data somehow?  If so, how?

Finally, I saw something labeled "EDM" high on the left side of the instrument panel, but it looks like just a button and an indicator light.  Any idea what this is for?  Does this button interact with the EDM-700 somehow?

Thanks in advance for any help.

And while I'm at it, how do you include inline pics?

The cable you show is the one.  But the port does not need to be anywhere near the EDM700 itself.  It may be down on the side by the passengers left leg or off anywhere on the panel.  But as far as I know, the port is always mounted.  I don't know that anyone would have left it just dangling.   And it may also have a cap over/in it so it may take a little looking.  Especially if it's down below somewhere.

No idea what the your button and light are that are in the last pic.  And it does indeed look like a button, but take another look at it to make sure it's not some sort  of cap that got pushed into the connector.  The light may not have anything to what looks like a button.

No idea about the button and light marked EDM.  The cable end in the photograph doesn't look similar to the data port for my EDM-700.  I've circled in red the EDM-700 data port that is on my panel.  There is a JPI specific cable that connects into the port on the panel.  I have one of the JPI "Download Box" devices that makes downloading pretty easy.  Here's the link to the download box: https://www.jpinstruments.com/shop/jpi-usb-download-box/

The jack in your panel (circled) looks like others I have seen, and I'm aware of the "magic box" that converts that to a USB port.  It's entirely possible that the wire and connector hanging under the left side of the panel in the picture I attached has nothing to do with the EDM-700, but I didn't see anything else that looked like your jack.  The "EDM" label on the top left of the panel is more suggestive, but hard to tell.  I gave the "button" cap a little tug to see if it was hiding something, but it didn't yield.  Might have to pay someone to open up the panel for a look.

The EDM 700 uses a panel mount power jack for the data port (same type of jack used for many laptop computer AC adapters). It's the jack to the lower left of the display in the picture.

This jack will mate with the plug on the EDM download box which I found to be the easiest way to transfer data to a USB drive. I don't know what that plug is in your picture. It looks like maybe a damaged power plug. Also, the jack in @gdwinc picture looks like a 1/4" phone jack. Different owners may have used a variety of connections and made various patch cords.

The EDM 700 supports an external alarm light. I have no idea what the pushbutton might be.

If I remember correctly, the data port wire is a black and white twisted pair.  Have a look at the back of the EDM and see if you can find it.

Thanks to all.  I spoke with JPI this afternoon, and concluded that pulling the head out of the panel is likely to tell me more than I currently know.  The support person also said that the earliest versions of the EDM-700 did not have internal memory for data capture.  Film at 11.

For 1.2 AMU after your EDM Core credit for the 730, you can upgrade your prehistoric 730 to a modern color display EDM-830. Spruce and some others sell the head display as a upgrade and then return your 730 for core credit. They are plug compatible and all you need is enough space somewhere for the larger display. But at the cost of engines these days and all the benefits of a modern analyzer they are so very worth it. With a 830, you can add new sensors like MAP and RPM for just the cost of the sensors and installation. Its still not a tso'd for primary unit, but at a fraction of cost of a primary approved unit with most of the functionality.

If you want to keep the 700 but it doesn’t have recording capability, you might see if JPI can update it. There is also a lot of used equipment being sold due to panel retrofits. A lot shows up on eBay.

JPI does have FW update options.  I think they're may be a display upgrade option too for the very old units.

And they're pretty good about not pushing you on the updates if not needed.  I kept mine in the panel upgrade and called saying I wanted to get the latest FW update and have the unit checked over.  The woman I talked to said they'd be happy to take a look at the unit if I wanted to send it in, but the updates beyond the version I had were to fix very specific issues in a couple of planes.  So since I wasn't experiencing those issues, there was no reason to pay for the the FW update.
